Grunge is back! As a big fan of Soundgarden, I was thrilled when they released their new single Live to Rise which is featured in the motion picture soundtrack of Avengers. But as what frontman Chris Cornell says, the single isn’t like what the band will churn out for their new album, which got me excited a little more because I missed that good ol’ 90’s heaviness they brought in.
Live to Rise is more of a stripped down Soundgarden version, and if you’re not so much familiar with the band, you would think it’s an Audioslave song because of the riffs and the way it flows, but one thing that you’ll know it’s an SG song is the way the drums have been laid. Matt Cameron, also the drummer in Pearl Jam, is one of the masters when it comes to odd-timing, it’s been his trademark in SG ever since and evident here on the song. While the fast guitar wah solo of Kim Thayil’s style also differs from Tom’s technical dj-ing, turntable style. Ben Shepherd’s bass is great as ever, complimenting well on the odd times and of course Cornell displays yet another powerful voice in this song.
It may not be as heavy as their previous songs but they still rock with this one. The band is like wine, they get better with age.
And doing it with the new film Avengers, you’ve got a kick-ass movie with a kick-ass rock band. It’s super awesome!
Here’s the recently released official music video. Watch and enjoy.
