Veteran TV host Kathie Lee Gifford may have just committed probably one of the most cringeworthy interview gaffes in television history as she interviewed fellow showbiz veteran Martin Short last Wednesday on The Today Show.

Everything was going pretty well until Kathie Lee started to ask about the actor/comedian’s family, which of course, eventually led to questions about his relationship with his wife. Doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with it, right? Well, yes but if the man’s wife has already passed away 2 years ago, you might want to rethink that.

It all basically started with her follow-up question, “And you and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?”

To which Short responded, “We… uhh… have been married… 36 years.”

Martin Short’s wife died of ovarian cancer back in 2010.

Kathie, who was still clueless at that point continued on with a couple more questions.

As TMZ stated, she apparently didn’t get the memo. She was later notified about her mistake by none other than Mr. Short himself right after the interview. She then made an apology on both the show (live, on-air) and on her Twitter account saying, “I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family, he handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”

Martin Short was such a class act indeed for the way he handled the situation, and nice enough not to embarrass Ms. Gifford on-camera. Hats off to you, sir!
