Kelly Macdonald, Scottish actress known for roles in movies like Nanny McPhee, Gosford Park, Intermission, No Country for Old Men, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and TV’s Boardwalk Empire stars in the new Pixar/Disney movie Brave. She does the voice of the main character Princess Merida, the red-headed heroine, who is determined to make her own path in life that ends up having consequences and defies custom that brings chaos to the kingdom. She must rely on her bravery and skills in archery to undo the curse.
In this interview with Rebecca Ford, Macdonald pointed out that she looked up to Calamity Jane for her character since she’s not familiar with Disney princesses of the past. “As far as Disney princess go, I had watched Snow White, but I don’t think I’ve seen any others,” she says.
Calamity Jane and Merida share similar traits. Says Macdonald, “She’s out on a horse, she’s a bit of a tomboy, but she sings songs. Thankfully Merida doesn’t sing.”
Brave also features the voices of Emma Thompson, Craig Ferguson, Billy Connolly, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd and Julie Walters.
