Nina Arianda, who won a Tony Award this year for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for Venus in Fur is tapped to play Janis Joplin in the upcoming biopic.

Arianda has been active on Broadway as well as in movies, however this will be the first time she will take on the film lead. She will also sing in her own voice for the movie with production starting early next year. Produced by Peter Newman with Sean Dukin taking on the directorial duties, the independently produced film takes on the singer’s life for the last six months who died in 1970 of drug overdose.

Joplin gained rock star status as the singer of pysechedelic-acid rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company and was an iconic figure among the Woodstock generation.
