It’s official: Mariah Carey will join American Idol as new judge for its season 12. Fox made the announcement as the pop diva signed recently following Jennifer Lopez’s and Steven Tyler’s exit from the show.
Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said, “We do in fact have one judge whose deal closed very recently. It's an artist that many contestants have tried to emulate.”
Carey has been the top contender to join the panel and TMZ, reports that she will likely take home close to a whopping $18 million in the first year, the highest-paid judge in reality TV.
“I am so excited to be joining Idol. I can't wait to get started.” Carey said.
It will be a real battle of divas among the top three singing competition shows, with Christina Aguilera on The Voice and Britney Spears and Demi Lovato on X Factor.
One more spot awaits to fill the judge's table at Idol and it has been reported that either Miley Cyrus or Adam Lambert may be the next. Randy Jackson is the only original remaining judge but has yet to confirm for a return.
