George Michael lashed out to his critics during his performance at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics after he was accused of using the event to promote himself.

Michael was one of the popular performers who graced the closing show but was criticized for performing his latest single White Light instead of his classic popular hits.

Some blasted him for promoting the new song in front of the international audience but Michael, who also sang a classic hit song Freedom, responded via his Twitter page.

He said, “Had a GREAT time at the closing! I hope you are not bothered by the press reports of my scandalous 'promotion'.
"Please join me in telling them to f**k off! It was my one chance on TV to thank you all for your loyalty and prayers, and I took it. And I don't regret it."

The performance was Michael’s first after suffering from pneumonia last year. The song White Light was about his near-death experience of the illness and a celebration of being alive following it.
