The Dark Knight Rises’ reign at the box office has ended with The Bourne Legacy overtaking the top spot which earned $40.3 million.

Although this latest installment’s earnings were below those of the last two Bourne series, it’s still high enough for Universal to ‘breathe a sigh of relief’ according to Los Angeles Times, which took the biggest risk for going with a new star. So no Matt Damon? No problem!

This is a key test for the film outfit as the reboot is without Damon, who first starred on the Bourne series. Jeremy Renner takes on the lead role on the fresh take of the franchise and it's also Tony Gilroy’s first turn on the directorial job.

The Bourne Legacy also stars Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton.
