The long-developing biopic of singer Nina Simone will finally be singing as Avatar star Zoe Saldana will take the lead role in the movie Nina which was originally slated to Mary J. Blige, according to THR.
The film, which will be written and directed by Cynthia Mort (The Brave One), will start production in Los Angeles on October 16th. It is based on the singer’s autobiography 'I Put A Spell On You' and centers on the relationship with her assistant Clifton Henderson (to be played by David Oyelowo) that she maintained in her life.
Simone, an accomplished classical musician, rose as a singer-songwriter in the 1950’s and in the 1960’s released songs that focused on subjects like the murders of Medgar Evers (Mississippi Goddam) and Martin Luther King Jr. (Why? The King Of Love Is Dead). She also became involved in different advocacies such as the civil rights movement and went to exile in Barbados then France where she died in 2003.
