Ebert was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer back in 2002 and later had surgery of the salivary gland which caused him to lose his chin and ability to speak, although he did eventually managed to resume his work in writing and in television. He suffered a hip fracture in December, which led to the discovery of the cancer.
In his essay titled Leave of Presence, which he published on his blog on Tuesday, Ebert stated that he was going to slow down and reduce the number of reviews he wrote. His last words were “I’ll see you at the movies.”
Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. See you at the movies indeed.
