E911 Talk 149: Closed Captioning coming to APN

2013-06-27 :: Mark J. Fletcher, ENP

When was the last time you checked your multimedia content for ADA and accessibility compliance? Even though we know about it, I myself was guilty of not making my content accessible to those who are deaf or hard of hearing. That will be changing very soon, and we are proud to be adding in CC to the APN Podcasts and videos at http://youtube.com/fletch911tv. Thanks to Richard Ray of the City of LA and Tonni Dunne from Intrado for their review of the content and assistance in organizing the ASL videos from NENA 2913. …

One of my favorite interviews so far. I talk to Kristy Fifelski New Media Director at e.Republic (aka GovGirl) about Social Media and Government. What to do, how to do it and where agencies can go for more information. If you have not seen GovGirl before, she has a great set of YouTube videos at http://GovGirl.com. Proactive governments engage in Social Media, most content originates from within the brick-and-mortar facilities. York Regional Police (@YRP) from Ontario, Canada has taken Social Media to new heights by equipping their sleek 200kph Eurocopter EC120B tactical airborne platform, known to you and I as a "police chopper", with Twitter that can be followed at #YRPNights. Sometimes size matters, and sometimes it doesn't. While at INTEROP 2013, I ran across a new computing platform called a 'modular computer'. This ingenious little powerhouse is the size of a grapefruit with the horsepower of a full size rack mounted 'pizza box'. WCAX Channel 3 in Montpelier, Vermont ran a story this past week highlighting a problem with schools and the states 911 system. In a recent interview, Rep. Joan Lenes (D-Shelburne) stated that the House and Senate Committees just recently learned that many of the states schools telephone systems have recently been centralized according to their town or district. E911 Talk 140: Too Little Data and Too Many Apps?

2013-04-27 :: Mark J. Fletcher, ENP

NG911 networks promise to provide new forms of multi-media to the PSAP call takers. But where does that information come from? The age of the App is undeniably here, but there have been few that have been blessed by Public Safety as they fail to take their side of the problem into consideration. Also, getting the data to the PSAP can be problematic as disparate system deployments could confuse instead of assist, or create a false sense that data is being provided when it is not. Is a new standard of application connectivity required to manage all if the BIG DATA that will now be available? …

Over the past several years a recurring theme on this podcast, and unfortunately in the news, is the practice of "swatting". Swatting is when a caller places a call to a 911 center with the intention of invoking a SWAT team response to their intended victims location. Many times this is done out of revenge, or a poor joke, but in either case it can be a costly and highly dangerous situation for both police response teams, as well as the intended SWAT victim. …

2012-08-11 :: Mark J. Fletcher, ENP

The caller from Chevron, calmly stated the problem, a fire, and the location, crude unit number four. Unfortunately this meant nothing whatsoever to the 911 call taker. 911 call takers are paid to answer 911 calls. Not to decipher what "crude unit number four" means from a location perspective. We constantly are hearing or reading about the financial budget crunch that public safety deals with every single day. With the cost savings in my example alone, dispatching the right resources at the right time not only improves the response metrics, but provides a more efficient environment. If you were to shave at just 1% off of a $20 million operating budget, that ends up putting $200,000 back into someone's budget that can be put to good use. …
