GeekNights 20130627 - Robert's Rules of Order

2013-06-27 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, after Rym's return from the midwest, we consider Robert's Rules of Order. If you need to halt organizational drama or impress grognards, this is your go-to resource. We also hit up on some Hearts, an Edward Hopper exhibit, former slave states reminding us why we should have let them go, and SCOTUS ruling on a variety of things. Rym also announces that the next GeekNights Book Club book will be Stasiland.

GeekNights 20130619 - Little Witch Academia

2013-06-19 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the short Little Witch Academia (リトルウィッチアカデミア), produced by Trigger as part of the Young Animator Training Project. It'd delightful, well-animated, and has a little bit of pony in it. Along the way, Rym GeekBites The Old Man's Lamp (おぢいさんのランプ) and Scott GeekBites the Adventure Time comics.

GeekNights 20130613 - The Player of Games

2013-06-13 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on the GeekNights Book Club, we discuss Iain M Banks' The Player of Games. If ever there was a novel that was in our wheelhouse, it's this one. We also talk briefly about some of our more recent Kickstarter backings, and enjoy the "that guys" we poked on Reddit after one fifth of our Anime Boston performances.

GeekNights 20130611 - Console Gaming in 2013

2013-06-11 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, with all the news about Xbox1 and Playstation 4, we talk about the used games, DRM, and other assorted topics that have come up in relation.

GeekNights 20130605 - Shin Sekai Yori - Final Thoughts

2013-06-05 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, Rym and Emily give a full review, as well as some final thoughts, on Shin Sekai Yori - From the New World. It's a solid show with a complex story, good characters, and a surprising ending.

GeekNights 20130603 - Software Testing

2013-06-03 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we take on a high level overview of software testing. Unit testing, QA, UAT: all this can be yours. First, Zynga has seen substantial layoffs (hopefully as a beginning echo of the 80s videogame market collapse for the "free" to play monetization model, the Red Wedding seems to have startled some people, and Google currently won't allow app developers to use glass hardware effectively.

GeekNights 20130530 - Farts

2013-05-30 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about farts. More importantly, "Why do tiny silent farts, smell worse then big loud farts?" We consider the fattest guy and the smallest wheeled briefcase. We ponder Scott's lost water bottle and new umbrellas. We expound on PAX's abbreviated hours in light of its extra day. We think about changing facial hair. We wonder how we became the biggest citation for Dudebro. All of this, plus farts.

x

GeekNights 20130528 - King of Tokyo

2013-05-28 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, returning triumphant from Anime Boston, we review Richard Garfield's King of Tokyo. It's a great warmup game, but it made us realize that far too few of you have ever played Yahtzee. We also discuss the new Xbox1 and the GTX780. Stay tuned for ConnectiCon and PAX Australia!

GeekNights 20130520 - Tech News Roundup May 2013

2013-05-20 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we run through a tech news roundup, covering Yahoo's acquisition of Tumblr, Yahoo's updates to Flickr, the FDA's upcoming decisions regarding triclosan in antibacterial soap, the first real augmented reality overlay glasses, and Yahoo in general. Rym challenges you to set up MRTG, and we talk at length about Scott's newfound love of reality television thanks to Strip Search and Kitchen Nightmares.

GeekNights 20130514 - Passwords and Cheat Codes

2013-05-14 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we nominally talk about passwords and cheat codes (e.g., why PAKING PAKING PAKING PAKING and 8uuuuu uuuuuu uuuuuu uuuuuu work the way they do). We also talk at length about why World of Warcraft is fading so quickly, the Stanley Cup playoffs, and a new Adventure Time game is coming.

x

GeekNights 20130508 - Adventure Time!

2013-05-08 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, it's Adventure Time! (Scott wouldn't sing the song). In the news, Venture Brothers is starting up a new season soon, physical media continues to die, and Princess Knight is getting a remastered release (but dub only).

x

GeekNights 20130506 - When your Meat Dies

2013-05-06 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider what happens (and should happen) to your bits (i.e., your emails, tweets, hard drive, and collected digital output of a human lifespan), when your meat stops working (i.e., you die). Law, society, human drama, and fear make it a much more complicated issue than you might realize. Do the dead have rights? Should they?

In the news, the Ask.com Toolbar is malware, Ninite is the closest thing to a Windows repo you'll ever find, and Google Authenticator just implements TOTP, which you can totally use for two-factor authentication in anything. Also, Adobe updated their software suite to be subscription only (and this is a good thing).

GeekNights 20130502 - Camping

2013-05-02 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on the GeekNights Lounge, we discuss camping. Several people we know have never been properly camping. Fires, hobo meals, pooping in the woods: it's all here! We also ridicule the remaining self-described anarchists who pull crap like this every May Day.

x

Share: GeekNights 20130502 - Camping

GeekNights 20130430 - Monaco: What's Yours is Mine

2013-04-30 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, having waited since 2010 for this, we finally are able to review the fantastic Monaco. TL;DL: It's an unqualified "must buy." Recall that we interviewed Andy Schatz on the subject once. Also, Counter-Strike: GO gets an update, bringing back a classic map and a widely misunderstood Operation Payback, and Papers Please looks extremely promising.

x

GeekNights 20130424 - Anime we're not watching

2013-04-24 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about some anime we knew of, but never bothered to watch, as well as anime we watched for a while, but then stopped. From the shounen fighting shows that had a few good starting episodes following by neverending fights (Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Yuyu Hakusho, etc...) to the crappy knockoff TV show reboots of otherwise good shows (El Hazard: The Wanderers, Tenchi TV, Lodoss), from shows we straight ignored despite being constantly talked about (Nadesico) to those we watched more than half of before just stopping (Ergo Proxy, Kaze no Yojimbo). Some shows just aren't worth watching (until you're old and have nothing better to do: Legend of the Galactic Heroes, GaoGaiGar). Before that, Rym gives a more detailed review of Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World), which is basically a psychic 1984, and Monaco is real and playable!

GeekNights 20130422 - RSS and Google Reader

2013-04-22 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, in light of Google Reader's death, we discuss why we've been saying for years that RSS is, at best, dying a slow death. We further discuss whether or not it's best to call the police on an agitated, aggressive homeless man, or to let him remain agitated and aggressive on his own. In the news, CISPA's passing the house gave us a nice list of who to never vote for again, baseball coding software couldn't account for a crazy thing that happened in a game, and acetaminophen may affect the brain in ways you didn't realize.

Also, Futurama was re-canceled, and GeekNights is going to Australia!

GeekNights 20130418 - Drugs

2013-04-18 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about drugs (which means we talk about pseudoephedrine, Dimetapp, LSD, marijuana, alcohol, caffeine, immortality, and transhumanism, in about that order). Heading that up, Daft Punk's new album is eagerly anticipated, and New York is not an amusement park.

x

GeekNights 20130416 - Games only Scott Likes

2013-04-16 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, an echo of our previous Games only Rym Likes episode, Scott discuses the games that he alone likes (or else that he feels are surprisingly forgotten). Before that, "always on consoles" and why Adam Orth was so wrong, Luke Crane and Thor Olavsrud's announcement of Torchbearer, and the Castle of Illusion remake.

Scott's Games: King's Bounty Descent Shogo Mobile Armor Division (which used the Lithtech engine) MechWarrior 2 Yoshi's Cookie Kung Fu Heroes Little Ninja Brothers Dig Dug 2 Alfred Chicken Dr. Chaos Metal Marines Wario Land 2 Mario Kart Super Circuit Conquest of the Crystal Palace Legacy of the Wizard Faxanadu Dynamite Headdy

GeekNights 20130410 - MoCCA Fest 2013

2013-04-10 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we relate our experience at MoCCa Art Fest 2013. We bought less than usual, there were some changes now that it's under the umbrella of the Society of Illustrators, but it was mostly the same old MoCCa we know and love. In the news, the Internet Rage Machine saw a full and complete cycle around the Saga #12 "banning" from the Apple app store, which raises the related question of why Apple treats apps as second class citizens (to movies and books) when it comes to free speech, curation, and censorship. Rym and Emily saw Up On Poppy Hill - Goro Miyazaki's latest movie - and it is frankly excellent. Also, itchy beards.

From MoCCa, check out Pencil Pup, Nurse Nurse, Bunny Mom, Strong Female Protagonist, Khutulun the Wrestler Princess, and some Lemongrab. From GeekNights, check out GeekNights Presents Utena!

GeekNights 20130408 - High Bandwidth Content Distribution

2013-04-08 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider how video (and other high bandwidth one-way content) is distributed on the Internet, including a brief history of satellite television in North America and how its unresolved issues remain to this day. In the news, FOX threatens to go cable-only if Aereo isn't shut down, different levels of shady are occurring with ISPs and HTML content, and France doesn't understand the Streisand Effect. Rym enjoyed a bomb scare outside his office, Amazon amazingly mis-delivered a package, wallets seem to be the hot thing to Kickstart, and Lawdingo seems like an interesting way to find a lawyer.

GeekNights 20130402 - Ground Floor and some PAX

2013-04-02 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we triumphantly return from PAX East 2013! Or, at least one of us does. Rym was laid low with a serious flu post-PAX from which he is still recovering, and you'll hear his various coughing fits reconstructed for you in glorious mp3 form! We talk a bit about Shovel Knight, Ducktales Remastered, Scott's enjoyment of X-Com now that he's playing it, PAX East, and our extremely disheartening experience with Ground Floor. It feels like it should be a good game, but nonintuitive mechanics in key areas obfuscate its surprisingly light core, and more importantly, it takes far to long to play for what it is.

x

GeekNights 20130313 - Wolf Children

2013-03-13 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, Emily replaces Scott to review Mamoru Hosoda's Wolf Children, which we just saw at the International Children's Film Festival. We also are performing FIVE lectures at Anime Boston 2013!

GeekNights 20130311 - Everyday Technology

2013-03-11 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, after considering surprise evictions of illegal apartments, pit traps, punji sticks, esoteric specialist problems with pypy, and the things they don't teach you at RIT, we consider the technology we use every day. From cameras to GeekNights' audio studio, cell phones to other cell phones! Everything!

GeekNights 20130305 - Why Nobody can Find a Gaming Group

2013-03-05 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider why the question of "how to find a gaming group" is so ubiquitous in every corner of the Internet. While it might seem cruel, and perhaps even mean, we posit that perhaps the majority of those actively seeking are some combination of:Not in a cityUnable to find off-the-RADAR gamersAre "that guy"Before this, we don't talk about the PS4, but then do discuss the Natural Selection 2 Gorgeous Update (babblers!) and the Kobolds Ate My Baby Kickstarter.

We're presenting Practical Game Theory and Mastering Game Mechanics at PAX East 2013! ConnectiCon is still accepting panel submissions! The GeekNights Gaming Grande Prix is underway!

GeekNights 20130227 - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic

2013-02-27 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the recent My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic. We also realize it's cyberpunk season, and we're rewatching anime with gusto. In the news, Rym GeekBites From the New World (Shin Sekai Yori), Otakon is branching out into Las Vegas, and we learn why the golden age of Disney animated television came and went.

x

GeekNights 20130225 - Augmented Reality

2013-02-25 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, in light of the recent opening of applications for early access to Google Glass (nevermind forum discussions), we discuss the promise of Augmented Reality. But first, we discuss non-standard uses of naan (get it?), New York groceries, the rise and fall of SuperDaE, and a surprising "solution" to the problem of poor Youtube performance. Also, the GeekNights Gaming Grande Prix is still accepting applications!

x

GeekNights 20130221 - The Great Gatsby

2013-02-21 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

The Great Gatsby is a classic novel that, surprisingly, neither Rym nor Scott had ever read. Considering that a fantastic-looking movie is coming in the nearing future, we'll have but one chance to read the novel ahead of seeing it, so what better time than now?

Per Amazon: The Great Gatsby stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted “gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,” it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s.

But, before we tackle this, we talk about centaurs, armagnac-soaked bread, shipping things to Australia, Rymblr, an ancient technology called "fax," and the GeekNights Grand Prix. Also, the next book club book is going to be The Player of Games (Culture).

GeekNights 20130219 - Glory to Rome

2013-02-19 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the difficult to acquire re-skin of Glory to Rome. It's a solid game, and worth owning. Just make sure you don't accidentally buy the old one. Also, NVIDIA launches the GTX Titan video card, and Valve officially launches Linux Steam.

x

Share: GeekNights 20130219 - Glory to Rome

GeekNights 20130211 - Routers

2013-02-11 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, Rym saves a dead hard drive with one of the oldest tricks in the book, rumors are going around about an Apple watch interface (in light of the recent Pebble shipments forthcoming and talk of Corning Willow Glass), professors and educators seem to be very quick to reject technology in the classroom, and we answer whether or not you can erase yourself from the Internet.

Don't forget we have both GeekNights Presents and many of our convention lectures up on Youtube! And submit your panels, workshops, presentations, and lectures to ConnectiCon 2013!

GeekNights 20130207 - Fake Geeks

2013-02-07 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on a very special GeekNights, we tackle the (rightfully) contentious issue of "fake geek girls" and the wider discussion of "fake" geeks/nerds/fans. Why is this even a thing? Why not "fake football dudes?" What do these labels really mean? Is it simply latent sexism (yes), or are there other factors also at play? (also yes). We try to take this on with a more subtle opinion than most people on both "sides" of the issue have taken in this great wide Internet, and you may be surprised with our thoughts. Suffice it to say, however, the people who actually, with genuine intent, use the term in any of its permutations, are bad people who probably also think "Ladder Theory" is a valid, well, anything.

BUT FIRST, an awesome subway conductor, Google Hangout adds manual bandwidth controls, conspiracy nuts think calling them conspiracy nuts is, predictably, a conspiracy, we consider "Rym's theory of fasted hadouken," and Penny Arcade appears to have a crossover character with Oglaf.

x

Share: GeekNights 20130207 - Fake Geeks

GeekNights 20130205 - Adventure Games

2013-02-05 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about the faded, then revitalized "genre" of point-and-click (or "type in a command") adventure games! From King's Quest to Quest for Glory, Space Quest to Full Throttle, Grim Fandango to Police Quest, nevermind Maniac Mansion or Day of the Tentacle, we recall what these games were to us as kids, and what they are to us now, all of this in light of a recent little game called Kentucky Route Zero.

Also, Scott's Hexbright Kickstarter flashlight finally arrived (with disastrous consequences), Rym's office has a meme infection, Dungeon Village is perfect if you like dungeons and need something cute to poke, and augmented reality may well bring trouble to tabletop board games.

We've uploaded the third and final video of our recent MAGFest appearances - Video Game Ethics - and we're ready to rock two PAX East lectures.

x

GeekNights 20130130 - Star Wars and Saga

2013-01-30 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we bring to you some initial thoughts on Star Wars (Wood) and Saga (Vaughan). They're both worth reading. Star Wars is reminds one of TIE Fighter, and Saga reminds one of The Incal and The Fifth Element. We also consider a crazy guy on the bus to MAGFest, fake cabs, the upcoming Ghost in the Shell: Arise, K.C. Green's Regular Show, TM Revolution appearing again at Otakon (we interviewed him once and talked about it), us continuing to be blacklisted from Otakon, and more!

Don't forget that ConnectiCon Panel Submissions are open (you have to register for the site), and Anime Boston Panel Submissions end THURSDAY.

GeekNights 20130124 - Parking

2013-01-24 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, thanks to a listener suggestion, we discuss... parking. In the "lounge," Rym updated his Flickr with stuff, was peed on by an elderly gentleman, witnessed a water cup getting put in its god damned place, and lamented the folly of youth. Scott didn't want to do a new show on taxes, nor did he want to do one on defecation.

x

GeekNights 20130122 - Impressions of Android:Netrunner

2013-01-22 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk a bit about Android: Netrunner, which we've been playing of late. In the news, HOOOOCKEYYYYY is back, Kotaku has some forward looks at five coming tabletop games, and Dungeons & Dragons classic books are available online as PDFs for reasonable prices.

x

GeekNights 20130108 - MAGFest 11 and Three Board Games

2013-01-08 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we bring you our coverage of MAGFest 11, along with impressions of three board games: The Castles of Burgundy (buy it), Core Worlds (skip it), and VivaJava (worth a second look). Along the way, we complain about the only thing worth complaining about at MAGFest (the ridiculous wristbands), recall our epic joint victory over the Petian and Philippian alliance in Eclipse, remember the fantastic dance party DJ'd by none other than Yuzo Koshiro (Actraiser, Streets of Rage), and wonder if Team Stompadon will continue their meteoric rise in the Super Art Fight circuit.

We'll have video from this year up soon, but check out last year's MAGFest:MAGFest X HighlightsGaming Intellectuals: Money Making GamesBeyond Dungeons & Dragons

GeekNights 20121225 - Hotline Miami

2012-12-25 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on a very special Christmas episode of GeekNights, we review pumping, stylistic Hotline Miami. Before that, we consider the best Christmas movie ever made, Skiing and zeal, the God of Cedar Point, Scott commanding in Natural Selection 2, and Rym's experiences managing a CounterStrike: GO server (in all its undocumented glory).

x

Share: GeekNights 20121225 - Hotline Miami

GeekNights 20121219 - Winter Anime 2012-2013

2012-12-19 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review, based solely on a single picture and short description, all of the anime series listed here for winter of 2012-2013 (you can follow along with the image). One normally shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but anime? It's a pretty safe bet in most cases. But before that, Hobbits, Mononoke Hime, Jellies (Nyar), the sad story of WarZ, and the Anime Boston Tipping Guide. We've also launched a new show! GeekNights Presents, starting with a detailed analysis of Shoujou Kakumei Utena. We have about 40 more episodes of this to go, but we won't increase the speed at which we upload/produce them unless you guys spread the word!

GeekNights 20121217 - Internet Governance

2012-12-17 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider a topic which should be much more boring than it is: the governance of the Internet, particularly in light of the US's recent refusal to sign a UN treaty related to it. Before that, Rym has further adventures in HVAC, Twitter opens up your tweet history, we lament the "web we lost" and what that really means (hint: an eventual move to a federated replacement for Twitter, or possible to a future G+), we consider the resurgence of an ancient argument about ad blocking (spoiler: if you give me data, I will do with it what I will), and we wonder on the idea that an API could be considered a National Treasure.

Also, ConnectiCon 2013 Panel and Workshop submissions are live! And, we launched a new show! GeekNights Presents. And, we're going to MAGFest! And, you should spread the word on our video content if you want us to make more of it!

GeekNights 20121213 - Off the Grid Geeks

2012-12-13 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the strange yet common case of very geeky/nerdy people with deep interests who, for whatever reason, seem to have zero connections outside of a tiny, single community related to said interests. They love games, but have never heard of PAX. They love anime, but don't know anyone else who does. They attend one fan convention, and don't know others exist anywhere. They're super into Advance Wars, but didn't know any sequels ever came out. But, before that, in... The Lounge... we consider a tale that hearkens back to The Bamboo, a new subway tunnel(pre-grime), and Google Maps on the iPhone.

Also, ConnectiCon 2013 Panel and Workshop submissions are live! And, we launched a new show! GeekNights Presents.

GeekNights 20121211 - How to Not Suck at Taking Your Turn

2012-12-11 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we discuss the finer points of taking one's turn in another installment of our long running series: How to Not Suck. It turns out there are ten simple things one must do to take one's turn in a timely fashion. Ask rules questions immediatelyPay attention to the gameConsider moves when it's not your turnRecognize when a decision is arbitraryRecognize when a decision is effectively arbitrary due to your own lack of processing abilityDevelop directional heuristicsIf in doubt, maximize the simplest available positional heuristicUse pattern recognition to develop heuristicsLearn mechanical skills (e.g., shuffling cards)Develop a gaming lexiconIn the news, Street Fighter X Mega Man is real, and the Wii-U has ridiculous time-based restrictions in Europe. GeekNights 20121203 - Network Sniffing and Programmers

2012-12-03 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about network sniffing and programming. But first, rural landlines are dropping calls, but not for the reasons you might expect. iTunes 11 came out, to the usual fanfare and undeserved anger. CDs are old. MagFest is coming (we'll be there presenting)! Our CS:GO server is live. Enforce.

GeekNights 20121129 - Conrad Kreyling

2012-11-29 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights we are happy to have our good friend and Internet celebrity Conrad Kreyling (@konistehrad) as our guest! You may know him from our PAX Dev panel, or perhaps from Johnny Wander. He's an all around awesome dude who also happens to work at Muse Games (who you may know from the recent hit Guns of Icarus: Online).

We talk about how he became an awesome geek and exceptional coder (he's RIT alum: we've known him since he cosplayed as safety barrels cosplaying as Naruto). We hit on Guns of Icarus, MOBAs, video cards, fighting games, Wreck-It Ralph, Looper, James Bond, Tycho's Prostate Rap from PAX East 2011, and Chamisou Original.

GeekNights 20121127 - Seasons

2012-11-27 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review Régis Bonnessée's Seasons. (Spoiler: it has a rondel). It's an OK game, but we find it difficult to recommend to anyone in particular. In other news, the Steam Autumn Sale is in full... steam..., Rym hit up the fancy Fang Gourmet Tea, the Wii-U happened (but we didn't notice), Hotline Miami is good but buggy, Magical Drop V is out (but buggy), and we have an official GeekNights Counter Strike: GO server. We also answer some interesting questions on cheating and "cheapness" from listener Sr.A.

GeekNights 20121119 - Adam Becker - The Freelance Astrophysicist

2012-11-19 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, thanks to @konistehrad, we have Adam Becker, the Freelance Astrophysicist, as our guest. We talk a lot about science! Along the way, we hit on the differences between a Computational Cosmologist (which Adam is) and other disciplines, consider the true implications of general relativity at the macro scale, ask "where all the lumpy" came from, consider the perfect pencil, question the Standard Model, wonder about "astro" versus "quantum," and finally get into how one gets into a field like this.

GeekNights 20121115 - The Name of the Wind

2012-11-15 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on the GeekNights Book Club, we review Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind.

This is the riveting first-person narrative of Kvothe, a young man who grows to be one of the most notorious magicians his world has ever seen. From his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, to years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-riddled city, to his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a legendary school of magic, The Name of the Wind is a masterpiece that transports readers into the body and mind of a wizard.

All in all, it's OK. Not great, not terrible, enjoyable enough, but not quite as fun as The Lies of Locke Lamora. Do note that we are at times quite harsh on the work, its merits nonwithstanding. Simply put, the book is not bad, or else we would actually have little to say. It is good enough that we must bring to bear our strongest criticisms, for it falls just short of being excellent. We both look forward to the continued growth of the author, and consider this a wonderful young adult fantasy novel.

We've discussed this book on two other occasions: relating to arrows and knees, and just as we'd finished it.

GeekNights 20121113 - Burning Con 2012

2012-11-13 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, dateline November 1st, 2012, we bring our our coverage of Burning Con 2012: The TRIADUMVIRATE. Of course, we have more, ranging from hurricanes to hats, Chess (particularly Bobby Fischer's alternate rules) to Hearts. We remember Danish role playing games and sing further praises of Characteristics of Games.

In more newsworthy pursuits, we pursue Natural Selection 2 and Guns of Icarus Online (which I hear has boarding). It's a good time for PC gaming, that's for sure!

GeekNights 20121107 - Area 88: The Blue Skies of Betrayal

2012-11-07 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the 1985 OAV: Area 88: The Blue Skies of Betrayal (directed by the late Hisayuki Toriumi, also known for Lily C.A.T.). In the news, Rym lost his banana, the awful Tenchi Muyo GXP is airing late at night when nobody will (thankfully) ever see it, and the original Tenchi Muyo movie Tenchi Muyo in Love is actually worth watching.

GeekNights 20121105 - Internet Relay Chat

2012-11-05 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we discuss IRC (Internet Relay Chat), from a historical, functional, and cultural perspective (which we've lectured on before). We also consider the uproar around advertisements in Ubuntu (and its ramifications for the state of Desktop Linux, nevermind the idea that the worst computer users need the best hardware) and Twitter takes a nice tack on copyright takedowns. Rym acquired some delicious Applejack, Gchat never truly replaced AIM/ICQ, and a fox with bombs reminds us to celebrate Guy Fawkes day.

Most importantly, Ponies are coming.

GeekNights 20121101 - Hurricane Sandy

2012-11-01 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, back online from hurricane Sandy, we bring our relatively comfortable hurricane Sandy experience. We would have returned on Tuesday, but Scott is unable to bike in slightly cold weather. In the news, Rym finally gets Scott to talk a little politics as he officially endorses Barack Obama for the US Presidency. You should also check out Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight blog. NBC has some difficulty with the Creative Commons, Scott made a nice time lapse of the hurricane,

GeekNights 20121024 - One Piece 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island

2012-10-24 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, low on energy and flush with despair, we review the sixth One Piece movie: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island (ワンピース the movie オマツリ男爵と秘密の島). It's over 90 minutes of... well, pretty-much every other anime movie based on a franchise but unable to affect the canon of said franchise. But, it was directed by Mamoru Hosoda. In the news, the new My Little Pony comic book is outselling Uncanny X-Men. See you at Burning Con this weekend!

GeekNights 20121022 - Contributing to Open Source Projects

2012-10-22 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we discuss the contribution of code or other assets to Open Source projects, focusing on some of the barriers to doing so (e.g., drama, non-code assets, community issues, and so forth). Also, Amazon engages in full DRM-dickitude, and Italy jails scientists for failing to predict an earthquake (echoing North Carolina's ridiculous proposed anti-science legislation).

GeekNights 20121018 - Real Haunted Houses

2012-10-18 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider what it would take to make a haunted house to actually cause a fear response in the likes of us, while Rym recalls his experiences at The Terror on Church Street. But before that, Rym survived Brazil (a.k.a. New York State income tax), The GoPro3 Black exists, and we debate the ramifications of arresting people who attempt, but fail at, terrorism.

GeekNights 20121016 - Traders of Genoa

2012-10-16 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we discuss the board game (Traders of) Genoa. Scott still has terrible luck at FTL, while Rym appears to be cheating. Monaco is coming to both the Xbox and the PC (you should buy the latter version), and you should recall that we had Andy Schatz, its creator, on GeekNights long ago! X-Com has answered all of Rym's prayers, but he still won't buy it. The New York Comic Con happened, but had no real gaming content and nothing of note to cover. (Or, possibly, we're just super jaded by a decade of conventions and some years of living in New York). Also, Hearts!

Don't forget Burning Con 2012 and this week's NerdNYC Board Game Night!

GeekNights 20121010 - Gravity Falls

2012-10-10 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the delightful Gravity Falls. But first, Scott is buying an new pillow, I want you all to contribute to #ikuharaWorld, we're not bothering with the New York Comic Con this year, the Madoka Magica movie did indeed make it to the United States, and we discuss Pitch inflation. Also, in the spirit of Halloween, prepare yourself for the visage of Frankenstein's Monster, aka a hockey goalie in the days before facemasks.

The GeekNights IRC channel is rocking! Also, we need to know if you want us to do one or more of: An episode-by-episode analysis of Shoujo Kakumei Utena, OR, Scott muckspreading. Finally: Ultra Relax!

GeekNights 20121008 - Hardware Sabotage

2012-10-08 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, in light of the results of a recent US congressional investigation's findings against Chinese firm Huawei, we talk a bit about hardware exploits and security concerns on a high level. But, before that, Rym's Lenovo X230 had some issues, Scott learned of the tragic ring of fire, Raising the Bar reveals a horrifying reality, and Rumble 2012 was streamed with an amazing degree of incompetence. Also, PAX East badges are on sale, and will sell out.

GeekNights 20121004 - The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare

2012-10-04 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on the GeekNights Book Club, we bring our review and thoughts of G. K. Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday, published in 1908. It's an Edwardian thriller following a policeman sent to infiltrate the grand anarchist council only to find that it's full of other policemen with similar intents! It's an amusing and relatively enjoyable work, but it would be greatly served by a loose re-imagining in a modern format.

But first, we discuss Mr. Bubble, a ridiculous real-life sitcom-esqe request on Reddit (and the futility of such a thing in light of modern media), and whether cold or warm water hydrates one's body with greater speed (this becoming merely a vehicle, or dare I say, a pretense, for, shall we say, an argument).

For your reference, Scott's Choice for the next book will be The Name of the Wind.

GeekNights 20121002 - FTL

2012-10-02 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, as our triumphant return to business as usual, we review the fantastic FTL. We also review Organ Trail: Director's Cut and Ten Thousand, as well as the masterful book Characteristics of Games. Look for us at Burning Con '12: The TRIADUMVIRATE, but not at the New York Comic Con (where nothing looked interesting enough to apply for press passes this year). Be sure to check out our new GeekNights IRC channel (and check out this delightful little web page about IRC).

GeekNights 20120918 - PAX Prime 2012 and the LoL Championships

2012-09-18 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we share some of our thoughts on PAX Prime and PAX Dev 2012, descending rapidly into a ridiculous argument over the League of Legends tournament present therein the former. In the news, Valve's Greenlight gets a fee and its first ten titles, and World of Warcraft has been secretly watermarking your screenshots.

GeekNights 20120912 - Guest Hosts: Ub Iwerks

2012-09-12 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights our guest hosts from Those Darn Cats! present Ub Iwerks, the largely unsung co-creator of Mickey Mouse. But before that, they GeekBite the obscure film "All This and World War II" and the anime Humanity Has Declined.

GeekNights 20120910 - My Phone is Too Big and a Tech News Roundup

2012-09-10 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, back (temporarily) from travel, we complain at length about the growing size of cell phones, and then launch into a tech news roundup of everything important we've missed. In a very particular order: GoDaddy fails us for the last time, nearly everyone wants Google Fiber, surveywalls replace paywalls, Amazon backs out of their no-opt-out ads on the Kindle Fire, at least one person throws a hissy fit about Microsoft's handling of the Do Not Track option, and "free market ideology" correlates with all sorts of crazy.

GeekNights 20120821 - CounterStrike GO First Thoughts

2012-08-21 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we prepare for PAX Prime and PAX Dev, but not before playing copious amounts of CounterStrike: Global Offensive now that it's live. You may recall a very old show we did about CounterStrike, and CS:GO has done nothing but rekindle that flame. In the news, Nintendo Power has run its course, as has the ill-fated OnLive.

x

GeekNights 20120815 - The Ranks of the Black Order

2012-08-15 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights we review another comic lent to us by Timo with The Ranks of the Black Order (Les Phalanges de l'Ordre Noir), a brutally honest and compelling tale echoing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War. In the news, the MOCCA is being subsumed by the Society of Illustrators. Expect a dearth of shows in the nearing future between PAX Prime/PAX Dev, a great deal of personal travel, and CounterStrike: GO.

GeekNights 20120813 - Paying for Stuff

2012-08-13 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk very, very generally about paying for things with technology. We also talk a bit about Jewish weddings, Facebook's continued decline, and the Amazon Cloud Player.

x

GeekNights 20120809 - Tickets

2012-08-09 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, as somewhat of a crab people episode, we present the fascinating topic of tickets (in light of PAX Prime 2012 selling out in record time). Scott GeekBites Getting Started with Dwarf Fortress (recall our interview with Tarn Adams, creator of said Drf Frtrss) and Rym GeekBites Venture Brothers. Rym made a pony video mashup with The Powerpuff Girls (but didn't make it his "Thing of the Day") and Scott has some video of his Summer Streets ride set to the best song in the world. We also, entirely driven by fancy, narrate a Youtube video about a cat).

GeekNights 20120807 - Tournaments

2012-08-07 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, Rym is back from Brazil, and we consider tournaments in a general sense in light of the 2012 Olympic Badminton scandal. Rym also has some thoughts on Guns of Icarus Online after playing a bunch of it this past weekend. In the news, we consider EA's patently ludicrous copyright lawsuit against (an admittedly deserving) Zynga. Also, don't forget that we'll be at PAX Prime and PAX Dev, talking about ethics of game design (among other things)!

GeekNights 20120730 - Technical Certifications

2012-07-30 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we present our candid advice on the value of certifications for computer professionals, especially if they already have university degrees. But first, Scott goes to great lengths to justify the purchase of his new computer (ahead of the UEFI UFIA), and we warn all of you that several disruptions to the GeekNights schedule are imminent, including Djangocon, The FPL Latin America Trading Conference, PAX Prime, and PAX Dev.

x

GeekNights 20120726 - 1Q84: Book Club Review

2012-07-26 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on the GeekNights Book Club, we bring you our thoughts on Haruki Murakami's 1Q84. It's the book club, so we'll assume you've read the book. If not, then this won't make a whole lot of sense (though this bingo card might give you a hint of what happens). But before that, briefly, we consider Facebook's continued failure as an IPO, chained as it is to the sinking boulder of Zynga, Google's Fiber initiative in Kansas City, and announce that the next book in the GeekNights Book Club will be The Man Who Was Thursday.

x

Share: GeekNights 20120726 - 1Q84: Book Club Review

GeekNights 20120724 - Takenoko

2012-07-24 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review Takenoko. But first, we talk a bit about all the games we've bought (but not played) in the Steam Summer Sale like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Dragon Age Origins, Fallout 3: New Vegas, Oblivion, and Sim City 4. We also lament how everyone votes for Rym in the "vote who wins" game (and Carcassonne). Also, we'll be at PAX Prime and PAX Dev!

GeekNights 20120718 - Incal

2012-07-18 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review The Incal in all its craziness (though we avoid any spoilers, as you really just have to read this thing to understand it). We've returned from ConnectiCon 2012, which was dangerously successful, only to find that there is a new Sailor Moon anime in the works, and Naoki Urasawa is an awesome convention guest!

x

Share: GeekNights 20120718 - Incal

GeekNights 20120710 - Pokemon Conquest

2012-07-10 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we fully review Pokemon Conquest: aka Nobunga's Poke-ambition (or Nobunaga's, if you can spell). It's an OK poke-battling game, but falls short in every other area. We also consider the ramifications of Stream Greenlight, and make predictions as to the eventual failure and disappointment from the somewhat ludicrous OUYA game console kickstarter. Back-of-the-curve hardware coupled with an app-store business model does not a console make.

Also, ConnectiCon 2012 is this weekend, and there's a hugely full schedule of events. We're also happy to be able to announce our lecture at PAX Prime 2012: Short Subjects in Gaming. We'll be covering rhythm games, skill games, and ethics in games, among other things, in a format similar to our previous Triple Threat (which featured MMORPGs, Game Communities, and Dudebro).

GeekNights 20120702 - Hardware Lockdown and Secure Boot

2012-07-02 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider all of the awful concerns around UEFI's SecureBoot, which is bad, but not as bad as the evils of the past, as well as Cisco's dubious command and control firmware updates and problems stemming from the leap second that gave us a long weekend. Google Plus also now has developer-facing functionality that is ripe for some low-hanging-fruit execution of ideas! Rym, after a week without a smartphone, is finally back in the cyber fold. ConnectiCon 2012 is coming NEXT WEEKEND, and you should be there if you live within a few hours drive of Hartford!

GeekNights 20120626 - Cards Against Humanity and Real Money Auction Houses

2012-06-26 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review Cards Against Humanity (a worthy successor to Apples to Apples, and then consider the ramifications of the Real Money Auction House (RMAH) and related systems on the gaming world at large. Diablo III, after all, is just the beginning of this. We also note that Pokemon Conquest is pretty fun so far, and don't forget ConnectiCon 2012 is fast approaching!

GeekNights 20120620 - Polar Bear Cafe, Kids on the Slope, Japanese Folktales

2012-06-20 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we present some initial thoughts on three lovely anime: Polar Bear's Cafe, Kids on the Slope, and Folktales from Japan. While none are terribly prominent in the fan community, they're all definitely worth watching! Also, Rym GeekBites A Cat in Paris and Scott reminds us to both preorder The Underwater Welder and that Scott's Box will return at the turn of the tide.

x

GeekNights 20120618 - Laptops in 2012

2012-06-18 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, since we haven't addressed the topic in quite some time, we consider the state of laptops (as Rym moves toward upgrading his fairly old Lifebook). But first, we consider what "retina" really means in display technology and glucose-powered fuel cells.

x

Share: GeekNights 20120618 - Laptops in 2012

GeekNights 20120614 - Hats

2012-06-14 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider hats. That, however, is mostly an afterthought as we GeekBite Prometheus, complain about GoPro's extra shoddy bicycle mount (three broke between us just recently), and the Department of Justice is finally going after the big cable companies over their monopolistic and anticompetitive practices.

x

Share: GeekNights 20120614 - Hats

GeekNights 20120604 - Government Hackers

2012-06-04 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, in light of many interesting revelations about Stuxnet and Flame, including having been signed by quasi-legitimate Microsoft certificates and being well beyond commodity security software vendors' capabilities, we consider government hackers and the future of this sort of "cyber" warfar (though there is actually quite a past as well). But first, a couple of extra satellites the US Government happened to have lying around, ICANN's ludicrous digital archery, the coming disaster of arbitrary TLDs like .lol, and Google having won the case that APIs are not copyrightable.

x

Share: GeekNights 20120604 - Government Hackers

GeekNights 20120531 - Rym Returns from Istanbul

2012-05-31 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight brings GeekNights' triumphant return, as Rym himself returns from Istanbul by way of Germany to resume the normal show schedule! We talk about that, but not before some discussion of Toonami's return and a GeekBite of The Avengers, nevermind ConnectiCon 2012 and the changes to our web site! We return. We live. We hunger.

GeekNights 20120515 - Zendo

2012-05-15 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the delightful Zendo. (The most efficient way to purchase it is via multiple copies of Ice Dice). But first, we ramble about clipless pedals, JeepAthon2k, Nintendo's woes, the Portal 2 Testing Initiative, Valve hiring hardware people and considering a "steam box", and even the opening to Eretzvaju.

Also, this episode was recorded some time ago (as Rym is traveling to Istanbul), and at that time PAX Prime was not yet sold out. We must have been prescient.

GeekNights 20120509 - Once Popular Anime and "The Churn"

2012-05-09 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the once massively popular anime of American fandom -- Ranma 1/2, Fushigi Yugi, You're Under Arrest, Kare Kano, to name a few -- and the reasons why they seem to have so rapidly fallen from awareness. In the news, the vestigial New York Anime Festival, like the appendix, lives on, Kids on the Slope is pretty fine so far, Media Blasters' woes illuminate the sad drama of the American anime industry (see posts by "blaster"), and you can wake up with Yoko Kanno (box optional).

x

GeekNights 20120507 - Web Vulnerabilities

2012-05-07 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk a bit about web vulnerabilities (like injection attacks and cross site scripting). But first, Rym and Scott had some fun with the Five Boro Bike Tour, Google has possibly partially lost the Oracle/Java fiasco of a trial, Verizon is planning to offer 911 texts (about a decade too late), and Religion is more dangerous than Porn.

x

GeekNights 20120503 - Gifts for Nerds

2012-05-03 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the precarious problem of purchasing or otherwise acquiring gifts for those of the geek or nerd persuasion. But first, there's some (overtime) hockey afoot, Taskrabbit is actually a useful way to get other people to do things for you, and people with shitty friends are angry that someone might pay said shitty friends to promote terrible products to them.

Also, don't forget we'll be appearing at Zenkaikon 2012 next weekend, nevermind the upcoming Connecticon and PAX Prime (and Otakon, unless they still hate us).

GeekNights 20120501 - Luke Crane on the Mouse Guard RPG

2012-05-01 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we have as our guest Luke Crane, designer of the wonderful Mouse Guard tabletop role playing game. We discuss what Mouse Guard is, where it came from, and what makes it unique. We actually had Luke on the show a while ago to talk more generally about role playing games, so check that out while you're here!

GeekNights 20120425 - Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine

2012-04-25 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we preview, based on the first three episodes streaming at FUNimation's site, Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Minen-the-third-fujiko-mine">Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. It's pretty good. In the news, an incident or two from Anime Boston 2012 have been making the rounds with the usual locked thread response, and Tor abandons DRM in a move that shouldn't be as bold as it appears in light of the rest of the publishing industry.

In more local news, we'll be at Connecticon (and so be should you), Zenkaikon, MoCCA Fest, PAX Prime, and maybe Otakon!

GeekNights 20120423 - The Age Old Problem

2012-04-23 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we discuss one of the most ancient and vexxing problems in software, technology, and progress: the principled stubbornness without an underlying functional argument. AKA, why this guy should have added a semicolon. In the news, Intel unveils Ivy Bridge, and some billionaires and to mine an asteroid. In more local news, we'll be at Connecticon (and so be should you), Zenkaikon, MoCCA Fest, PAX Prime, and maybe Otakon!

GeekNights 20120419 - The Hunger Games

2012-04-19 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on the GeekNights Book Club, we review Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games. It's catching like wildfire, and dubious as we were, we had to see what all the fuss was about. The verdict? It's pretty good. Not great. Not particularly memorable. But, an enjoyable read well worth its short length and engaging story. Also, Rym hipstered up with some PBRs at Control-Flow.

The next book (Scott's choice) will be 1Q84 by Haruki-Murakami. …

2012-04-17 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we return at the turn of the tide, having recovered from PAX, hopefully in time for PAX! We bring you some initial coverage of PAX East 2012, and then consider Werewolf, or Mafia, or Beantown: whatever you call it, we present the Mafia-likes.

2012-04-03 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

We consider the NHTSA's recommendation to cripple car navigation systems, the NHTSA's revelation that US driver's education is wrong about at least one thing, Facebook's battle to protect your passwords, an MIT professor's prediction that in 50 years we can end disabilities, Japan's fear of free speech on the Internet, and the battle over the custody costs of Megaupload's data.

GeekNights 20120322 - Rym in India: Part One

2012-03-22 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, Rym shares the scantest beginnings of his experiences traveling in Mumbai and Hyderabad, India. In the lounge, we consider the unique advantages of satire in the Daily show, as well as an interesting story highlighting how, if you're rich and clever enough, you can indeed break the bank.

Also, ConnectiCon 2012 Panel/Workshop submissions are open! PAX, like Winter, is coming. Don't forget our Youtube Channel!

GeekNights 20120320 - Trigger and Abobo's Big Adventure

2012-03-20 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, Daddy two reviews! Now that Scott's beaten it, we talk about Abobo's Big Adventure, but not before we review Trigger!, which is from the same people who brought us the wonderful Spot-It! (Spoilers: it's actually pretty mediocre, and definitely a disappointment next to Spot-It). In the news, Wil Wheaton's Tabletop is a thing, Game Gear games are coming to the 3DS, and Nintendo is trying to make multiplayer more intuitive despite their (sarcastically) glowing history of this.

Also, ConnectiCon 2012 Panel/Workshop submissions are open!

GeekNights 20120314 - Order of the Stick

2012-03-14 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the fantastic comic by Rich Burlew: Order of the Stick. Why yes, it happens to be a webcomic. In the news, Daryl Surat is heading to neither PAX nor Anime Boston, but to Sakura-con, for one very important reason, Scott geekbites Tezuka's Princess Knight (slow news day).

GeekNights 20120312 - Network Mounted Storage

2012-03-12 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, without getting into any deep technical, boring detail, we talk about network mounted filesystems and the like (SMB, CIFS, NFS, DRBD, etc...). In the news, Rym is back from India and is still tired of the TSA and its attempt to suppress further information showing how useless it is, New York's data are increasingly openly available, and California looks to legalize automated cars following Nevada's progress.

GeekNights 20120227 - Filtering Content

2012-02-27 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about content filtering, but not before a great discussion on OSX Gatekeeper and all of its ramifications (including our bet that Apple will drop the opt-out option within three years and stop selling Macs entirely within five), a good discussion of how we'll be first in line to gargoyle it up with some Google Goggles and a surprisingly long discussion of the Star Wars watching order debate (see The Machete Order).

GeekNights 20120213 - Do Not Track, Ads, and the Free Internet

2012-02-13 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Apparently forgetting Adblock, host-file ad blocking, DVR 30-second skip buttons, mute buttons, VCRs, remote controls, and the queer idea of getting up to make a sandwich, various people are predicting the end of the "free" ad-supported Internet, this time from people honoring "do not track" instructions. Also, some teachers in Ontario are afraid of Wifi, MIT launches a fully automated online course in electronics, and the EU dabbles yet again with the disastrous idea of a "right to be forgotten."

Rym has some thoughts on Deus X: Human Revolution after having finished his 27 hours of play, Microsoft Flight is FREE, and Direct2Drive died and took some games with it (also know as "why I only ever buy games from Steam").

GeekNights 20120124 - Strategy Guides

2012-01-24 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider ye olde strategy guide, which seems to have no place in this modern world. Of course, we talk quite a bit about other things, like THE GIANTS, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Abobo's Big Adventure, Syndicate's re-release on GoG, and The Binding of Issac. Rym's also really into Game of Thrones recently.

2012-01-12 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we bring you our coverage of MAGFest X! Of course, as much as has changed, much has stayed the same, so be sure to check out our coverage of MAGFest 9 too. But first, in the news, CES brings us an interesting device - the Boxee Box Live TV dongle - that doesn't appear to have a market, and the coming battles over "smart TVs" will go predictably nowhere. Also, Kim Jong-il is set to be Lenined.

GeekNights 20120110 - Eclipse Board Game

2012-01-10 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we make our triumphant return from MAGFest X to bring you a review of Eclipse. In the news, PAX East 2012 is sold out (so you'd better have already bought tickets like we warned you), but you can still sign up to be an Enforcer. Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition is coming, and Vox is coming to take the game blogging world by storm.

We also talk about how Burnout Crash is a fantastic 99 cent iPhone game, GUNDAM Online is a thing, and our first playthrough of Beowulf was pleasant if a bit random.

GeekNights 20111121 - Circumventing SOPA

2011-11-21 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, in light of the possibility of the passage of SOPA, which, while not nearly so odious as the CBDTPA, makes the DMCA look scarily reasonable by comparison, we consider the various means of routing around this sort of damage to the Internet. From Elephant DNS to Waste to private Trust Networks

In the news, Best Buy has discounted Apple hardware and Amazon Wireless has one-cent smartphones. We also talk some shop about our recent playing of Shogun.

Tonight on the GeekNights Book Club, we bring you our full and final thoughts on The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm (and the Oxford Comma) by Nancy Farmer. It's a charming, light book, set in a future Africa, that should be an enjoyable read for anyone who isn't a filthy Gondwanan.

2011-10-24 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, as it's a big part of Scott's job, we talk about the Amazon Web Services in a general sense. In the news, Anonymous targets child pron sites (closer to Scott's suggestions for impressive hacks), and Ice Cream Sandwich cometh alongside the Galaxy Nexus. Rym is also disappearing for Japan for some weeks, but this should not interrupt your regularly scheduled GeekNights.

Tonight on GeekNights, in a short special (since Rym is preparing to leave for Japan for a couple of weeks), we talk about our adventure making sushi for the first time. We also talk at length about the TSA's expanding reach, the inability of political discussion to go anywhere (in Scott's opinion), and a proposal to let wealthy land-owners bypass our immigration queues.

We begin with Justice League, Action Comics, Animal Man, Batgirl, Batwing, Detective Comics, Green Arrow, Hawk and Dove, Justice League International, Men of War, O.M.A.C., Static Shock, Stormwatch, and Swamp Thing! Some of them are pretty good. Some of them are, well... Tonight on GeekNights, we talk a but about the problems the maintainers of databases (such as the lawsuit against the time zone database) of fact can face, despite their importance to society and the Internet as a whole. We take more than a moment to mourn the passing of Quickster, and wonder at the future of Google DART, We also have the answer to what "St Oui" was all about.

Second, we want to thank all of our "entries:" remember that even the "worst" creative output is better than no output! If you're going to do something, OWN it. Before this, however, we geekbite Thundercats, and a pretty-cool Madoka Majica poster is sold for way too much money.

Now, we cover the following comics. Some of them are NOT safe for work. However, they're surprisingly not that bad. Some of them are downright excellent, and some of them are fine, just not for us. 2011-09-12 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we wonder what tech news really is, and what's really worth talking about. In the "tech" news, typosquatting is surprisingly powerful (and easy), and South Korea has draconian identity laws on the Internet forcing Google's hand. Don't forget the GeekNights Book Club choice: The Ear, The Eye, and The Arm. Also don't forget the GeekNights Worst Webcomic Contest.

We only discuss the things that made this particular PAX unique, so if you thirst for more general coverage of the things that tend not to change much from year to year, don't forget our previous shows on PAX Prime 2008 (part 1, part 2, part 3) PAX Prime 2009, PAX Prime 2010 (the con and the games), PAX East 2010, and PAX East 2011!

In the news, someone did something old in an uninspired way (but with a Kinect!) and Rock of Ages comes to Steam tonight! Also, don't forget the GeekNights Worst Webcomic Contest!

GeekNights 20110831 - Puella Magi Madoka Magica

2011-08-31 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the wonderful and recent anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica. In the news, we are back from PAX, the Blob ate the Wasp, and you should all read the Feynman comic. It also turns out we already did a show on Horatio Hornblower, and we're going to do a show on Gasaraki.

GeekNights 20110817 - Arrietty the Borrower

2011-08-17 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider Studio Ghibli's Arrietty the Borrower (????????????). In the news, Redline is now available on Booray with English subtitles in Japan, and Black Dynamite has a cartoon.

x

GeekNights 20110815 - HTPCs

2011-08-15 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the humble HTPC (Home Theater PC). When in doubt, use this case and this PSU. In the news, Google buys Motorola Mobility at a premium, and Western governments are panicking about cell phones, messaging, and flash mobs.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110815 - HTPCs

GeekNights 20110811 - Play Dead

2011-08-11 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk a bit about Play Dead, which is playing again. We also have some trojan T-shirts and the sad truth behind the London riots.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110811 - Play Dead

GeekNights 20110809 - Taluva and Reef Encounter

2011-08-09 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review two interesting board games: Taluva and Reef Encounter. Rym is shocked that anyone is surprised by what The Sims Social actually was (crap). Diablo 3 is a clusterfuck of DRM, closedness, and perverse monetization, and Rym has a geekbite for the Android Catan.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110809 - Taluva and Reef Encounter

GeekNights 20110803 - Anime We Want to See

2011-08-03 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the anime we want to see other than Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Third Gig. Otakon was this past weekend and Frank Miller was at Comic Con.

x

GeekNights 20110801 - Git

2011-08-01 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about Git: the fast version control system. First, Scott discovers the sadness of attempting to develop iOS Applications on our poor old Mac Mini (Core Solo), Rym built his HTPC, and GeekNights has a fancy new Facebook page. In the news, commodity face recognition, data mining, and data aggregation will do exactly what we expected and can, among other things, reveal your SSN. Adobe releases a preview of Edge.

x

GeekNights 20110731 - Foundation

2011-07-31 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

This month (July 2011) on the GeekNights Book Club, we discuss Isaac Asimov's Foundation. It's a science fiction classic that every person should read, and it might not be quite what you expect.

The next book, for August 2011, is The Ear, The Eye, and The Arm by Nancy Farmer.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110731 - Foundation

GeekNights 20110728 - Horror

2011-07-28 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we discuss horror and what we enjoy in that genre of media. In other news, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a powerful argument for both the expansion and embracing of a fair-use culture, and Nintendo unprecedentedly cuts the price on the faltering DSI. Also, Scott has never seen Mazes and Monsters, and he lost his fancy water bottle (which he really, really needed to share).

x

Share: GeekNights 20110728 - Horror

GeekNights 20110726 - Half-Minute Hero

2011-07-26 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the refreshing Half-Minute Hero on XBLA. Gamepro moves to a quarterly format and EA buys Popcap for over a billion dollars.

We also consider a number of XBLA games, but only Catherine stands out.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110726 - Half-Minute Hero

GeekNights 20110720 - Galaxy Express 999 Movie

2011-07-20 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider our recent rewatching of the Galaxy Express 999 movie, recently remastered and re-released. Otakon is next weekend, and while we won't be there, Makoto Shinkai and his newest work -- Hoshi o Ou Kodomo -- will be. SDCC is this weekend, it's really, really hot, and Scott's reading Lady Sabre & the Pirates of the Ineffable Aether.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110720 - Galaxy Express 999 Movie

GeekNights 20110718 - Face Recognition and Federated Clouds

2011-07-18 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we begin a discussion on the ramifications of face recognition technology as manifest in its coming ubiquity (and hamfisted attempts at usefulness), then slide into some talk of why the federated cloud is (or at least should be) the real future of computing. We also discuss the "cartels" that can arise when the navigation of bureaucracy becomes more important than the services being rendered, and Google is trying to encourage bad behavior for its own benefit with Google News Badges.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110718 - Face Recognition and Federated Clouds

GeekNights 20110714 - Nothing

2011-07-14 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, it's a show about nothing. We also consider the wider copyright implications of accidental art and monkeys with cameras, nevermind the Internet RAGE about Netflix's minimal price increase. GeekNights will resume its regular schedule next week, the book club will now be its own show, and we will definitely be at MAGFest.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110714 - Nothing

GeekNights 20110630 - Supermarkets

2011-06-30 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the humble supermarket. There are sales everywhere (that matters) with both the Steam Summer Sale and Threadless, Amazon gives California the finger, and the "skills gap" is a serious problem.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110630 - Supermarkets

GeekNights 20110628 - Small World

2011-06-28 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review Philippe Keyaerts' Small World, successor to his Vinci. Rym's surprisingly playing a little Team Fortress 2 again (despite it being free to play), Scott Geekbites F.E.A.R., and Capcom might be doing something sinister with hard-locked save slots.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110628 - Small World

GeekNights 20110622 - Anime Only Rym or Scott has Seen

2011-06-22 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider anime and comics that only Rym, or only Scott, has seen. In order (surprisingly), we thus present Wolverine, Iron Man, X-Men, Galaxy Railways, Birdy the Mighty: Decode, Votoms, Scrapped Princess, Patlabor, Odoru Daisosasen/Bayside Shakedown (which we've actually both seen), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, 7 Billion Needles, Urusei Yatsura (manga), Ranma 1/2, and Rose of Versailles.

But before all of that, Spiderman is dead, AKB48's newest member is fake, and Makoto Shinkai's studio is looking cloud and power line interns.

x

GeekNights 20110620 - DNS Today

2011-06-20 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the ramifications of expanded top-level domains on DNS, as well as the current state of it. In the news, lulzsec exists (in one form or another), Libre Office exists, someone thought 250lbs of paper was a better option than a USB stick, and someone else scanned it all back in anyway.

Also, checkout Game Hack Day if you're in New York!

x

Share: GeekNights 20110620 - DNS Today

GeekNights 20110614 - Hardcored into a Corner

2011-06-14 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we mostly complain about our troubles finding similarly invested board-gaming nerds. We also consider the upcoming Burning Wheel Gold and the Wii-U. We have Things of the Day, but due to Audition being an awesome and well-written program, the audio for that portion of the show is forever lost to time and space. Enjoy them below despite the lack of commentary. Also, Magical Drop V is coming.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110614 - Hardcored into a Corner

GeekNights 20110608 - Hipira and Wakfu

2011-06-08 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, the cute Hipira and the fun Wakfu. DC Comics is trying digital distribution and a universal relaunch, Kevin Smith is putting on a reality show set in a comic shop, and Foreskin man might be somewhat anti-semitic.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110608 - Hipira and Wakfu

GeekNights 20110606 - Cooling Computers

2011-06-06 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about removing heat from computing devices of various kinds. But first, we're basically obligated to talk about Apple Day, and Nintendo successfully fended off lulzsec by cleverly not actually offering any real services.

Also, help out a friend in his quest to stop ALS (and bike really, really far).

x

Share: GeekNights 20110606 - Cooling Computers

GeekNights 20110602 - Gameshows

2011-06-02 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about Gameshows! In the news, one archaic industry documents the decline of another with the demise of the phone book, and Youtube now supports the Creative Commons license explicitly.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110602 - Gameshows

GeekNights 20110531 - R-Eco and Battle Line

2011-05-31 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider two two-player warm-up card games: R-Eco and Battle Line (a remake of Knizia's earlier Schotten-Totten). We also consider our recent CounterStrike play (more to come), the DS Lite price drop, and Activision's coming subscription service for Call of Duty.

Also, if you're so inclined, take a gander at our good friend's team for the Tri-State Trek to fight ALS.

x

GeekNights 20110525 - Hajime no Ippo

2011-05-25 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the Hajime no Ippo (Fighting Sprit) anime (directed by Satoshi Nishimura, who you may remember for directing Trigun)! But first, Takashi Miike is supposedly directing the Phoenix Wright movie, The Big Apple Comic Con had some lackluster press, lost a minor guest due to alleged child pornography charges, and saw the expanding Earth swallow up some of Neal Adams original work.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110525 - Hajime no Ippo

GeekNights 20110523 - Corporate Training

2011-05-23 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, since Rym has training all week, we talk about training in general. But first, Google's My Tracks is better than most alternatives, automobile black boxes may soon be mandatory, and Apple is ready to smash a patent troll.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110523 - Corporate Training

GeekNights 20110519 - Total Recall

2011-05-19 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight, get your aaasss to maaahs with the 90s classic Total Recall. But first, a brave man who fights the tides of Internet comments, a brave man shooting the moon on some Middle Eastern foreign policy, and some manufactured outrage.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110519 - Total Recall

GeekNights 20110517 - Diplomacy

2011-05-17 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the fate of Europe with the classic Diplomacy. (For the record, our game ended with an all-way draw over five hours in). But first, we checked out the NYU Game Center's second annual No Quarter exhibit, Nintendo hates us, and we geekbite Space Chem.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110517 - Diplomacy

GeekNights 20110511 - How we got into it

2011-05-11 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, rather than the old thing of how to get into it, we talk about the new thing: how we got into it. Specifically, the origins of our anime, manga, comic, and convention geekeries. But first, Wakfu is a thing, and the Black Jack OAV is getting a final, eleventh volume.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110511 - How we got into it

GeekNights 20110509 - Memory

2011-05-09 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, tired of complaints about "wasted" RAM, we talk about memory. Fiddleheads aside, we consider whether wireless really is that important to business, and the pwning of Chrome.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110509 - Memory

GeekNights 20110505 - Assassination, Libya, and Osama bin Laden

2011-05-05 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, due partially to popular demand while simultaneously delayed by numerous unrelated hiccups, we bring you a discussion of the practicalities and morals of assassination in a general sense, considering examples from both Pakistan and Libya. (Also, food trucks). In the news, it's apparently pretty easy to convince strangers to take strange pills, and we consider whether the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110505 - Assassination, Libya, and Osama bin Laden

GeekNights 20110503 - Portal 2

2011-05-03 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the fantastic Portal 2. (Hint: there is no reason not to buy this game). We also consider Sony's egregiously inept IT, and Nintendo's egregiously unrealized potential as they move from the Wii to the double Wii with Project Cafe.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110503 - Portal 2

GeekNights 20110427 - Castle Waiting

2011-04-27 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights we review the wonderful Castle Waiting by Linda Medley. Also tonight, consider Mike Toole's exploration of the late and great Osamu Dezaki and a fans' petition to bring back the OLD Transformers comics. We're also back from Anime Boston, and we're still taking panel/workshop submissions for ConnectiCon 2011!

2011-04-13 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, with Emily as our guest host, we talk about all of the art and comics we found at the MoCCA Festival this year. But first, there being little news in this arena, "purified" illegal manga torrents, the Flash, and the 4kids bankruptcy.

We'll post a list of the comics in the forum later on.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110413 - MoCCA Festival 2011

GeekNights 20110411 - SNMP

2011-04-11 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we discuss SNMP: the Simple Network Management Protocol, and how you can trivially use it to monitor Linux servers. In the news, Adobe moves to a subscription model and drops Soundbooth (thankfully), human brains are more malleable than one might think, and Google is liable in Italy for defamation from search results.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110411 - SNMP

GeekNights 20110407 - Book Club: Hyperspace

2011-04-07 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review, under the auspices of the GeekNights Book Club, Michio Kaku's Hyperspace. Scott is happy about a surprisingly effective law against strangulation, and Rym is amazed at the fear young punk kids instill in the old and white of Ohio.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110407 - Book Club: Hyperspace

GeekNights 20110405 - Yomi: Fantasy Strike

2011-04-05 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we review Yomi: Fantasy Strike (from the maker of Puzzle Strike). But before that, Rym has a geekbite on the Rush'n Attack reboot Rush'n Attack: Ex-Patriot (TL;DL: not enough rushing, too much Russian, and far too little attacking) and Scott considers Jane McGonigal's new game Find the Future.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110405 - Yomi: Fantasy Strike

GeekNights 20110330 - Digital Comic Distribution

2011-03-30 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the more interesting bits around the dissemination and consumption of comics in digital form (after arguing about the old men running Broadway). Scott geekbites Peepo Choo, and Rym rambles about the Riverside Trek Fest failing.

x

Share: GeekNights 20110330 - Digital Comic Distribution

GeekNights 20110328 - Logs

2011-03-28 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider that most basic of basics: the humble log file. In the news, Geohot is fighting the good fight, and is the financial world siphoning off all of the world's talent?

x

2011-02-28 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk a bit about model rocketry and its merits as a teaching tool. In the news, Thunderbolt takes flight, and Craigslist is a den of iniquity (according to people who have a vested interest in it failing).

You might also want to go vote (for Rainbow Dash).

x

GeekNights 20110224 - Unions

2011-02-24 :: geeknights@frontrowcrew.com (Rym and Scott - The Front Row Crew)

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider COSplay and costumes, which surprisingly span nearly all possible aspects of geekery (it's not just for anime conventions). We also have sexism in online videogames and an attempted criminalization of intelligent opinion.

x
