(477) The Sound Of Your City

2015-11-13 :: Green Majority Media

This episode features Eric Beynon: President of Sustainable Growth Co. and one of the principal architects of the recently launch $20M Carbon XPRIZE competition. The Carbon XPRIZE is an attempt to engage innovators, designers and engineers of all types from all over the world to close the loop on carbon by creating technology and then hopefully a market for carbon (removed from the atmosphere or distilled out of fuel sources) to be used in physical objects and products. Examples might include things like concrete to both create a market for carbon as an input as well as incentivize carbon removal technologies by providing a profitable use for the results of the process. A game changer? Who knows just yet, but the possibilities are worth considering and something it would be foolish to ignore in a world drowning in carbon it doesn't want (in the air anyways). 2015-04-03 :: Green Majority Media

The show starts with some quick commentary about "online trolls" and whether or not there's any point to engaging with them on environmental issues like climate change. Our main feature this week is an interview with TVO's The Water Brothers! Alex and Tyler Mifflin join us to talk about some of the most exciting parts of filming their eco-adventure show, some timely news items about water including the ongoing water crisis in California, and what to expect from season three. (445) Les Militants

2015-03-27 :: Green Majority Media

We begin the show with a discussion of the recent TTC (metro) shutdown in Toronto due to the rivers of pollution running underneath the city, highlighting the pollution itself but also the attitude towards the value of public services like education and transit in Canada. Despite out best efforts, we didn't end up being able to be at the Green Living Show this year. However, we did end up having David Gray-Donald a student and "les militants" from Quebec who helped us understand some of the differences and disconnections between activism between French and English Canada. We spoke about the ongoing austerity protests, climate, pipelines and more. Stefan leads us in our final segment, with some thoughts on the ongoing student/TA strikes in Toronto and does an excellent job leading us in a short roundtable on the place for communal resources and the value of an education (and other public goods) to tie the show up in a neat little package! (443) Monsoon Season

2015-03-13 :: Green Majority Media

The Toronto Water Doc Festival is coming up soon, so this week we talked to Melanie Howe the Water Docs Programmer right off the bat about some of the films and other screenings happening over the next couple weeks. The festival opens with a (free) screening of the powerful 2014 documentary 'Monsoon' by Canadian writer and director Sturla Gunnarsson. After the second break, we speak to Sturla himself about making the documentary and his time in India. Finally, Stefan attempts to bring us some good news to talk about this week, and Kevin and Daryn do their best to ruin his fun with concerns. :D And of course a reminder that if you are in Toronto (or not) our friends over at LeadNow have organized a rally regarding bill C-51 as well as a petition and some other information you should read about the implications of the bill. (440) Fit Enough to Survive the Future?

2015-02-20 :: Green Majority Media

One of our best shows in a while without a doubt. The main portion of today's show features an interview with Dr. Bob Willard, speaker and author of several books on the topic of business sustainability. This topic is to some a tired one, businesses speak of sustainability frequently but few of them speak about sustainability in a way that actually matches up to the physical limits of our planet. Dr. Willard is not one of them. Easily one of our favorite guests we've had on in quite some time, I can't recommend this interview enough. In a complete surprise, local Toronto celebrity and professional "rabble rouser", democracy and citizen empowerment agent Dave Meslin just happened to be standing outside the studio during the show. During the final music break I ran out and grabbed him to say a few words about his new project 100 Remedies for Democracy. In the second half, Stefan, Kevin and Daryn discuss the news that Ontario Environment Minister Glen Murray announced that Ontario will be pursuing some form of carbon plan. (437) Taxpayers Can Suck It

2015-01-30 :: Green Majority Media

This week we go back to 1992 to listen to one of the most famous environmental speeches in modern history, Severn Cullis-Suzuki at Rio ’92. Has anything changed? Can it still? Next up, we listen to a fabulous clip of Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party of Canada taking the parliamentary secretary to the minister of the environment – Colin Carrie to task for intentionally trying to mislead Canadians about our own CO2 emissions. Finally, the panel dissects a recent “The Agenda” with Steve Paikin episode “Carbon Commitments” that featured industry mouthpiece Candice Malcolm (Ontario Director) for the strongly suspected astroturf group , Canadian Taxpayers Federation on what could have been a serious discussion on the evolution of a federal carbon regulation system. 2014-12-26 :: Green Majority Media

Most of the crew is off this week for the holidays, so Kevin and I freestyle the show and have some fun at the big guys expense. Well, it would be funny if it wasn't so sad... In the first half, we primarily talk about the recent year end CBC interview. We spend the second half hopping around a bunch of other topics including missing and murdered aboriginal women, long term policy outlook in Canada and make some comparisons to Vladimir Putin's Russia. You can read/watch the CBC interview yourself here: http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/full-text-of-peter-mansbridge-s-interview-with-stephen-harper-1.2876934 Image was borrowed from the NDP, but please don't take this as an endorsement, we just liked their graphic :D We do this all this and more for basically nothing, learn more and support us here: www.patreon.com/greenmajority For full listings and more info about this episode visit: https://greenmajoritymedia.wordpress.com/2014/12/26/432-crazy-uncle-harper/…

Kai is also deeply involved in Toronto 350, as well spearheading an upcoming DOC about Climate Change and the Peoples Climate March in NYC earlier this year. Our main interview is with Mike Morrice, executive director and co-founder of the Sustainability CoLab.
