Lucky we Live Hawaii

2013-03-29 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 24s

There is a saying that many Hawaii locals will recognize, and even more might even admit to using (quite frequently). It’s a saying that many vacationers and travelers to Hawaii wish they could announce with truth, yet it’s a saying that instills a certain sense of blessing in both island locals and tourists. It’s a saying that’s become increasingly popular. Perhaps you’ve seen it on a shirt, a beach bag, or even tagged on a street sign. It’s four words that help describe the feeling many locals get when laying on the beach under the warm tropical sun, beer in hand and a weekend in Hawaii to look forward to. It’s “lucky we live Hawaii.”

“Lucky We Live Hawaii” is the title of our new podcast featuring Aloha Bruce and Wayde, a.k.a The Poor Man. Every week you’ll be hearing from us on topics Hawaii related and adventure related. Wayde is an expert when it comes to traversing the island of Oahu by Jeep and by foot, so we know this guy will have some great stories to share with listeners. Stay tuned and get ready for Hawaii Aloha Travel’s newest addition, the “Lucky We Live Hawaii” podcast!

Seating on airplanes to Hawaii

2013-03-22 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 28s

Some say there are ways to enhance a flight, either with a first class seat, purchased amenities, or simply an aisle versus a window spot. Some may disagree however, believing that a seat is a seat and a six-hour flight in the exit row is more or less the same as a six-hour flight in the back of the plane. But according to Skyscanner, an online flight comparison site, there seems to be one lucky seat that tends to make flying easiest. And it’s not first class. It is seat number 6A, a window seat up front.

The Less Visited Islands of Hawaii - Molokai and Lanai

2013-03-15 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 23s

We often hear of the “outer islands” in relation to the major islands, which may give travelers the impression that they are unchartered territory or no-mans land.  Lanai and Molokai may be small and much less populated than any of the other islands, but that doesn’t mean they are not vacation destinations!  In fact, Lanai is known to be the best island destination for honeymooners, weddings, or romantic getaways and Molokai has an equally rich history that can be navigated via mule!  I don’t know if any of the other major islands boast this type of allure.  These two outer islands offers travelers remoteness like nowhere else in Hawaii plus unspoiled views of the coastlines, valleys, and rainforests that are simply unmatched.  Here’s a little more about each of these islands for those interested in a unique retreat that is definitely off-the-beaten-path of traditional Hawaii vacations.

Driving in Hawaii vs. Driving in the Mainland

2013-03-08 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 23s

One thing folks love to reminisce about from their trip to Hawaii is how driving around the island was vastly different from driving on the mainland. While we will agree it’s different, we won’t say that it is vastly different. After all, when us islanders travel back to the mainland, all we can think about is how crazy those drivers are in LA and San Francisco! Seriously, is 80mph really worth the risk?!! But anyways, we posed this topic on our Facebook page and watched as the comments piled up. Some were very true-to-life while others were just plain comical. Our favorite repeat mention was how drivers in Hawaii “drive with aloha.” We recently covered this topic on our blog, but because it’s proved to be so entertaining we’re doing it again. This time with a slightly different spin.

Koko Crater vs. Koko head - Whats' the deal?

2013-02-22 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 17s

Hawaii is notorious for its confusing, hard-to-pronounce landmarks, street names, and towns.  With only 12 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet, many visitors come to the islands and never really learn how to correctly pronounce or identify names, which makes vacationing a little bit harder than normal.  If you’re trying to get to the ocean, but you confuse makai with mauka, then you’ll be finding yourself deep in the valleys of the island in no time.  The same goes for the names of things, such as beaches, hikes, or points of interest.  Our topic today attempts to unveil the mystery and confusion behind the two landmarks on Oahu’s southeast side, Koko Crater and Koko Head.

Hawaii Hotel Resort Fees

Length: 15s

That means you have no option, no choice in the matter of whether or not you want to partake in these amenities that are covered by these resort fees.  You don’t get to choose whether or not you want that newspaper delivered to your door or that one-hour tennis court time reserved or even those fax and copy services made available to you in the hotel’s office.  You’re forced to accept them and further more, pay for them.  But just because we’re doing our fair share of griping doesn’t mean it’s all bad news.  This topic is designed to inform people on how to take advantage of this seemingly annoying little extra fee.  So instead of feeling shocked and pissed off when you see those little number signs slipped onto your bill on a daily rate, heed our advice and allow them to do YOU a favor.

Waterfalls of Hawaii

Waterfalls are a big source of question when it comes to vacationers traveling to Hawaii.  For some, these natural water spectacles might seem like a mythical creature, existing only in dreams and in highly unattainable landscapes.  Or maybe you’ve seen waterfalls online and on TV and think the ones in Hawaii could never compare.  You might even think that in order to access one, you’d have to be some sort of hiker guru or super nature enthusiast.  But no.  None of this is true.

Hiking in Hawaii doesn’t always have to be for the outdoor enthusiast.  If you’re not a hiking extraordinaire, don’t worry!  Because there are plenty of easy walking trails along Oahu that offer the beauty, scenery, and outdoor experiences that any other good hike will offer.  We understand that not everyone comes to Hawaii for the activities; some of you might be allured simply by the sunshine and relaxing days of lounging and leisure.  So if you’re not an active type of vacationer, but still want to enjoy some of Hawaii’s untouched beauty, then here are a couple mellow hikes for you to explore.

It’s no mystery why so many Hawaii vacationers choose Maui over any other island- the crowds are smaller than Oahu, but bigger than Kauai, (offering a varied nightlife), the scenery is unbeatable (living up to it’s nickname “The Valley Isle”), and the beaches are diverse and beautiful.  And speaking of beaches, today we’re highlighting our top five picks of Maui’s stretches of coastline, where golden sand meets turquoise waters and in some instances, a refreshing mai tai is only steps from your beach towel and umbrella.

Are timeshares ruining Waikiki?

2013-01-12 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 14s

Talk has slowly turned into action regarding new timeshare towers in Waikiki, and I believe these changes will have a negative impact to the tourism industry in Hawaii.  With 10,000 timeshare units currently in Hawaii, accounting for 13% of total lodging inventory, this number only continues to increase as fewer stand-alone hotels are being built.  Almost every major hospitality company is either revamping existing hotels into timeshare units or developing completely new timeshare properties.

One of the best things about vacationing to Hawaii is the amount of beauty you will see during your stay.  The islands cover an array of stunning topography, from lush rainforests to golden beaches to black volcanic coastlines, making Hawaii a chain of incredibly diverse islands.  The landscapes are quite possibly one of the biggest attractions for visitors, and the best part about this feature is it’s free!  Although you may get the occasional park entrance fee or parking fee, the majority of the sites to visit in Hawaii simply require a desire for adventure and a craving for nature (and maybe a car…).  Today’s topic covers a few of our favorite scenic views on Oahu, Big Island, Maui, and Kauai.  We receive tons of inquiries on this topic, especially for first time Hawaii vacationers, those who are on a budget, and those with limited time to explore the island.  For anyone else interested, here are our top landscape choices to visit while in Hawaii, we hope you love them as much as we do!

Tips for conquring the ocean on your Hawaii Vacation

Length: 15s

The ocean can either be alluring for Hawaii vacationers or it can be intimidating.  Believe us, we get this.  We know plenty of people that either can’t swim or are terrified of the ocean and what they can’t see beneath them, so it’s nothing new to us when we book vacations to Hawaii for folks like this.  But what we don’t understand is why someone would cut their Hawaii experiences short by allowing the intimidation of the ocean control their vacation.  Chances are, the group you are traveling with is going to encourage you to join them in some sort of water activity, so why not broaden your horizons and give it a try?  Overcoming your fears, whether it’s the ocean, swimming, sharks, boats, or what have you, is the only way to maximize your vacation in Hawaii.

My Favorite Big Island Beach Picks

2012-11-29 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 21s

The Big Island, although the youngest of the Hawaiian Islands, has some of the clearest waters in all of Hawaii along its northwest coast.  While the stretches of sand may not be as expansive as some of the older islands’, (due to less time for development), they are still some of the most spectacular and unique “pocket style” beaches that Hawaii offers.  Many people conjure up images of black, volcanic, rocky coastlines with little or no beaches when they think of the Big Island.  But we’re here to shed some light on that myth and give you a guide to some of the island’s best sandy spots.  On today’s show, we’re going to highlight some of our favorite Big Island beaches, and give you some tips and pointers about each one.  Our first highlight is the very loved and very popular, Hapuna Beach State Park, an excellent location for beach enthusiasts.

Tsunami Saturday in Hawaii -Things you may forget to bring on your Hawaii Vacation

2012-11-02 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 19s

This past week, the state of Hawaii echoed with the troublesome sounds of tsunami sirens.  On Sunday, October 28th, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Canada, causing a tsunami alert in Alaska and Hawaii.  If you’re a visitor to Hawaii during a time like this, the wailing sirens throughout every neighborhood might cause anxiety, especially if you don’t know what the sounds mean.  I think an important rule of thumb for travel is to know the potential threats of the area and be prepared should disaster strike.  For example, Hawaii has a much higher likelihood of hurricanes and tsunamis than earthquakes or tornados, so it’s good to do a bit of research on proper protocol when exploring an unfamiliar location.

Kihei vs.Lahaina on Maui; Which is Better?

2012-09-28 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 20s

When people are thinking about visiting Maui, one of he first decisions they make is what part of the island to visit. Today we discuss the Pro's and Con's of these two different parts of the Island based on a queston we recived from one of our facbook friends Melynne Mitchell.  Kihei is located on the southern part of the island and Lahaina is on the west side of the island and part of the area known as Kaanapali. They both have pretty much the same weather however,  the south side is thought to be sunnier. Kihei is not considers a resort area in that the  accommodations you find there are made up mostly of condos. It's for that reason you'll find more "affordable" prices. Many of these condos are older and have not been renovated in years and are either 3 or 4 star rated property's.

Lahaina is somewhat the "heart" of Maui. it's quaint converted whalers village that is now lined with shops, restaurants and, museums and entertainment of all kinds. There are only a few options for accomodations however the most affordable places to stay on the west side are located here. Because of it's close proximity to Lahaina many people choose to stay in the Kaanapali area because it's home to many fine 4 and 5 star properties.

We go into more detail on the show and big mahalo to Melynne Mitchel for the the questioin

Now is a great time to take advantage of condo rentals in Hawaii, since hotels are starting to already oversell for the fall. As a local travel company, we’ve been booking a lot of condos through our sources lately, due to hotels already being booked for the “slow season”. Condos are becoming a great value, especially because Waikiki is getting so expensive. Hawaii Aloha Travel is able to book a studio condo in Waikiki for 5 or more nights at the rate of $110 per night, and that’s including tax! These days you can’t even find a small hotel room in Waikiki for less than $150, so a studio condo is really giving you more bang for your buck.

For today’s topic we’re going to discuss jet lag, how to deal with it, and acclamation to Hawaii Time.  We asked our Facebook fans if they get jet lagged when traveling to Hawaii and what we discovered was that the jet lag experienced in Hawaii is much less than the jet lag experienced once you’re back home.  Which makes sense.  When flying to Hawaii, you’re traveling west, which means you gain time.  For example, in the spring and summer months of California, if you travel to Hawaii you will gain three extra hours.  In the fall and wintertime, you gain two hours in Hawaii, due to daylight savings time.  Each state varies dependent on its time difference, but regardless, Hawaii Time is earlier than the mainland.

These questions came from a fellow fan and are most likely relevant to a lot of visitors coming to the islands. Let’s talk about the language topic first, and to give you a better idea of the question, here are their exact words, “If I went to France I would try to learn some French before I went, the same in Spain, but would you come off like a clueless haole if you tried to use some Hawaiian phrases while on the Islands - like Aloha! Planning Hawaii Family Vacations

2012-06-28 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 18s

Today’s topic is on small group travel to Hawaii, based on a Facebook follower’s question regarding a Hawaii vacation for his age-varying family: “Traveling with a wide variety of ages and interests.... what is the best way to accommodate everyone...we have 5 children between 3 and 10.... and four adults between 35 and 65.... we'd like to do as much as reasonably possible for everyone to have a memorable time”.

When planning a group travel, even if it’s with family, we always recommend appointing a “group leader”.  Many times, parents take on this role, but if you’re traveling with older people, there may be someone in the group that has more experience in travel planning, or Hawaii, or naturally just wants to take on this role.  Group leaders ensure that everyone gets a little representation while on vacation.  For example, if one of the afternoons is dedicated to shopping for some of the girls, then the group leader should make sure to plan another afternoon that is dedicated to what the other folks want to do.  If it’s surf lessons or a hike to a waterfall, everyone should be able to get one of their preferred activities in.

This topic was sparked when we discovered that the Dole Plantation, in Wahiawa, central Oahu, is the second most visited attraction in all of the Hawaiian Islands, with 1.5 million visitors last year alone. We just don’t get it! The Dole Plantation, although deemed a landmark due to its historical value, is totally touristy in its attractions, gift shop, and things to do. Regardless, this “pineapple experience” has folks coming from around the globe to see and taste the infamous Dole pineapple, but as far as it being an extremely fun activity to do while on Oahu... well, we question it.

Hawaii for the single traveler

Another topic we’ve begun to explore is that of traveling alone and whether Hawaii is a good place for it.  While some may say Hawaii is for romantics and families, others may say the islands are the perfect place for some soul searching, personal relaxation, and single mingling.  I would have to say I agree with both aspects, but would be quick to point out that Hawaii is not a one-type travel destination.  It is extremely unique, multi-faceted, and offers couples, families, and single travelers an experience beyond the norm.

Hawaii as a Family Destination

Many people choose Hawaii as a romantic getaway, honeymoon destination, or wedding location, and we agree; it is absolutely ideal for these types of vacations.  But Hawaii is also extremely favorable to the popular, once-a-year type of travel, lovingly referred to as the annual Family Vacation.  Whether you’re a big family with lots of opinions, or a small family prone to indecision, the islands of Hawaii have something for everyone and frequently bring members closer as a family unit.

Hawaii Island Hopping Tips

2012-05-24 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 33s

One of our most in-demand options for Hawaii vacationers is our island hopping packages; for the simple reason that people want to see and experience as much as possible while traveling. And Hawaii is the ultimate destination for inter-island exploration, as each island is merely 20 minutes from the next. However, there are what we call “guidelines” when it comes to island hopping, mainly for the purpose of maximizing your vacation and minimizing your stress.

For example, we recommend a minimum of four days of relaxation on each island, which includes your travel days. We believe it is possible to do three days per island, but this greatly decreases your chill out time, as 2 out of your 3 vacation days are allocated for travel. Although flights to outer islands are so quick you’ll wonder why you didn’t just swim, they do require packing, driving, waiting in lines, security checks, and everything else that comes along with flying. You may not think this is important, but we know from experience that most people become tired after even the shortest flights.

Making your Hawaii Vacation memorable

2012-05-17 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 17s

We asked our Facebook followers to give us some insight about how they’ve stepped out of their comfort zone while vacationing in Hawaii, and we received some great feedback. While some folks have faced their fears with zip lining and parasailing, others have branched out and tried local foods like poi and loco mocos. Some still have aspirations and dreams of how they plan to go beyond their limits with water sports, dolphin swims, or surfing. A trip to Hawaii can be as adventurous or as relaxing as you’d like, but today let’s focus on the thrill-seeking aspect of travel.

Note to guys: Forget the Speedo if you're comng to Hawaii!

Length: 18s

We posed the question on our Facebook page, “For the gals Bikini or One piece?? For guys Speedo or Board shorts?” and received some interesting, if not enlightening responses.

Many of the women responded with comments about wearing one-pieces and board shorts due to body image issues.  I have a few things to say about this.  First, one-pieces have made a major comeback in the fashion industry, and are currently not (anywhere near) what they used to be.  One-pieces today don’t have to be that regular old Hawaiian flower print from a decade back, they can actually be sexy, strappy, and printed with unique fabrics.  If women are having issues about their body in a bikini, no worries, because one-pieces, now more commonly referred to as monokinis, as just as hot!

You can enjoy Hawaii if you don't swim!

2012-05-04 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 13s

All the Hawaiian Islands are surrounded entirely by water. But to decide not to travel to Hawaii because you can’t swim is assuming Hawaii is only for water enthusiasts. Coming from the islands we can say that there is more (much, much more) to do in Hawaii than just swim in the warm waters. It is true, however, that many vacationers choose Hawaii for this exact reason; to float in the ocean in nothing but a bikini, get some surf action in, or snorkel, but for them to say this is all they did on their entire 7-night stay would be an exaggeration. Plus, the water logged wrinkly skin would just get too ugly, not to mention swimming at night is a bit scary too.

But seriously, Hawaii offers its visitors and residents a plethora of land activities. Hiking, sightseeing, driving tours, museums and parks, shopping, zoos and aquariums, botanical gardens and waterfalls, volcanoes, beaches (just the sand part), the new zip line activity, biking, strolling, seriously the list could be endless. Hawaii is so much more than just it’s ocean activity parts, so have no fear visiting Hawaii, even if you can’t swim.

The best beaches on Kauai

2012-04-29 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 17s

Kauai, the oldest island within Hawaii’s chain, is known for its relaxed, quiet, and relatively unpopulated beaches.  Fifty miles of white sand adorn this garden isle, giving visitors a wide variety to choose from.  But with so many options, and so little time, how do you pick or even prioritize which beach to spend your day at?

We recommend beginning by narrowing down the activities and your preferences for your beach day.  Are you hoping to snorkel?  Do you wish to bring the kids?  Are you looking for calm waters, public restrooms, or generous shade?  Are you renting body boards or surfboards?  All these tidbits play a role in choosing the ideal beach for the day.

Hawaii Island Hopping

2012-04-20 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 20s

When planning a trip to Hawaii, the lure of visiting multiple islands is hard to ignore. Each island in Hawaii is unique, with distinct attractions, activities, and points of interest worth visiting. However, when vacations are limited to time frames, it’s difficult to narrow down your vacation priorities. So how can you best utilize your time if you indeed choose to island hop?

We recommend a minimum of three days per island. If your vacation is a 10-day trip, you can feasibly jump to three different islands, spending three full days on each. Keep in mind however, that any day of traveling may set you back, as airports and flying tend to be exhausting, even if the flight IS only 20 minutes. That being said, if you can plan your hops either in the morning or the evening, this will give you a full afternoon to squeeze in everything you can on each island, even IF it is a travel day!

Hawaii is for relaxation & exploration

Do you come to Hawaii to simply relax or to be active and explore? Our most recent question asked to Hawaii enthusiasts, we received feedback that may surprise those who consider Hawaii the ultimate place for kick back time. Although the islands do provide visitors with copious amounts of lounge chairs, rattan couches, warm sand, and poolside bars, most people who travel to Hawaii are looking to get more out of their time than just a good tan.

How important is the view from your hotel room in Hawaii ?

2012-04-06 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)
Length: 18s

When on vacation, your hotel room acts as your home away from home, or at least, that’s the thought behind hotel accommodations.  It is designed to be comfortable, with obliging staff and luxurious amenities.  Concierge services provide guests with activity plans and day trips, food is available, from continental breakfast to an upscale evening with cocktails.  But it seems as though, often times, we are amazed with the grand entrance, the customer service, even the décor or layout of the hotel.  And once we get up to our room, we open the door and… it looks the same as the last hotel we were in.  We act as though we’re going to get a surprise when we walk through the door of room # 2304 when in fact, hotel rooms tend to be identical in look, just slightly varied with wall paper colors or shampoo scents.

Are Trip Advisor reviews reliable ?

2012-03-16 :: support@hawaii-aloha.com (Bruce Fisher)

The reliability of online websites has always been controversial, especially in the realm of user reviews and advice.  TripAdvisor, one of the leading online review sites for hotels, resorts, flights, vacation rentals, travel packages, etc. has been up for question for a few years now.

Like most other online review sites, it’s an easy process to become a member and write a review.  However, those that are interested enough to become a member and write a review are likely to publish a handful of reviews, not just one.  This is where TripAdvisor users seem to be manipulating the system.

Whats's with the crazy Hawaii weather?

If you’ve been following the weather reports, then you’ve probably heard that Hawaii has been pretty socked in by rain.  There have been some incredible thunder and lightning storms, not to mention electrical storms, high winds, and heavy rain throughout Hawaii’s islands.  But should this display of wet weather steer you away from having a great vacation in Hawaii?  Absolutely not.  Visitors need to remember why Hawaii is as desirable of a location as its name implies.  Tropical rainforests, lush scenery, verdant hillsides, all this green beauty comes from someplace… it comes from the rainfall, particularly the amount of it.
