LTG on Chai FM ]|[ "The conclusion of the trilogy" : LTG Episode 128

2013-06-12 :: noreply@blogger.com (Jan Vermeulen)

What was yet another instalment of Let's Talk Geek that ended up without a podcast also turned out to be our last episode broadcast from the Chai FM studios.

The poor Mixer's laptop just couldn't handle the video stream, which in turn distorted the recording. We extract the sound from the video recording for the audio podcast, so that means there won't be an audio-only version either.

For those who tune in to our live broadcast of the podcast recording, we hope you enjoyed our brief stint of professionalism and punctuality ^ ^. (Using manga-inspired emoticons in a blog post... tsk, very unprofessional.)

Time between radio shows is actually very little, so trying to get our mobile video streaming rig (laptop + webcams on makeshift stands) up and running in the radio studio within the small window we had just wasn't happening.

It should be possible to solve the problem with a notebook PC that has all the features we need, but it would mean having to spend a big chunk of money on new hardware that can handle our streaming software and the 4 USB cameras we'd like to use.

That's a chunk of money we just don't have at this time, so for now we're returning Let's Talk Geek to the studio at House 4 Hack and will bring you all the geeky goodness you've come to expect as you've come to expect it.…

LTG on Chai FM ][ "The sequel" : LTG Episode 127

2013-06-12 :: noreply@blogger.com (Jan Vermeulen)

As is wont to happen when trying something new, we had a mishap. This one involved the laptop we used for the video streaming and recording which means there's no podcast for this episode, unfortunately.

We extract the sound from the video recording for the audio podcast, which means that no video == no audio :sadface:

As a consolation, I offer this relevant animated gif to show that even the emotionless data can be brought to fury by Windows. Provided he's possessed by the consciousness of another being, of course.…

In Episode 126In our first official live show on Chai FM we cover self healing chips, a world without the Internet, how NASA modded an Android phone for use in space, Transistor (a new game from the makers of Bastion) and a gel that stops bleeding instantly. We also argue about whether Google is stealing web traffic away from websites and you get to meet "The Mixer" - on the show, in person, for the first time! We also say goodbye to Gerrit who is abandoning us for the distant shores of Cape Town. We play you out to some awesome tunes from the original Bastion soundtrack. Thanks for watching!

How do you use a 2Gbps broadband connection? : LTG Episode 129

2013-06-12 :: noreply@blogger.com (Jan Vermeulen)

The StuffDirect download audio MP3 of LTG episode 129: "How do you use a 2Gbps broadband connection?"In Episode 129Thanks to the hospitality of Chai FM, we were able to broadcast Let's Talk Geek from a genuine radio studio for a few shows. We hope you enjoyed the brief stint of professionalism and punctuality. Unfortunately we noticed that the quality of our video stream was slipping and that we were letting down our regular live viewership. It should be possible to solve the problem of getting video streaming going on a laptop with 3-8 minutes of in-studio setup time, but it would mean having to spend a big chunk of money on new hardware that can handle our streaming software and the 4 USB cameras we'd like to use. That's a chunk of money we just don't have at this time. So we're back to broadcasting from our own studio, which is graciously hosted by House 4 Hack in Centurion, South Africa. In this show we talk about the crazy lengths fraudsters go to in South Africa to hack into your bank account, and Jan asks some questions of the viewers/listeners and co-hosts:
How do you use a 2Gbps broadband connection? Or more specifically: how do you get 2Gbps throughput to your computer or mobile device?Which content services available overseas (such as the Amazon App Store, Netflix, Hulu+) would you use if it came to SA?RandomIodine-129 (129I) is long-lived radioisotope of iodine which occurs naturally, but also is of special interest in the monitoring and effects of man-made nuclear fission decay products, where it serves as both tracer and potential radiological contaminant. It has a half-life of 15.7 million years. (Thank you, Wikipedia)

In number theory, Euler's totient or phi function, φ(n) is an arithmetic function that counts the number of positive integers less than or equal to n that are relatively prime to n. That is, if n is a positive integer, then φ(n) is the number of integers k in the range 1 ≤ k ≤ n for which gcd(n, k) = 1.
In number theory, a perfect totient number is an integer that is equal to the sum of its iterated totients.

The number 111 is sometimes called "a Nelson" after Admiral Nelson, who allegedly only had "One Eye, One Arm, One Leg" near the end of his life. (Which is in fact incorrect - Nelson never lost a leg.)

It is particularly known as a score in cricket. A score of 111 or multiples thereof (222 = "double nelson", 333 = "triple nelson" and so on) is considered unlucky by some in English cricket: most famously by the international umpire David Shepherd, who had a whole retinue of peculiar mannerisms - hops, shuffles, jiggles and so on - that he would indulge in if the score was ever a "Nelson" multiple. Particularly if the number of wickets also matched - 111/1, 222/2 etc.

Squash bee

The name squash bee is applied to two related genera of bees in the tribe Eucerini; Peponapis and Xenoglossa. Both genera are oligoleges (pollen specialists) on the plant genus Cucurbita and closely related plants (squash, cucumbers, etc.). They are small genera, containing only 13 and seven described species, respectively, and their combined range is nearly identical to the range of Cucurbita in the New World, from South America to North America. Their range has become somewhat expanded along with the movement of cucurbits into other areas (as crop plants). These bees bees are of moderate size, equal to various bumblebees. The pollen-carrying hairs on their legs (the scopa) are unbranched or nearly so, and sparse, to accommodate the exceptionally large, coarse pollen of the host plants. They have also evolved a matinal daily activity cycle, flying before sunrise. Some Xenoglossa species have become morphologically specialized to fly while it is still dark, with greatly enlarged ocelli to allow them to fly in near-darkness.

According to Wikipedia: DC Comics super-hero team the Justice Society of America uses a time-ray to travel from 1942 to 2442, in an attempt to get a Bomb Defense Formula which can produce a bomb-proof shield to protect America from bombing raids, feeling it will be perfected by then. It is shown by now humanity has colonised other planets.

In the traditional Korean calendar the year 109 is 2442.

Power-Ups will allow players to defend themselves, or go on the offensive and both trick and cripple their opponents, while also providing faster and more powerful projectiles to destroy whomever dares to chaleange them.

We already had a random number fact last week that was unrelated to the show title...

In the traditional Korean calendar the year 109 is 2442.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corona_discharge

In electricity, a corona discharge is an electrical discharge brought on by the ionization of afluid surrounding a conductor that is electrically energized. The discharge will occur when the strength (potential gradient) of the electric field around the conductor is high enough to form a conductive region, but not high enough to cause electrical breakdown or arcing to nearby objects. It is often seen as a bluish (or other color) glow in the air adjacent to pointed metal conductors carrying high voltages. Spontaneous corona discharges are undesirable where they waste power in high-voltage systems or where the high chemical activity in a corona discharge creates objectionable or hazardous compounds, such as ozone. Controlled corona discharges are used in a variety of filtration, printing and other processes.
