Originally scheduled to come on the show to talk about our favorite tv shows, we welcome university journalism & writing professor Meredith O'Brien to also discuss the challenge many of us had determining what was, and was not, the truth.

We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support we've received from our listeners, and are confident our city will remain "Boston Strong."

How Does She Do It?

Then we see exactly why Manasi loves her work when we take questions about skin care from listeners. Note: This podcast was recorded on location at the kitchen table so the audio quality is not studio-style.

If we're to believe what they tell us on airplanes, we should always put on our own oxygen mask before helping others. Yet in life, how often do we actually do this? This week we're talking about the things we take for granted, the ways in which little changes on the home front can wreak havoc on a finely tuned schedule and who eats first: the parent or the kids?

Length: 1s

This past week Kristin gave a talk at her alma mater in which she discussed the joys and pitfalls of putting her personal life online. So we're talking about some of the lessons we've learned in the process of podcasting after all these years and nearly 300 episodes. It matters not whether we're cranky or sunny, honest or veiled, or blissfully unaware about most things, some will agree and some will not. And as we often preach to our kids, at the end of the day, that's what makes the world go 'round.

2012-02-12
Length: 58s

This week we're gabbing about our troops and teams and the constant struggle between wanting to do our best and settling for just good enough. When mom's got a million things on her plate, how can she possibly be expected to sew dresses for Daisy's International Day or coach her Odyssey of the Mind Team so they know how to elevate a raisin using a piece of spaghetti and a straw in seven minutes flat. We also wonder why--despite an absolutely amazing voice--we never really liked any Whitney Houston songs. May she rest in peace.

Research shows that kids are spending half as much time outside as they did 20 years ago – and much more time doing "inside" activities (sound familiar)?  Other studies  show that offering sufficient outdoor time improves the overall health of our children while lengthening attention spans, diminishing aggressiveness, improving test scores and ultimately advancing learning (plus other benefits). (Thanks to the National Wildlife Federation for the fun facts). This week, Jaime Matyas from the National Wildlife Federation joins us to introduce the NWF's new Be Out There Campaign, which aims to educate tens of million of U.S. moms and dads on the importance of helping their kids have more time outdoors and providing tools to do so.

Would you let your child take the subway alone? How about wait for the bus, walk to a neighbor or ride around the 'hood on his or her bicycle? As parents of growing boys, the Manic Mommies are trying to figure when, and how, to let our kids explore their independence. Which is why we were so excited to welcome Lenore Skenazy, author of "Free-Range Kids", who was vilified in the press for allowing her 9-year old son to ride the subway by himself. Don't get too jealous ladies, right after she hung up with James, Erin was back to shuttling kids around, grocery shopping and preparing for a couple days on the road. Who says she doesn't live the glamorous life?
