Justin Vacula and Rodney Collins discuss three distinct yet overlapping common themes -- 'respecting beliefs,' 'right to opinion,' and 'claiming offense' -- that often arise in discussions when cherished beliefs are questioned or challenged. What do the phrases 'respecting beliefs' and 'right to opinion' mean? Are these claims intellectually honest 'moves' in a discussion that might get heated even though persons challenging beliefs are being gentle and respectful as Bible verse 1 Peter 3:15 calls for? What does it mean to morally and justifiably claim offense? Instead of 'throwing up smokescreens' in discussions, Vacula and Collins argue, people should value disagreement and not construe it as disrespect...or at least be honest and just say they don't want to talk instead of seemingly making excuses to avoid discussion (especially when they started it).…
