Artist Spotlight - Dawn McClain

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Dawn McClain has emerged from the same rich soil of so many other great African American singers. Like so many powerhouses and trailblazers in music, Dawn began singing in the church at a very early age. An 80's baby with a splash of 60's and 70's influence, and a sprinkle of gospel roots, she blends and bridges the generation gap between these eras in music, melodically suspending time. Ms. McClain is a Veteran of the United States Air Force, and a natural humanitarian and advocate for women’s health and cancer awareness. Dawn was diagnosed in 2010 with ovarian cancer. Never one to faultier she embraced cancer with GOD’s grace and has been in remission now for four years. Dawn McClain calls the show she gives “The Experience”, because it is just “that” an Experience. If you ask her, how she would like to live out the rest of her days… She would say, “Performing”. There is nothing that she loves more than the opportunity to interact with her supporters. In “The Experience”, she gives you all the passion her heart can give, by filling the room with and bathing the crowd in the essence of song. Music with passion and force, sensuality and jazz, bluesy rock-steady R&B, funk and futuristic soul...that is, “classic soul groove gumbo”. Your ears will be tantalized with the vocal influences of her mentors, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Rachelle Ferrell, Jill Scott, and Ledisi. Ms. McClain’s career thus far has been a journey filled with “rare” opportunity for a independent artist. She calls it a blessing and God’s grace, that her projects (“The Love Project”, “Dance Chronicles”, and her most resent release “Life is Beautiful” ) were touched with production and co-writing collaborations, from some of the industry’s most sought after Grammy nominated writers and producers. She has graced the stage and performed with Industry legends such as Roberta Flack, Jeane Carne, Ann Nesby, Kem, Gordon Chambers, Tony Terry, Mint Condition, K-Ci & Jo-Jo, Stevie Wonder, N' Dambi Blu, Liv Warfield, Lela James, Erykah Badu, Donnie, Frank McComb, Johnny Gill, Malcom Jamal Warner, and Chrisette Michele. She has been featured on Good Day Atlanta, V-103’s “Art and Jazz”, 102.5's “Art & Soul” Summer Music Series, Centennial Olympic Park's “Wind down Wednesdays, Amateur Night at the Apollo (and won), and the highly acclaimed Michael Baisden Show. Her latest project Life Is Beautiful features “Cant Call It Love”. The heartfelt ballad, produced by Grammy award winning producer Dave "Jam" Hall, finds Ms. McClain showcasing her vocal prowess as she sings about a woman who is in a no strings, sexual relationship with a married man. “OOO, Not the way my momma raised me/ or what my father'd be proud of/ got caught up in my own fantasy/ and I can't even call it love/ it just feels good/ I can't even call it love/ but I want it /I can't even call it love/ cause I need it" she belts. When asked what was her inspiration for the record she states, " I wanted to write something controversial, something no other female performer/writer in this day and age was brave enough to write about. "Can't Call it Love" is about a woman who is with this man just for sex. She knows it's wrong, she knows what's at stake, but she doesn't care. Although I don't agree with creating any type of sexual relationship with a married man, I believe a lot of women have found themselves in this type of situation. I have friends who do this, I've listened to them explain to me why they would take such risks, and "Can't Call it Love" is my translation of how I think they feel." Ms. McClain is currently doing dates, her next scheduled show “An Evening With Dawn McClain featuring Mista P Jones” is on December 6th at the JunkYard Bar & Grill in Houston, Texas. She is also working on new music and collaborating with other artist on their projects. When asked about working with Dawn McClain, Kathy Liautaud of KLPR Group stated, “Dawn McClain is a passionate, fearless, resilient artist that didn’t allow her adversaries to hinder her goals, she used it as fuel and inspiration to accomplish them. She is multi talented and a breath of fresh air to the industry; she doesn't compromise herself to follow the popular trend. We are honored to have her on our roster”. Dawn McClain is a brilliant, gifted and stellar talent on the rise and is destined to reach super star status and become a household name.…

Artist Spotlight - N-Pire Da Great

Length: 17m 28s

Welcome to another edition of Po Politickin. In this episode, we politick with N-Pire Da Great. Hailing from Sacramento, California, N-Pire Da Great was born Nashua Hamilton during the era of the growing Crypts and Bloods gang wars, but also during burgeoning new music genre called hip-hop/rap. Raised in a single-father household due to the incarceration of his mother for most of his life, N-Pire’s ears were opened to the emerging music form through the sounds of Run-DMC and LL Cool J, but the sounds of 90s hip-hop heavyweights Nas, Tupac, Mobb Deep, and Tribe Called Quest is what furthered progressed his ear. However, it wasn’t until high school when he began to take the art form seriously as a career. Local labels were courting the teen emcee, and when N-Pire was 21, even more validation came in the form of props from rap veteran Kurupt. “I was in a studio in L.A recording a song with a producer I was working with at the time, and Kurupt walked in. I had actually stepped out of the studio to smoke and came back in and I could hear him say ‘Yo, who’s this rapping? Who’s he signed to?’ And when I actually walked in and they pointed to me, I felt like, real small standing next to him. He was just like ‘Yo, you need to keep rockin, this is ill!’ He wanted to sign me at the time, but it didn’t work out. But we still keep in contact to this day.” Nothing like a co-sign from a legend! And from then, it was on! After college, the N-Pire was producing for the likes of fellow Sacramentan emcee Brotha Lynch Hung, Main Attrakionz, Willie the Kid, Freeway, Kurupt, and The Federation. Two mixtapes also followed, 2011’s Everybody Hates Nash and 2013’s Road 2 LND, which acts a prequel to his forthcoming LP Legends Never Die. If you think you’ll get a one-track rapper with N-Pire, think again. He calls his music “reality rap,” offering different perspectives in regards to society’s problems, even offering solutions, like on songs “The One,” “11-9,” and “Silence.” But N-Pire can party with the rest of them on records such as “G-Shit” and “Get Active.” For those who claim that hip-hop is dead, wait until July 16, 2013 to witness how N-Pire Da Great is keeping great hip-hop music alive with his debut LP Legends Never Die. …

Artist Spotlight - Verbiage

Length: 36m 0s

Welcome to another edition of Po Politickin. In this episode, we politick with Maryland producer/emcee Verbiage. Artist Bio - When passion calls, you better answer. After several setbacks, emcee-producer Verbiage’s passion for music is driving him forward. The Maryland double-threat is a rap artist, but his classical training in piano since the age of five one-ups your standard rapper/producer with his understanding of written music and instrumentation. It wasn’t until his freshman year in high school where he got the rapping bug; not serious at first, but interactions with budding producers ignited a flame to create his own musical productions. Losing his mother at age fifteen was just one of many challenges that Verb had to overcome, but he kept plugging away with his musical creations, one of them landing on the projects of J Hood, Young Buck, Rich Boy and Yukmouth. Those projects were shelved, but despite the circumstances that delayed notable production placements for national artists, that seed of musical passion never strayed. They don’t call him Verbiage for nothing. Succumbing to adult responsibilities with a day job, Verb fed that seed by flipping the script on his creative process in late 2011, and began working on his self-produced debut mixtape My Life in Syntax in early 2012, a project full of Jay-Z instrumentals to showcase his lyrical wizardry. His current five-track EP Inflection Point is the second project to be birthed from a different palace; instead of using his productions, he used production from another (Anom the Phenom) on the first four tracks, deleted negative energy from the past, and wrote all rhymes. Kendrick Lamar, Big K.R.I.T., Kanye West, Nas, and J. Cole are among his influences, and can be heard in the EP. The title is a mathematical term that, in itself, means significant change; that change being his investment of the time to focus on himself, his passions, his vision, and his future with improved allusions and quality of writing. The set is just a taste of Verb’s versatile sound; “League of My Own” is an epic introduction while “Future Trap” showcases Verbiage’s gritty commercial potential. …

Welcome to another edition of Po Politickin. In this episode, we politick New Orleans rapper Shorty. Artist Bio - Nearly a decade into a promising musical career, Shorty is looking forward to longevity and many more years in the music industry. With big dreams and even bigger talent, this Uptown New Orleans native is poised to take the urban music scene by storm. Shorty has an energy and stage presence that is unrivaled in this day and age. Shorty’s not your average, cookie cutter artist. Instead, Shorty is looking to brand his image while touching his listener’s lives through his art. Shorty started his musical career in church and his high school band, where he realized he had a gift that included the gift of songwriting skills and the ability to play various instruments. He admires everything about music and he loves recording, so it is only natural that he share his gifts with the world through his craft. Hoping to soar along the same horizons as his musical influences, Young Jeezy, T.I., Lil Wayne, Stevie Wonder, The Dream, Ludacris and Fabulous, Shorty is currently promoting his hit single, “Tipsy”, throughout the Southern Region. Shorty is a determined young man with quite lofty goals. It is only a matter of time before Shorty’s career takes him to the next level. Be on the lookout for him.…
