Episode 22 – Mid-March ’15 Huddle

2015-03-17

The huddle is a monthly format where David and I talk about absolutely whatever we want in the world of music. It’s different every time, and we have no idea how it’s going to turn out. Key areas of this episode: -Bands we wish would grace the festival circuit -Austin Psych Fest | Levitation -Blur -Incubus’ surprisingly solid new single “Trust Fall” -Why Pandora blows/is evil…

Mini Episode 9 - A Husband/Wife Review of Cold War Kids' Houston Date

2015-03-11

On March 5th my wife and I went to House of Blues to see Cold War Kids. This is her debut on my podcast and what we thought of the main attraction and opening acts like Elliot Moss. These episodes are ad hoc, no frills and have little editing. Enjoy. N.B.: I said during the episode that Elliot Moss had no Wikipedia page. Upon re-checking, he does, it's just shoddily written and is flagged for all sorts of community violations. Available on iTunes and Podomatic.…

Episode 21 - The Return of Devin Finch

2015-03-10

Devin makes another appearance on my show to put a controversial spin on topics like Free Press Summer Fest, R. Kelly and more. If you are easily offended, you may want to avoid this one. Also, that is not an apology, just a warning.…

EPISODE 20 - Brian Arthur of Super Happy Fun Land and SXSW Overflow Fest

2015-03-03

overflowsxwEvery year since I've lived in Houston, Brian Arthur has organized the SXSW Overflow Fest at Super Happy Fun Land. It is a holy day (well, fortnight) of obligation for music-loving Houstonians, especially those of us who have a real thirst for experimental, DIY or downright weird artists. Bands willing to trek to Houston after their SXSW showcases in Austin will be treated to a fantastic stage to play on with great sound, the option to shower/crash and delicious, delicious vegetarian chili. Brian is probably still checking his email for submissions, so if you are interested in playing, or buying a two-week pass, drop him a line. This year, it will be held from March 12th to the 25th. Each day, festivities will start at a different time depending on the lineup. Doors are 8 dollars each night and a two-week pass gives you a considerable discount. Check the website for more details. On this episode, we talk about the history of the venue, the history of the festival and what newcomers can expect this year. Available on iTunes and Podomatic. Thank you so much, Brian and Olivia. Houston is lucky to have you do nice things like this.…

Episode 19 - Deathrock is Alive: RFTH Hoists the Transylvanian Flag

2015-02-24

This week, I sat down with VidVad Scare (frontman of deathrock/post-punk/goth band Transylvanian Flag) at a Starbucks in Spring, Texas, which is somewhere between The Woodlands and where I live now. It's a little noisy, as usual, but I recently purchased a Tascam 8-track with two XLR inputs, so I can use actual external mics and be on battery power. This will be at my front door in the next day or two and should make future shows sound a lot better. Keep your fingers crossed for me.…

Episode 18: RANT - Trust Fund Kiddos

2015-02-17
Length: 34m 16s

Art by people who have no life experience is a tepid, boring thing in my opinion. It's doubly annoying when people with no life experience support Occupy and live a supposedly bohemian, marxist lifestyle with the passion of Frida Kahlo all the while pocketing crisp, green care packages from mommy and daddy. We have a lot of little silver spoon Michelangos here in Houston, and they annoy me. Here is a rant on that.…

Episode 17 - The Resurrection of Marilyn Manson

2015-02-09

David joins me for the first time in more than a month and we talk a mix of local and non-local releases. We spend a lot of time on Marilyn Manson who actually put out a decent record this month, even though he still can't write lyrics to save his life.…

Episode 16 - A Chat with the Creators of Friday I'm in Love

2015-02-03

Jeremy Barber and Marcus Pontello talked to me last Friday about their ambitious Numbers documentary, "Friday I'm in Love" and the importance of the nightclub in the history of Houston. In its more than three-decade lifespan, Numbers has served as a roller rink, a gay discotheque, and continues on today as a goth and industrial-themed dance club/concert venue. Here are some (not even all) highlights of the venue's concert history. The Cure, The Cult, Grace Jones, and Iggy Pop are just a smattering. …

Episode 15 - ZZ Top and Squats with Craig Hlavaty

2015-01-27

I am honored to present to you an episode I did with Craig Hlavaty: lumbersexual, ball-busting libertarian, friend of the Czar of Texas Talk Radio (Michael Berry), local press member and a guy that Billy Gibbons sees around town. I hope to do a part two, just like I will with Devin Finch.…

Episode 13 - Metal Mentorship from Evan Jones of Sleep Envy

2015-01-13

Sleep Envy play some metallically influenced music I can actually dig. The day before their Fitzgerald's debut show, I caught up with bassist and vocalist Evan Jones to talk about metal in the rain, on Westheimer. Available on iTunes and Podomatic.…

Devin is a triple threat: A visual artist, a musician and even a standup comedian. He also designs moon bounces and is an undeniably important part of the Houston art/music landscape. Available on iTunes and Podomatic. …
