SERMON NOTES

Text: John 18:28-34                                                                                                                                                    Date 4-5-2015

What Shall I Do With Jesus Who Is Called the Christ?

In Matthew 27, Pontius Pilate  is trying the case of Jesus and at one point in the trial he asks the question…”What shall I do with Jesus who is called the Christ?

This is a question that mankind has been asking ever since.

1.    The empty tomb on the third day is a historical fact.

2.    Who rolled away the stone?

3.    Did it happen by natural or supernatural means?

4.    Who rolled away the stone?  Man  or  God?

Key verse:

Matthew 27:22; New American Standard Bible (NASB)

22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Crucify Him!”

*A question to ponder this week:

Where are you on your spiritual journey with God?

Why Did Jesus Cry on Palm Sunday?

In Luke 19, as Jesus was coming into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, He wept over the city.  Why did He do this?

Jesus came to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and cried for a city, people, and  religious system that walked away from God!The fig tree represents God’s judgment of a corrupt system.

The whole thing is a mess so God comes in human flesh to judge it and to replace it with the work of His Son on the cross!

After Good Friday:

3.     The Cross becomes the place of people dealing with their sin and not the temple!

4.     The Cross becomes the place where people find forgiveness from God ….not the temple.

5.     The Cross becomes the place where people are accepted, justified, redeemed, and embraced by God.

Key verse:

Luke 19:41;  New American Standard Bible (NASB)

41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,

*A question to ponder this week:

When was the last time you were heartbroken for the lost?

The Cost of Discipleship

March 15, 2015

I.              What does it mean to follow Jesus?

II.           The Roman Legionaire

-       turn your back on your family

-       cannot get married

-       Minimum age is 16

-       Shortest term of service is 20 years

-       They do not want homesick soldiers

-       They lay their lives on the line

-       Reason for effectiveness: Commitment & Discipline

-       What Jesus asks: total commitment

III.         The Tower

-       When you plant a vineyard, you build a tower

-       Like  a mini- fortress

-       Not finishing the tower means having the wrong priorities

IV.        The War

-       Terms of peace  = terms of surrender

-       The victor of war demands absolute surrender

-       Surrender means offering tribute

-       Surrender means giving up all your rights

V.           The Disciples

-       Fully understood the cost of discipleship

-       They were ALL IN 100%

-       The call to discipleship is a call to battle

-       Huge crowds followed Jesus for the wrong reasons

-       If you follow Jesus for the wrong reasons, you will end up surrendering to the enemy:  defeated, discouraged, disillusioned, demoralized

VI.        Problem

-       It’s about me

-       Obedience is optional

-       Priority is my schedule

VII.      The Punch line

-       Salt losing saltiness is an oxymoron. A contradiction in terms

-       A follower of Jesus who is not following Jesus is an oxymoron

“The fastest way for evil to triumph is to have a lot of good people do nothing.”

Ingredients of Christian Joy

In the fourth chapter of the book of Philippians, Paul gives 4 ingredients that are essential for Christian joy.

We need Know and focus on the truth that the  Lord  is near!We need to be prayerful    instead of anxious!

a.     The answer to anxiety is prayer. Talk  to God!

b.     We either worry or we  worship!

c.     Worship is  connecting with God!

3.     We need to be pouring in some thankfulness to God.

4.     We need to control our thoughts:

a.     Put your mind on the right things.

b.     Put your mind on truth.

Key verse:

Philippians 4:4-7(NIV)

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

TEXT: Phil 3:17-21

The Book of Philippians:

Citizens of Another World

In the third chapter of the book of Philippians, Paul reminds the believers in Philippi that:

Our Christian “commonwealth” is in    heaven.

Our earthy identity must at best be secondary because our true citizenship is in heaven!

As Paul was in prison in Rome he was encouraged by the promise that we all will be given resurrected bodies like Jesus.

**Some of His disciples didn’t recognize Him at first because His body wasn’t the

same in that it was perfect.

What was Jesus’ resurrected body like?

The resurrected body could…..

Be touched.  (Jn. 20:11-17)It could eat.  (Lk. 24:36-43)It could go through walls.  (Jn. 20:26)It could    fly.  (Acts 1:9).

**These new bodies/models will be free from sickness, disease or death.

Key verse:  Philippians 3:20-21 New International Version (NIV)

20But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

The Book of Philippians:

Jesus Only

Philippians 3:1-4

In the third chapter of the book of Philippians, Paul refers back to spiritual truths solidified by the Early Church in Acts chapter 15:

They/we don’t need to  observe the laws of Moses to be saved.They/we are all saved by grace through faith in Lord Jesus Christ!

As Paul was traveling around the Roman world telling people about Jesus, certain people were coming behind him and messing with the minds of the churches that he had just planted.

These Judaizers, “legalizers”, were telling people that:

1.     Paul was....just an evangelist with some knowledge about Jesus….but his knowledge and message is lacking!

2.     His message is not 100% right.

3.     They need to become Jewish!

4.     They need to obey the laws of Moses!

Paul cautions the church in Philippi about these people and shares the following with them in Philippians 3:

1.     There is no advantage of spiritual righteousness before God in being Jewish.

2.     It’s not being Jewish that saves you it is Jesus and your faith in Him!

Key verse:

Philippians 3:8-9, New International Version (NIV)

8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.

*A question to ponder in your growth group this week:

Can you remember a time when someone tried to add religious works to your salvation in Christ?

The Book of Philippians:

Brother, Co-worker, Soldier

The book of Philippians, an amazing book found in the New Testament, is filled with characters that possess courageous faith for God.  In Chapter two, we find the amazing teaching that Jesus emptied himself and came to earth as a servant.

When Jesus emptied himself and came in the form of a servant was He disguising who God is or was he revealing who God is?Jesus did not come as a servant in spite of the fact that He is God. He came precisely because of the fact that He is God!God is a giver! At the heart of God is the desire to give, forgive and to serve!

Notice how Paul, in chapter 2, describes another person of courageous faith-- Epaphroditus.  He is described as:

My brother!   He is a believer and a part of the family. He is a co-worker. This person isn't just saved by Jesus, he is involved in a ministry work!He is a fellow soldier exposing himself to risks and dangers for Christ’s work.

Key verse:

Philippians 2:25 (New International Version, NIV)

But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.

2015-02-01 :: Sunday Morning Audio

The Book of Philippians:

Who Are We Courageous For?

The book of Philippians, an amazing book found in the New Testament, is filled with characters that possess courageous faith for God.  In this letter, the Apostle Paul is in prison for telling people about Jesus.  As his life hangs in the balance, he, in chapter two, describes the One that he is in prison for….Jesus.

Who is Jesus?

1.     He is GOD.

2.     He emptied himself of His divine attributes/superpowers when He became a man.

How did Jesus do all the miracles?

3.     God the Father did the miracles through Him! (Jn 14:10-11).

As a man in human flesh, Jesus experienced all the limitations of a man

4.     He got tired.  (Jn 4:6)

5.     He got hungry.  (Mt 21:18)

6.     He got sleepy.  (Mt 8:23-24)

7.     He experienced human physical development.  (Lk 2:51-52)

Who did Jesus leave heaven for?

Who did Jesus empty Himself for?

Who did Jesus humble Himself for on the cross?

Who did He die on the cross for?

YOU!

This is the One we are courageous for!!

Key verse:

Philippians 2:5-8New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,  but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.  Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

*A question to ponder in your growth group this week:

When we see the sacrifice that Jesus made for us--on our behalf, how should that make us feel?  How does it make you feel?

The book of Philippians:

Courage for the Message

The book of Philippians, an amazing book found in the New Testament, is filled with characters that possess courageous faith in a world hostile to the followers of Jesus. In chapter 1, Paul is in prison for preaching the Message, and the church is questioning what God is doing. They are concerned for Paul's life, but he encourages them to look up and see the bigger - more eternal - picture.

Because of Paul's Imprisonment:

1. Soldiers are hearing the good news of the Messiah.

2. Paul's situation has fired up other Christians to be more courageous for their faith and for evangelism.

3. Even Paul's envious Christian brothers in Rome who saw him as a threat to their position in the church, stepped out in boldness for the Gospel.

4. Even in seemingly tragic situations, God is at work!

Whose will is it for Paul to be in Rome - in Prison?

God's! (Acts 23:11)

Key verse: Philippians 1:21 (NIV) "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain."

A question to ponder for your small group this week:

Can you think of a circumstance in your life where you thought God was not paying attention - only to see Him later working in amazing ways within that circumstance?
