Episode 141: From the Archives - Juneyt

2013-06-17 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

With a few people out on vacation and Jon busy doing a live gig this week, we didn’t have a chance to put together a new show. Instead, we’re re-releasing an old favourite. We’ll be back with brand new content next week. Enjoy!

Original Show Notes:
On this week’s SlightlySauced, we welcome local artist Juneyt into our studio for an intimate concert and an explanation of all things Flamenco. This man can play guitar like a spanish Robert Johnson, and he plays it for us! This might just be our best episode yet, so be sure to tune in!

Episode 140: Fuck

2013-06-10 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

On this week’s SlightlySauced, we talk about Jon’s propensity for swearing. Simply put, he swears too much, and people think that he’s an idiot because of it. We discuss an article written by a woman who has the same problem, amplified by the fact that she also has three small children that are starting to learn from her bad language. We’ve also got an email from Ernie, and talk briefly about the litany of scandals facing the federal Conservative Party of Canada.

Episode 139: I Dunno

2013-06-03 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

This week’s SlightlySauced is a short one. We sat down with the intention of recording a show, but had to dick with our recording rig for an hour before it decided to do what we asked of it. When we finally got underway, we decided to just go through some listener email and call it a night. If this is your first time listening, just don`t. Trust us.

Episode 138: The Death of Traditional Journalism

2013-05-27 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

On this week’s SlightlySauced, we discuss the state of traditional journalism. After recent allegations that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was filmed mingling with some disreputable gentlemen, some news outlets are accusing the Toronto Star of shoddy journalism, saying that it was irresponsible to break the story without proof. Meanwhile, we wonder if other news outlets are any better than the Star. Has the time of the traditional news room passed? Is social media to blame? 24 hour news cycles? Are business needs being put before the journalists’ responsibility to their readers? Find out on this week’s SlightlySauced.

Episode 137: Amy's Baking Company

2013-05-20 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

On this week’s SlightlySauced, our skeleton crew talks about a recent episode of Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares that went viral shortly after its release. Amy’s Baking Company is a small restaurant somewhere in Arizona whose owners made the mistake of showing their true colours on national television. These folks are all kinds of crazy, and we were stunned to watch them experience a near total meltdown in the space of 40 minutes.

On this week’s SlightlySauced, we hear all about Tyler’s recent trip to San Fransisco and Dana’s recent trip to Los Angeles. That’s right, we are some well-travelled motherfuckers. We also get listener email from somebody who isn’t Ernie, Liam, or Dharmesh. It’s very exciting.

Episode 135: The Mars One Project

2013-05-06 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

On this week’s SlightlySauced, we discuss the Mars One Project, a privately funded effort to send a crew of colonists to Mars. The catch? It’s a one-way trip. Sure, there are great opportunities for science and exploration and symbolism, but in order to grasp them, crew members have to give up everything and everyone that they’ve ever known and trust their lives to each other and the project. Would you sign up? Would we? Listen in to find out.

Episode 134: From the Archives - Bullet Control

2013-04-28 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

Everything went really wrong this week and we just couldn’t get a show together. As consolation, we’re re-releasing Episode 80: Bullet Control. It’s a great discussion about whether or not we should enact stronger gun control legislation, and features a friend of ours who happens to be a gun collector. We’ll be back next week with brand new content. Enjoy!

Original Show Notes:
On this week’s SlightlySauced, we talk about guns. Big guns, small guns, machine guns, and handguns. Our discussion covers gun collectors; sport and trophy hunting; whether or not guns and ammunition should be regulated, and if so, how. All that, some listener email and a voicemail message. It’s a great show!

This week’s SlightlySauced covers a wide range of fascinating topics! No seriously, we started reading listener email and got so deep into tangential conversation that we never actually got started with the article that we had intended to share. Nevertheless, we covered a lot of funny and interesting ground, so grab a beer and give us a listen.

Episode 132: We drink. We swear. We don’t f—ing smoke

2013-04-15 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

On this week’s SlightlySauced, we discuss the contentious hiring policies of an Ottawa-based software development firm. Momentous Corp. refuses to hire smokers, and the Canadian media is sliding down a slippery slope demanding to know what group will be targeted next. Does the company have the right to refuse to hire people based on traits and habits that are non-essential to the work at hand? If so, could they also fire people based on those traits? Are smokers a protected class in Canada? All this and more, when we get SlightlySauced.

Episode 130: The Gamblers' Fallacy

2013-03-31 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

This week on SlightlySauced, we talk about casinos. Lately, it seems as though the Ontario provincial government has a thing for building gambling houses, and we figure that it may have something to do with the fact that they’re broke. Does Waterloo Region need a casino? Will it attract people who aren’t currently travelling to Elora or Niagara to gamble? What of problem gambling and the supposed rash of broken homes and ruined lives that it allegedly leaves in its wake? All of this and more when we get SlightlySauced.

Does Waterloo Region need a casino? Will it attract people who aren’t currently travelling to Elora or Niagara to gamble? What of problem gambling and the supposed rash of broken homes and ruined lives that it allegedly leaves in its wake? All of this and more when we get SlightlySauced.

Episode 129: From the Archives - Polygamy for Me and You

2013-03-25 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

This week’s SlightlySauced is a re-run! Don’t worry though, it’s over a year old, so if you’re a new listener, you’ve never heard it before. And if you’re not a new listener, stop complaining, because it’s a great episode.

Original Show Notes:
On this week’s SlightlySauced, Tyler returns to a lively discussion about Polygamy. Is it inherently damaging to society? Should we prevent consenting couples from joining in multiple marriages? And what of the isolated communities of Polygamists throughout Canada and the Western United States?

Episode 124: We Are Not Doctors

2013-02-18 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

On this week’s SlightlySauced, Dana, Jon, Kayla and Steph talk about doctors. Is it weird for a man to receive a prostate exam from a female practitioner? For a woman to have her lady bits examined by a male gynecologist? And while we’re at it, what’s up with STI tests and all of those questions that they ask when you give blood? Finally, we talk about various forms of contraceptives and Kayla offers to mail our listeners free condoms. There’s a thread to the conversation, but just barely. Regardless, it’s an entertaining discussion, so grab a beer and enjoy.

This week’s SlightlySauced is all about alternative funding. We answer some listener email, and then share an article from The Atlantic that makes the case that fund raising sites like KickStarter are democratizing the process of funding a small project or business. Not surprisingly, Dave and Kayla have some issues with this trend, and Jon tends to disagree with them both. It’s a great episode, full of yelling and screaming. On this week’s SlightlySauced, we discover an enterprising business in the Utah Valley that specializes in editing R-rated films to make them acceptable to a Mormon audience… or did, seeing as they’re now out of business. Regardless, we talk about the impact of the idea of customers requesting that their media be censored. Is it still censorship? Or is it something altogether different? How about the sanctity of art? Since then, Kyle has been suffering from near total memory loss and has spent the past 8 years searching for clues about his life. We discuss his situation; ponder what it means to be a somebody in the first place; try to figure out if Kyle was a secret spy, a ninja, or an alien abductee; and think up a few forms of future ID that might stop this from happening again. Next, it’s on to the recent story of doctors that have been able to communicate with a man who was thought to be in a vegetative state, followed by a lively debate about eugenics and whether or not it’s morally right to cure genetic diseases before birth. 2012-10-28 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

This week on SlightlySauced, we talk history. Specifically, Canadian history, and whether or not it’s as boring as we remember it being in school. The discussion was prompted by an article in the National Post that put forth the idea of teaching more of the salacious bits of Canadian History in an effort to get people interested enough to actually learn a bit about our past. Is our history as boring as it seems? Should we change the way that we teach it? Is there value in learning about our history at all? All of this and more when we get SlightlySauced.

This week on SlightlySauced, we dig into a New York Times article that claims that some elementary school children are being prescribed psychotropic drugs designed to combat ADHD in order to counteract their natural behaviours and make them better students - even if they don’t have ADHD. Is there a moral dillemna in giving drugs to kids to make them better students? What if it’s the only feasible way to break a cycle of poverty? Episode 105: Not an Abortion Debate

2012-10-08 :: contact@slightlysauced.com (SlightlySauced)

On this week’s episode of SlightlySauced, we do not have an abortion debate. In point of fact, we discuss local Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth’s Motion 312, a private member’s bill that was recently debated by our Parliament.

Had the bill passed, it would have established a working committee to discuss and determine a legal threshold after which a human fetus is considered to be a person, and thus entitled to all of the rights that a normal person enjoys.

Many detractors saw this bill as a back door into opening up the abortion debate. Was it in fact a back door? Should the debate be re-opened? What would happen if we had gone down this path? Grab a beer and find out as we get SlightlySauced.

Can the organization pay its bills on website revenues alone? What kind of reporting would sway us towards starting to pay for local news content? What is the role of a local news service in an internet-connected world? Plus, we answer a few listener emails, including one all the way from Australia!
