Fantastic seaweeds cling to wave battered rocks, and carnivorous sea stars stalk mussels and unsuspecting clams. These areas also serve as a rich natural resource for the four local tribes of Native Americans. Climate change could change all of that. Measuring snow depths on Hurricane Ridge and ocean temperatures in the intertidal zone, scientists share their hopes and concerns for the future of a rugged and incredibly diverse ecosystem.

But it's not just about the indigenous rice seed of India or about the survival of a sustainable agriculture system with the knowledge of over ten thousand years. It's about a global phenomenon taking place where a non-sustainable system systematically destroys a sustainable one, where short term profit has the power to overwhelm common sense and the consciousness of many millions, where progress is not progress but the wanton destruction of an eco-system and environment we will never be able to replace. Natabar Sarangi is just one of a growing number of farmers throughout the world who realize that if we do not begin to repair the damage taking place to our agricultural systems and our environment, we will lose not just our cultural identity but our fundamental right to a truly sustainable system of food security.

TERRA 802: Restoring an Icon

2013-01-18 :: www.lifeonterra.com
Length: 12m 39s

The story has been told again and again: In little more than a decade during the late 1800s, hunters all but wiped out one of the continent’s most iconic animals, the American bison. They killed the animals by the tens of thousands for their hides, meat and simply for the thrill of the hunt. By the beginning of the 20th century, a species of huge ecological and cultural value had vanished from the prairie, surviving only in small, captive herds and a remnant population in Yellowstone National Park. In the late 1800s, two Montana ranchers, Michel Pablo and Charles Allard, spent more than 20 years assembling one of the largest collections of purebred bison on the continent. In 1907, after the U.S. government declined to buy the herd, Pablo made a deal with the Canadian government and shipped most of his bison northward to Elk Island National Park. Now, the ancestors of these bison are returning to their ancestral home in northern Montana. The American Prairie Foundation is working...

Kelsey's identity is directly tied to the various elements of Oregon's biodiversity. She was born in a 1-room cabin in Fall Creek amidst the old-growth trees of the Cascades. She was named after Kelsey Creek - a crystal-clear river that flows out of an ancient forest grove, and Rose signifies the wild rose that grew abundantly near the cabin where she was born. Kelsey knows that she is not old enough to vote, but she has also learned that she can raise her voice by speaking out. Although it shouldn't be the responsibility of her generation to take on the burden of learning how to adapt in the face of global climate change, Kelsey knows that Mother Earth does not have the time to wait for politicians to debate about whether climate change will affect our future.

The principle of inter-generational justice is enshrined in international human rights law ? simply put, it means that the adults can't have a party on the planet and leave it a mess for the kids. Combine the Public Trust Doctrine with the principles of intergenerational justice and passionate youth, who are fighting for their future in the courts and on the streets, and we have the perfect trifecta. Why? Because youth across the country are bringing legal actions - based on trust - against the federal and state governments, so we will open our eyes and protect our atmosphere and our futures with smart strategies rooted in science. In this episode of the TRUST Series, meet Nelson Kanuk, a 17-year old who learned how...

What began in 1912 as a gracious effort to save the Jackson Hole elk herd from harsh winters, shrinking habitat, and dwindling forage, has morphed into a century-long feeding program on what is now the National Elk Refuge and 22 other State-run feed grounds. This biological experiment has created a petri dish for wildlife disease and is now one of the most contentious, fiercely debated issues in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Feeding the Problem is a balanced and in-depth exploration of this unique conservation dilemma from the people most intimately connected to it.

The spirit bear, globally rarer than the panda, only lives on the north coast of British Columbia and gives and inspiring look at the interconnectedness of this coastal ecosystem existing in symbiosis with the indigenous communities there for thousands of years. By following three world renown photographers and the relationships they build with indigenous guides throughout a 10 day photo expedition, viewers experience stunning imagery of the biodiversity that exists when a wild land meets a wild ocean.

What is life? Do we need to define it on order to study its origins? What does it even mean "to define" something? For scientists in more established fields, such as physics or chemistry, these questions are nice to ponder in an armchair by a toasty fire – away from one's research. However, for the emerging field of astrobiology, the search for life in the universe seems to blur the lines between hard science and armchair philosophy. Or does it? In "Spaced Out," chemists and philosophers from Montana State University's astrobiology research group share their perspectives on the issue.

In March 2009, a group of NOAA scientists and marine debris experts gathered on the shores the Potomac River to tackle a problem left ignored for the last 25 years. Abandoned during the construction of a local yacht club since the 1980's, a barge stuck in the mud poses potential environmental and navigational hazards. Yet, no one knows who left it, and no one has been able to remove it. NOAA and the Alice Ferguson Foundation have banded together to sort the problem out. This first installment traces the mounting effort through the silent perspective of the The Barge That Wouldn't Budge.

Nearly a century of aggressive fire suppression has left our National Forests overcrowded and disease infested, leading to historically high amounts of dead and live fuels accumulation. This paired with a recent trend of hotter and drier summers sets the stage for a surge in conflagrations so immense that more and more fire suppression efforts are proving futile. Not only does this epidemic threaten our wild legacy, but it also puts thousands of firefighters, homeowners, and those who recreate at risk. TERRA 459: The Flying Dustbin PART FOUR

2008-12-19 :: www.lifeonterra.com
Length: 10m 19s

The Flying Dustbin is the success story of the Fulmar, a seabird which numbers 500,000 pairs in the UK but was virtually unknown as a breeding species at the turn of the last century. The film documents the reasons for its success, but is also a warning. The Fulmar faces some very serious modern problems, 9 out of 10 Fulmars in the North Sea have plastic in their stomachs whilst global warming is diminishing its natural prey stocks, leading to breeding failures. The film was shot at various locations around Scotland including Aberdeenshire, the Orkney Islands, St Kilda as well as in the Netherlands. TERRA 452: Cascading Effects PART TWO

2008-10-30 :: Jim Tharp

Examining the sublime landscapes of North Cascade, Mount Rainier, and Olympic National Parks, researchers shed light on emerging indications that climate change is real and predict how warming temperatures will affect the natural resources and timeless beauty of the region. As glaciers melt and the winter snow-pack decreases, what is the fate of the aquatic ecosystems and cold water fish that depend on runoff during the hottest and driest parts of the year? How will enormous amounts of unstable sediment exposed by retreating ice-sheets on Mount Rainier affect the roads and infrastructure of that park and beyond? Will pine beetle infestations and larger forest fires become widespread in the approaching future? [www.lifeonterra.com ] SPECIAL FEATURES / DETAILED EPISODE INFORMATION / TERRAPHILES COMMUNITY …

2008-09-25 :: Ed Watkins

Sometimes, unexpected guests can very quickly become pests. But what happens when you ask them to leave? Join the Red Queen and Alice on live action, animated journey down the rabbit hole, as they are caught in an evolutionary arms war between parasite and host. Science films often portray their content in a very pedestrian way. This one set out to challenge this approach by presenting a theory about parasite/host co-evolution (by Matt Ridley) in a visually extraordinary manner, using Lewis Carroll's imagery. This short is aimed at a general, educated audience, and was produced as part of an ongoing MFA in Science & Natural History Filmmaking at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana [www.lifeonterra.com ] SPECIAL FEATURES / DETAILED EPISODE INFORMATION / TERRAPHILES COMMUNITY …

Do you ever wonder where the juice to charge your iPod was produced? Like over half the electricity in the United States, it probably came from a coal-fired power plant run on coal from the mountains of West Virginia. This reliance on coal raises a score of questions about people, land, and a region's future. In the first of a three-part series of excerpts from "Burning the Future: Coal in America", we meet some of the West Virginians affected by our country's coal policy and see some of the health and ecological costs wrought by it. TERRA 434: Yellowstone's Wildlife Highway PREVIEW

2008-06-26 :: K.C. Breen

Jonesing for spectacular nature photography? You got it! The Madison Valley, just north of Yellowstone, is a richly diverse ecosystem where just about every big-game species in Montana can be found. Grizzly and black bears, wolverines, elk, deer, moose, and pronghorns all use the Valley for seasonal migration, food, and breeding. However, development and the resulting fragmentation of large, interconnected ranges put this habitat at risk for the animals, especially wolverines, which are particularly intolerant of human activity and require vast ranges for their survival. K.C. Breen shows us how human encroachment in the Valley is being mitigated for wildlife's sake in "Yellowstone's Wildlife Highway: Promoting Connectivity in the Madison Valley". TERRA 427: The Bison Haze: A Yellowstone Controversy PART THREE

2008-05-07 :: TERRA, Michael Van Laanen

In the third and final part of "The Bison Haze" we are taken on a trip to the nation's capital to see what legislators are doing about the Bison issue. There are passionate people on both sides of the debate trying to convince people who might have never even seen a bison that they should be hazed or left alone. Is brucellosis a real threat from the bison? Will ranchers really loose out if the Bison are left to roam outside the boundaries of Yellowstone? Is there a bigger issue here about the sanctity of our national parks? Watch episode three to find out! Yellowstone's population of bison are free-ranging, and so can leave the friendly confines of the park at any time. Animal activists believe that the bison, perhaps THE symbol of the plains, should be able to roam free as in centuries past. Ranchers in the area fear that their cattle may be infected by the brucellosis that bison can carry. As a result, a battle rages between the laissez-faire and regulatory camps, with the bison and government caught in the middle. In Part three of "Ranching the New West" Duke Phillips tells us why he believes so strongly that cattle grazing is vital for the grasslands of the American West. There is a way to ranch that fits in with the natural system and replaces the wild systems that were there before. After all, Ranchers want to maintain a profitable industry and as Duke says: "If we're going to stay in business we have to create a nature that is stronger tomorrow than it is today". TERRA 348: BIONEERS Part Three

2007-10-25 :: www.lifeonterra.com

While many of the issues being talked about at the Bioneers conference are serious, there's no need not to have some fun once in a while! That's why we decided to wrap up our 'live' coverage of the conference with a light hearted look at a world wide problem - the environmental impact of plastic bags. So we dressed up one unlucky Terra producer in a year's supply of plastic bags to see what bioneers had to say about the issue - who said we don't suffer for our art! 2007-10-21 :: www.lifeonterra.com

From the very beginning, the soul of Bioneers has been rooted in the spirit of inclusion. All are welcome - those who share a commitment to understanding and defending the natural world especially so. This is the reason you are likely to be sitting next to a biologist, a shaman, and an urban farmer at the same lunch table. By bringing such a diverse group into the forum, Bioneers sparks rich and unusual connections which, in turn, inspire elegant new solutions. This creative energy manifests the ability of diverse human knowledge to transcend cultural and practical differences in pursuit of greater and more meaningful truths. TERRA 338: Oil On Ice PART SIX

2007-08-30 :: TERRA, Bo Boudart, Dale Djerassi

What have we learned from the debate over drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge? Is it just another place where we should take what is there and use it with no thought of the consequences? Does ANWR represent a vital resource to keep our society running the way it has for much of the 20th Century? Hopefully, if nothing else, it makes us think about the other possibilities out there. The finale to "Oil on Ice" shows us there are not only viable alternatives to using oil, but that these alternatives would actually be cheeper and better for all of us. Solar power, hybrid cars, wind power - take your pick, we just need to take that first step into the unknown. We'll have to change our behavior some time soon, so why not do it now and preserve some of the most beautiful areas of the world while we're at it? TERRA 337: Oil On Ice PART FIVE

2007-08-21 :: TERRA, Bo Boudart, Dale Djerassi

Gwich'in natives travel to Washington D.C. to square off with George W. Bush and Alaska's pro-drilling congressional leaders. In the past, the 'impact' of drilling has been perceived to be a local environmental issue - relevant, surely, to the caribou and the Gwich'in but who else? The disastrous implications of climate change have certainly changed that attitude. ANWR is not a local issue anymore; it is a global issue. The burning of fossil fuels affects us all as global citizens not as local ones; therefore, Alaskans, Americans, the people of Tuvalu, all have something at stake. With respect to climate change, Buckminster Fuller said it best: "think globally, act locally." It is now time to recognize alternatives globally and to put those alternatives into practice locally. TERRA 336: Oil On Ice PART FOUR

2007-08-15 :: TERRA, Bo Boudart, Dale Djerassi

When you look at a map of the northern reaches of Alaska, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge represents a tiny proportion of the entire coast line. Ninety percent of this land is already being drilled for oil - indeed, ANWR is the only remaining area where drilling is not permitted. ANWR represents the only area where caribou will still migrate, the people can still live their preferred subsistence way of life and the land still looks like it did fifty years ago. So why would we take this last place for such short-term gain? Why would we risk this area when there are so many viable alternatives? World oil reserves will run out - no question. So why not use and develop one of the many technologies we have as an alternative now, instead of risking more destruction? Get involved - we all have to act now and change our behavior so that there is something left for future generations to be proud of. TERRA 335: Oil On Ice PART THREE

2007-08-08 :: TERRA, Bo Boudart, Dale Djerassi

The Gwich'in tribe of Northern Alaska have been hunting caribou in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve for hundreds of years. They rely on the herd's yearly migration for their survival and their way of life. The caribou migrate into the area to take advantage of the Spring grasses so their new born calves get the nutrition they need to survive the long, Arctic winter. 80% of these calves are born in the exact spot that is proposed for oil drilling - known to us simply by a number - 1002, but know to the Gwich'in as home. If area 1002 is developed for oil, this keystone species will be wiped out, along with the natural systems it supports. Almost 20 years after the Exxon Valdise oil spill in Southern Alaska, the Native American tribes of that area have still not been paid any compensation for the loss of their fisheries, even though they won that right in court - is it any wonder the Gwich'in are terrified of the possibilities of oil drilling in their home? TERRA 334: Oil On Ice PART TWO

2007-08-01 :: TERRA, Bo Boudart, Dale Djerassi

In 1989 Prince William Sound in southern Alaska was hit with one of the worst manmade, environmental disasters of all time. The now infamous Exxon Valdez oil tanker struck a reef on its way out to sea and spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean. The result was an ecological catastrophe of which the true impact is still not fully understood almost 20 years later. What is known is that fish populations have plummeted, marine wildlife has left the area and the subsistence fishermen of the sound have lost their income and their way of life. Can we really afford to let this happen again? Is it worth the risk to the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve just so that our dependence on oil is extended by another decade or two? Ranchers sitting down with conservationists to work out the best way to preserve a valley in Montana - ten years ago you might have said this was impossible. However, today it is not only possible, but a reality. There is no longer a misunderstanding between these two groups, but a respect and newfound admiration. There are many stereotypes when it comes to environmentalists. Most people think of long-haired tree huggers who get around in torn jeans and Birkenstocks. But in the Big Hole Valley in Montana, the "greenies" look quite different. They are most often found on tractors tending to cattle or saddling up their horse in a barn. That's because the main push to conserve this beautiful valley comes from its ranching community. Conservation and ranching have often been thought of as mutually exclusive activities, but the farmers of the Big Hole are proving this wrong.
