empowering all musicians to understand the music business from the ground up.

Recorded at Records on The Wall Studios, Nashville, TN.

In today’s high-tech world, both good and bad news about you can travel faster than you can talk. And it’s not only news; it’s pictures, videos and audio recordings. That means that you need to take extra care to protect your reputation both on and off stage. Creating a buzz for the wrong reason can have a dramatically negative impact on your career. So if you are tired of all of your success and you want to put an end to the growing demand for your shows and music, here are some things that you can do that will have this kind of effect:

Get caught doing something embarrassing in public, especially if you are recorded or filmed. Some examples would include exposing yourself inappropriately or using foul language around kids. Your fans may not like it, and venue owners may fear you’ll alienate their patrons. …

10 Tips For Getting the Gig You Really Want Show #105

2015-04-24
Length: 19s

Every artist has that group of gigs that they have tried and tried to book but to no avail. Here are some of the reasons why you may be losing those gigs to others.

Your price was too high. Be sure you do your homework and know what the venue normally pays Your price was too low. This can brand you as an amateur. Know what you are worth! You’re not the right fit for the venue. Be sure you’re a good match for the venue before you make the call. You don’t have a good live video. Entertainment buyers need to know what you look and sound like before they will hire you. Your website or other marketing materials don’t look professional. No matter how good your act is, you will still be judged by your marketing. You don’t have experience successfully playing that kind of venue. Venues need to know that you can deliver at least as well as the other acts they hire. The venue requires that you draw fans to the show but you don’t have a large enough fan base. Be sure you have a large mailing list and following before you approach this kind of venue. You have a reputation of being hard to work with. Word spreads fast among venue owners and managers. They always do their homework before they hire you. You’re not a good salesperson. Booking gigs requires strong sales skills. You not as strong as the other acts vying for the same gigs. Know your competition. …

7 Possible Reasons Your Career is Not Taking Off Show #103

2015-04-02
Length: 20s

By Vinny Ribas  Indieconnect.com

You might have unbelievable talent. You may be investing a lot of money into recording, gear etc. You can be spending countless hours talking yourself up on social networks. But if you don’t seem to be making any progress in your career. there is still something amiss. Here is a brief checklist ofsome reasons you may be hitting a roadblock.

You’re in it for the wrong reason. It is vital that you love the music first. Any other priority will get in the way of you’re relationships with your fans. You don’t have a plan. You must know where you’re headed and then map out a step-by-step plan on how you are going to get there. Without it you’re just throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. You’re unwilling to do the things that successful artists do. This ranges from spending hours every day or week marketing yourself to making calls for gigs. It includes taking lessons and hiring coaches. Until ou have a team, you have to be willing to do it all. You believe that your talent is enough. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are millions of extremely talented singers, songwriters and musicians out there. The ones who make it are the ones who put the effort in to make themselves impossible to ignore. You’re not willing to pay your dues. This includes everything from marketing yourself to playing small, mostly empty venues for experience. Successful musicians become that way because they know that it is a process and that they need to earn the respect of the industry before they will be taken seriously. You’re doing it all alone. You’re the band leader, the producer, the engineer, the songwriter, the manager, the booking agent and even your own unofficial lawyer. Music is a team sport. It takes a wide variety of skills, a vast amount of knowledge and a long list of connections to cover all of the bases properly. You are afraid to take the necessary risks. This includes everything from investing in yourself to quitting your day job and going ‘all in’ if necessary. It includes being vulnerable enough to put your real self and your music on stage for all of the world to see and possibly critique. It includes going for the gigs that require you to stretch and improve rather than staying in your comfort zone. Successful artists take risks every day because they know that if there is no risk, there is little or no reward.  Become a Featured Listener …

5 Lessons Most Musicians have to Learn the Hard Way Show#102

5 Lessons Most Musicians Have To Learn The Hard Way By Vinny Ribas   indieconnect.com

Being a big fish in a small pond doesn’t make you king of the sea. Big cities like Nashville, LA and NY are overflowing with singers, songwriters and musicians who move there thinking they will take the town by storm. They get this because they were one of the best in their small town, but now they are one of thousands of guppies in a town full of big fish! It will always take more time and more money than you planned. This rule applies to every business start-up, and being a musician is no exception. Being a musician is both expensive and time consuming. The goal is to make or attract enough money to lighten the load. Without a plan, there is no career.  Every serious artists needs to know exactly where they are headed, and then map out the exact steps they must take to get there in the most timely and effective manner. You can’t do it alone. It takes an army to make one musicians successful. This includes a business team, instrument and/or vocal instructors, industry mentors, engaged fans, venue managers and many more. Build relationships so you can mobilize any part of your army when it’s their turn for action. Not knowing the ins and outs of the business leads to costly and sometime crippling mistakes. Musicians who don’t study the industry often wind up signing bad contracts, trusting the wrong people, unnecessarily signing away their intellectual property or royalties, not collecting from all of the revenue streams they have money coming from, being charged far too much for the products and services they purchase and a whole lot more.

Vinny Ribas is the CEO of Indie Connect, a global business club for up-and-coming artists, songwriters, musicians and music professionals. Indie Connect is also the host of the IC Virtual Music Conference – the world’s only international music conferences to be held exclusively online in a virtual environment. He is also the author of the acclaimed video series, ‘Help! My Kid’s A Musician!’, which helps parents understand their child’s development as a musician, their role as a parent and ’manager’ as well as how the music industry works. During his 40+ year music career, Vinny has been a full time musician, artist manager, booking agent, songwriter and the Entertainment Director for the NV State Fair. He is the co-founder of Leaderbridge, a published author, a strategic business consultant and a popular speaker at both business and music industry conferences.
