Stand By Me (1986)

2015-06-09
Length: 1s

In our second #RobReiner retrospective episode, following on from #Flipped, we discuss the #1986 #RobReiner classic, #StandByMe. This was based on a short story from #StephenKing, starring #RiverPheonix, #CoreyFeldman, #WilWheaton, #JerryO'connell, and co-starring #KeiferSutherland, #JohnCusack, #CaseySiemaszko, and #RichardDreyfuss.    Throughout this episode we examine the music of #BEKing, the actors, behind the scenes stories, and the transgenerational appeal of this film. We also discuss why this may be Rob Reiner's masterpiece, the legacy of River Pheonix, the cult of Wil Wheaton, the underrated, but surprisngly great career of Jerry O'Connell, and the tragedy of Corey Feldman never getting a chance to demonstrate his acting prowess beyond this film.    There are also brief notes on the score, the #extradiagetic sound, some discussion on Keifer Sutherland, and #MarkTwain's #HuckleberryFinn and #TomSawyer who are quite close to River Pheonix and Wil Wheaton's characters, Gordie and Chris.   We also have a contest running.        …

Length: 51s

It feels like #RobReiner is in the air at the Soylent GreenScreen Headquarters, with Michelle picking the movies, she decided to start things off with #Flipped (2010), featuring the young talents of #MadeleineCarroll and #CallanMcAuliffe, who are supported by seasoned actors #AidenQuinn (#PracticalMagic, #TheMission), #RebeccaDemornay (#RiskyBusiness, #Backdraft), #JohnMahoney (#Frasier), #KevinWeissman (#Alias, #Clerks2) #PenelopeAnnMiller (#KindergardenCop, #CarlitosWay) and #AnthonyEdwards (#TopGun, #RevengeOfTheNerds, and #ER).  When Bryce moves in next door to Julie, Julie has an instant crush on Bryce… or course Bryce didn’t feel this way.Bryce comes from a #hardworking, #whitecollar all American family, whereas Julie was free spirit also from a hardworking #bluecollar family. Both have different backgrounds, and different classes, but no matter how much Julie tried, she couldn’t get Bryce’s attention…. Or does she? Bryce comes from a #hardworking, #whitecollar all American family, whereas Julie was free spirit also from a hardworking #bluecollar family. Both have different backgrounds, and different classes, but no matter how much Julie tried, she couldn’t get Bryce’s attention…. Or does she? Some of the team were indifferent to the film, as it is a #KidsMovie, but despite this, the movie showed gender roles had flipped, the time period was flipped, and the class of families also flipped. Sit back and put those ear plugs in and enjoy Flipped.      …

Accepted (2006)

2015-06-03
Length: 1s

In this episode, presented by AllThingsFilm.net we finally #Accepted that #justinLong is here to stay. This was a film from 2006 that slipped under the radar but became a little known cult favourite. This was directed by #StevePink (same fellow who brought us #HotTubTimeMachine) and co-stars #JonahHill, #BlakeLively (#GossipGirl), #MariaThayer (#TammyLittlenut from #StrangersWithCandy), as well as #LewisBlack #TheDailyShow), and one of our favourite up and comers #RobinLordTaylor (#ThePenguin from #Gotham). This is the story of a kid who was rejected from his choice of universities and decided to start up his own college. While this sounds silly on the surface, we examine the real life learning institutes that started similar programs, the achievements of Justin Long, we play a brief game of six degrees of Justin Long, we even briefly discuss the #Bollywood Remake. That's right, this little film that could inspired Bollywood and real life educational institutions.  There is quite a lot more to this film than it has been given credit for. We hope you enjoy it, and we'd love to hear from you @sgspod, you can also find us on Facebook with a brief search.   …

In this episode  we discuss the 1984 classic comedy #PoliceAcademy, starring #SteveGuttenberg, #BubbaSmith, #GeorgeGaynes and #MichaelWinslow. We examine the stereotypes, the characters, the legacy, and whether or not the Police Academy film series ended because they could not make the movies any shorter. Our response to the film was divisive. Wayne thought it was great and that it stood the test of time and considers it the #CitizenKane of comedic cop movies. The Justin's found it amusing but not substantially great. Michelle face-palmed herself at the stupidity of the Police Academy franchise and cannot believe they were able to make as many films as they did.    …

All Things Film presents our 50th recording, and first anniversary. For this monumentous occasion we bring Michelle's dad, Bryan back for a bumper episode, to discuss #StarWars: #EpisodeIV #ANewHope, starring #MarkHamill, #HarrisonFord, #CarrieFisher, #AnthonyDaniels, #PeterMayhew and #JamesEarlJones. Our primary focus was to look at the impact this film had on the #1970s. Through this discussion we look at the initial reception of Star Wars, the changes made to the film over the last 38 years and how it felt to see Star Wars for the very first time back in #1977. We also get behind the scenes and look at the origins of the film, what #GeorgeLucas expected of the film, the deals he had to make and his bet with #StevenSpielberg.  The audio embedded is from the original teaser trailer released in 1976. We used this instead of the traditional #JohnWilliams score to reflect on what it would have been like to have seen Star Wars in its original run.   …

Don Bluth's Titan A.E.

2015-04-07
Length: 57s

In this episode we discuss the final #DonBluth film, #TitanAE, cowritten by #JossWhedon, and starring the vocal talents of #MattDamon, #DrewBarrymore, #BillPullman, #NathanLane, and one of our favourites #JohnLeguizamo.     This is a hard to find film that is out of print in Australia, but has become a cult favourite amongst #Firefly and #Serenity fans for its connections to #JossWhedon and also to animation fans for transcending Cell to CGI animation and utilising #2D and #3Danimation from Industrial Light and Magic. While we had mixed responses to the film, as two of our podcasters loved it, and two were indifferent, but the level of work did not go under appreciated.  The topics we cover include the changeover from 2D to 3D, the end of Don Bluth's career, the rise of Joss Whedon, how much credit does Joss Whedon really deserve, and last but not least, we examine the merits of the film; from story to structure, to voicework, and whether or not the film condones genocide.  As usual, you can find us on iTunes, Stitcher, TuneInRadio, and we are now part of the #AllThingsFilm Podcast feed, available from www.allthinsgfilm.co.uk and from Itunes. Australia Day Special: Young Einstein/The Dish/Romper Stomper/Not Quite Hollywood

2015-01-26
Length: 24s

In this episode, that we recorded right after our first recording of 2015 (Will Be Up shortly), we discuss our favourite Australian Films and why they are of cultural significance.   Wayne's preferred Australian film was #YahooSerious' #YoungEinstein, the SGS team thought he was nuts for claiming there was educational value in the film but Wayne argued that it serves as a good and memorable introduction to the greatest minds of the early 20th century, but his favourite scene was the kitten pie.   Regular Justin's choice Australian film was #RomperStomper as this film shows a darker side to #Australian culture and introduced the world to #RussellCrowe. Darkest-Timeline Justin, suggests that one of the most important films is #NotQuiteHollywood as the film is both entertaining and informative, while providing a concise introduction to a forgotten era of Australian film making. Michelle's go to Australian Film was #TheDish, starring #SamNeill, written and directed by #RobSitch and co written by #SantoCilauro, #JaneKennedy and #TomGleisner. This was the most contemporary of our choices, and while we referenced #TheCastle, The Dish was her preferred film due to the historiography of the story as Sitch and co tell a story of Australia's involvement of the #Apollo11 #MoonLanding which was not as well known as it should have been. We, at the Soylent GreenScreen Podcast hope you had a great #AustraliaDay, and we'd love to know what some of your favourite Australian films are.    …

This is a much loved film within certain circles, and some of our podcasters love this film, yet, not everyone of the SGS team was a fan. Through this discussion we hypothesise whether or not Louis was a hero or creepy #psychopathic villain who was pushed too far, and whether the #LambdaLambda fraternity were really that bad.   We also examine some of the more comntroversial elements of Revenge of The Nerds and whether these #nerds are as inspiring as they have been given credit for. The Karate Kid: 30th Anniversary

2014-12-01
Length: 57s

In this episode Wayne challenges Michelle and The Justin’s opinions on the #1984 classic, #TheKarateKid, directed by #JohnGAvildsen (who also made #Rocky), and starring #RalphMacchio, #PatMorita, #ElizabethShue, #MartinKove and #BillyZabka. Wayne thinks this may be the greatest sports film of all time, Darkest-timeline Justin and Michelle on the other hand were not as taken and thought it was too long, Regular Justin was also indifferent, but thought it was too short.  Through this discussion we discuss the character motivations, the #BarneyStinson argument, whether or not #MrMiyagi was good at his job, how a janitor can afford so many cars, understanding #JohnnyLawrence's Point of View, why #DanielLarusso is a great teen role model, and why Wayne thinks The Karate Kid is not a martial arts film. By the end of the episode Wayne gets his mind Blown by Darkest-Timeline Justin’s #FightClub theory, which surprisingly, holds together. You can subscribe and rate us on iTunes  …

Sasquatch: Strange Wilderness/Saquatch Dumpling Gang

2014-11-26
Length: 1s

In this episode The SGS team goes searching for #Sasquatch, but all we get is more #JustinLong. In the first half we discuss the #HappyMadison produced, #StrangeWilderness, starring #SteveZahn (#Treme, #DiaryOfAWimpyKid), #JonahHill (#21JumpStreet, #Accepted, #MoneyBall) #KevinHeffernan (#SuperTroopers, #Beerfest, #ClubDread), #JeffGarlin (#TheGoldbergs, #CurbYourEnthusiasm) and #RobertPatrick (#Terminator2, #XFiles). Through our discussion we try to figure out if #AdamSandler produces these movies as a tax dodge, the brilliance of #SteveZahn and #JustinLong and the ways that they pulled together a pretty fantastic comedic cast for a film that was loathed by critics and audiences upon release, but is gradually developing a cult following for the way they parody TV wildlife personalities such as #BearGrills (#ManVsWild) and #SteveIrwin (#TheCrocodileHunter), and America's obsession with #Bigfoot. In the second half we discuss the very low budget Indie, kids comedy The #SasquatchDumplingGang (AKA #TheSasquatchGang). This was another Justin Long film that costarred #JeremySumpter (#PeterPan, #Frailty, #FridayNightLights), #JoeyKern (#SuperTroopers, #CabinFever), #JonGries (#MonsterSquad, #Lost, #NapoleonDynamite), #CarlWeathers (#Rocky, #Predator, #ActionJackson), #StephenTobolowsky (#Sneakers, #GroundhogDay), and #JonHeder (#NapoleonDynamite, #BladesofGlory). We discussed the history of The #DumplingGang films that inspired this film, the inspiration of #NapoleonDynamite. Melbourne Cinema History Part2: Around The World in 80 Days

2014-09-17
Length: 42s

In the scond part of our epic podcasting night with Michelle's dad we discuss the 1956 version of Jules Verne's Around The World in 80 Days, starring David Niven, Shirley McClaine, Cantinflas and a swag of celebrity cameos ranging from Caesar Romero to Buster Keaton.  Through this discussion Bryan (Michelle's dad) explains the importance of this film and why it ran for three and a half years. He also introduces us to the Todd AO processor and how they used the hot airballoon as a way of marketing Todd AO. Todd AO was the foundation of high fidelity surround and the widescreen 70mm format as we know it today. Before this time they had to use three cameras and three projectors to present cinerama. With Todd AO they were able to record a widescreen image on a single strip of film with six channel surround sound. So this was a ground breaking cinematic achievement. Bryan also points out the number of celebrity cameos in this film and brings us a deeper and more complex understanding of the era that Around The World in 80 Days was made.  More on Todd AO  …

Melbourne Cinema History Part 1: South Pacific

2014-09-15
Length: 37s

In this episode the Soylent GreenScreen is joined by Michelle's dad, Bryan. Bryan was generous enough to be our special guest and share his memories of being raised by the manager of the Esquire theatre, Gil Whelan (1924 - 2014). Gil managed some of Melbourne's finest cinemas from the 1950s through to the 70s. Gil was there for a time that History seems to forgotten now that cinema has been subsumed by the multiplex.  This conversation with Bryan stretched out to over 2 hours so we broke it into three parts. The first part is focused on South Pacific (1958), whilst we all agreed that this wasn't the best of the films in cinema history, it ran for three years at The Esquire on Bourke Street. Thus cementing its place in cinema history. Subscribe to us on iTunes   More info on The Esquire can be found on the Technicolor Yawn Blog…

Length: 1s

In our 17th episode from The Soylent Greenscreen Podcast, Darkest-Timeline Justin, Michelle, Regular Justin and Wayne discuss three films about fantasy women and unfulfilled men trying to establish their identities. While these films tell the same story of the inanimate object developing a life beyond the control of the owner/creator they all present unique worlds, differing genres and three men at different stages of their emotional development.  The first film is the 2007 contemporary comedy-drama Lars and The Real Girl starring Ryan Gosling as Lars and Emily Mortimer as Karin. This was one of the few films that we all gave a similar rating.  Our second film was the 2013 Spike Jonz science-fiction-romantic-drama Her starring Joaquin Pheonix as Theodore and Scarlett Johanssenn as the voice of Samantha.  Our last film and perhaps the most controversial was the 2012 fantasy drama with darker undertones, Ruby Sparks. The Amazing Spider-man Sequel (A.K.A. ASS)

2014-04-20
Length: 12s

One of our earliest episodes, where Darkest Timeline Justin and Wayne review The #AmazingSpider-man 2: #RiseofElectro and discuss what could very well be the worst hollywood tentpole film in a very long time.  Darkest Timeline Justin says, #AmazingSpider-man Sequel (#ASS) Is a real stamina test. "At 2 and a half hours it felt like my eyes were going to drop out." On the upside #Spiderman's costume is much improved and the scenes of him flying through the streets are the best they've ever been. That said, the movie itself is a disjointed mess mostly interested in setting up future installments and spin offs rather than telling an actual story. #PeterParker (#AndrewGarfield) as a hero is still a character that is hard to connect with. The love story between him and #GwenStacey (#EmmaStone) is tiresome and after a while you just sort of try to tune it out or use it to relax your eyes. Character behaviour is driven by what the story needs rather than by their own personality and needs. The fight scenes are stunning but it does suffer from it being CGI smackdown between two characters. So what is the story about? Well nothing really there isnt one, it's just a garbled mess. 3/10 Wayne on the other hand thought ASS was so bad that he gave it a deficit score of -2/10. Because 0 wasn't low enough.
