Spurscast #299b: NBA Draft Preview

2013-06-25 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

While we're waiting for the big guys to record their epic Spurscast #300, we squeezed in a preview of the upcoming draft.

Dale Blasingame (@normalguyguide) and Trevor Zickgraf (@yowhatupt) do an annual Twitter Mock Draft where they draft for every team in the first round and explain their picks. It's a great read for anyone preparing for the actual draft on Thursday night.

I had these two join me to talk about lottery picks, mid-round sleepers and who the San Antonio Spurs might end up with at pick #28.

On this week's episode of the Spurscast, Trevor Zickgraf (@yowhatupt) and I are joined by Project Spurs' newest member, Jesse Blanchard (@BlanchardJRB).

We talk about the San Antonio Spurs potentially seeing their Texas rival Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs. With the way the Mavs have been playing, is that a matchup Spurs fans should hope they avoid?

After the recent last-second loss to the Houston Rockets, who should the Spurs turn to for that last shot? Was the play designed for Tim Duncan the right call?

We also discuss how the Spurs matchup with the Heat, what they need to do to get in top shape before the postseason and much more.

And with the regular season winding down, we take a look at some big upcoming matchups for the Spurs. We also make our predictions on the odds that the Miami Heat's epic win streak comes to an end when they visit San Antonio at the end of March.

This week on the Spurscast, Trevor Zickgraf and Quixem Ramirez join me to celebrate the San Antonio Spurs' win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, but does that mean San Antonio has the edge in the postseason?

We also talk about the puzzling losses to the Portland Trail Blazers and the Minnesota Timberwolves. At what point is it time to worry about these fluke losses?

Also, the playoffs are getting closer and closer, how is the Western Conference playoff bracket shaping up, and who could the Spurs see in the first round?

2013-03-07 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

This week's episode of the podcast focuses on the San Antonio Spurs' incredible passing performance against the Detroit Pistons on Sunday and whether or not they actually need a true point guard.

My fellow Project Spurs writer, Jose Grijalva (@JRG1023) joins me to break down the system that has the team still winning without their All-Star PG.

We also discuss the upcoming schedule for the Spurs that they will be facing without Tony Parker. How many wins can the team pull out and will it cost them their top overall seed?

Spurscast #285: Parker's rank among NBA point guards and who the Spurs should fear in the West

2013-02-28 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

This week's episode of the Spurscast is my first attempt as host. Hopefully I'll be cranking these out on a weekly basis, so look forward to many more to come.

My fellow Project Spurs writer, Trevor Zickgraf, joins me this week and first up on our agenda we discuss Tony Parker's rank among NBA point guards. As a big Chris Paul fan, Trevor is reluctant to put TP as number 1, and I have my doubts as well.

We also discuss the Spurs' loss against the Golden State Warriors and try to determine if this is a team the San Antonio Spurs need to fear in the postseason. That leads into a debate about the other Western Conference teams the that could give the Spurs trouble in the playoffs.

Trevor also gives us the background on his odd Twitter handle (@yowhatupT), I talk about what made me renounce my Phoenix Suns' fandom and much more.

Spurscast #284: Duncan injury, bold Baynes predictions and #letbonnershoot

2013-02-06 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

We're back...finally with a new episode of the Spurscast. With Jeff Garcia out for this show due to what we can only guess is vest shopping, staff writers Jose Grijalva and Kyle Boenitz joined me to talk about the latest with the San Antonio Spurs.

Up first, we talked about the injury to Tim Duncan and how the San Antonio Spurs will stay afloat without him. We all agree that Tony Parker will be key to the Spurs winning big games during the rodeo road trip as long as Duncan is out. Jose and Kyle have some major expectations for Aron Baynes now that he is back from his sting with the Austin Toros.

While we are mixed on Duncan being healthy enough for the all-star game, we agree that we are all lucky Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is coaching the West All-Stars and will be monitoring his minutes should he return prior to the break.

We also all hope the #letbonnershoot campaign works in the Spurs forward's favor and he gets a chance to compete in the three-point shootout, especially since the game is in Houston, however we aren't sure whether Bonner's shooting style and release time are exactly cut out for the fast-paced contest. Look for our next podcast during All-Star weekend as we'll be covering the event in Houston.

Spurscast #283: Spurs gone wild

2012-12-05 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

Jeff and I are back with another episode of the Spurscast. In this episode we talk about the latest hot topic after rest-gate, which involves a photo with Tony Parker and Tim Duncan posing with someone dressed up as Joey Crawford at a Halloween Party. While it's making news, Jeff and I both agree that it wouldn't be as big in bigger markets and that the Spurs' choir boy image could be the reason this has become so widespread.

We also talked about Tiago Splitter's improvement and some big games he's had while Kawhi Leonard and Stephen Jackson have been sidelined with injury, and the chances James Anderson could stick around after an impressive performance recently. Jeff and I would not mind seeing the San Antonio Spurs pick up his rights and sending him down to Austin when Leonard and Jackson come back.

Jeff and I are back with a new episode of the Spurscast to give you our early thoughts on the team after media day, training camp and the Spurs' first preseason game.

We noticed the Spurs still have the memory of their Western Conference loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder fresh on their minds and many Spurs and coach Popovich noted that they would use that as fuel this season.

Aside from that, we talked about DeJuan Blair's very short interview, a slimmed down Tim Duncan and our surprise at seeing Eddy Curry on media day.

We closed the show with some of the latest Spurs news, including the injury to Patty Mills and Spurs draftee Marcus Denmon suffering his own injury before getting a chance to play in the regular season with Chalon.

In this episode of the Spurscast, which pretty much marks six weeks since we last published a show, we reward you for your patience with a 91-minute show that strayed beyond the normal San Antonio Spurs news.

Among the things we talked about:

• My knowledge (or lack of) Star Wars.
• James Anderson invited to Hawks vet camp
• The Spurs latest invites to their own vet camp and a workout.
• Andray Blatche
• Jeff calls me a name dropper
• Arrested Development
• The Walking Dead
• Spurs offseason analysis by John Karalis from Red's Army
• John's thoughts on the Easten conference offseason changes
• Our views on Ray Allen and my hopes for the first Celtics-Heat matchup
• Doc and Pop coaching Team USA.
• John and I have the same sneakers

I guess we can call it the Spurscast Variety Show this time, but it was a lot of fun for us to record and we hope you enjoy the madness that is Spurscast episode 280.

Spurscast #279: Spurs latest signing and Summer League talk

2012-07-14 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

Jeff Garcia and Paul Garcia joined me while we are all in San Antonio to record the long-awaited next episode of the Spurscast.

After attending a media session at the Spurs practice facility, we talked about the San Antonio Spurs' recent flurry of signings, bringing back their own free agents in Tim Duncan, Danny Green, Boris Diaw and Patty Mills. We also talked about the official signing of French guard Nando De Colo, which R.C. Buford said would be official yesterday.

Since we got a chance to talk to a few Summer League players and coach Jacque Vaughn, we pointed out some key players to watch for when the Spurs tip off in Vegas tomorrow. Eric Dawson is one player to watch out for. Dawson is a blue-collar workhorse, who would love to make it back to his hometown of San Antonio full-time.

Spurscast #278: Spurs vs. Thunder Game 3 preview

2012-05-31 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

On this episode of the Spurscast, Jeff Garcia and Kyle Boenitz break down the first two games of the Western Conference Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder and talk about how the matchups have played out so far and who the MVP has been.

I joined the guys in the second half of the show to preview Game 3 tonight in Oklahoma City. We all expect the Thunder to go small ball, sit Kendrick Perkins and play smash-mouth basketball to try to get a win tonight in front of their home crowd.

I named Tim Duncan a key player for game three if the Thunder try to play at a slower pace and grind it out. If so, expect some four down calls where Duncan can either go to work down low or get the ball to open shooters.

Audio: ESPN's Ric Bucher talks about lost interview with Spurs' Popovich

2012-05-03 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

Aside from being named the 2011-12 NBA Coach of the Year, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich also has a reputation for being blunt, curt and often sarcastic with media.

From him being snippy with reporters who ask him baseless questions to his live TV interviews where he shows the world just how snarky he can be, Popovich usually brings the laughs whenever he is interviewed.

ESPN's Rich Bucher was recently on XX 1090 am radio with Darren Smith in San Diego and spoke about a lost interview with Pop. In the interview, Bucher spoke about how Pop inserted Boris Diaw into the lineup and Pop responded, "Who cares?" And that led to an interview that was so bad, the interview was shelved.

On this episode of the Spurscast, Jeff Garcia and I got together last night to talk about the Utah Jazz win over the Phoenix Suns, which killed the Suns' playoff hopes and guaranteed the Jazz a spot in the playoffs.

We talked about what had to happen for the Jazz to move up, and barring the Jazz losing their last two games and the Jazz winning their last, the Jazz seem to be the odd-on favorite to be opening the first round against the San Antonio Spurs.

While we will have a full playoff preview podcast and several posts breaking down the Spurs' first round opponent starting soon here at Project Spurs, we gave out a quick primer on the Jazz and their big men.

Spurscast #273: Spurs vs. Lakers preview & more

2012-04-11 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

Jeff and I went live last night to talk about tonight's San Antonio Spurs' home game against the Los Angeles Lakers. We also discussed Spurs coach Gregg Popovich's decision to sit the big three during Monday's road game against the Jazz and how that could possibly come back to haunt the Spurs in the playoffs.

We also took live calls to get your thoughts on the topics and finished the show with our predictions for tonight's game.

We break down the Spurs-Lakers matchups, what edge do the Spurs have over the Lakers, is this really a test for San Antonio and much more on this episode of the Spurscast.

Spurscast #272: Analyzing the Stephen Jackson trade

2012-03-16 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

Just hours after we heard that Stephen Jackson was headed back to San Antonio in a trade for Richard Jefferson, Jeff Garcia, Trevor Zickgraf and I went live to analyze the trade and what it means for the Spurs.

All three of us agree that the trade strengthens the San Antonio Spurs for a late playoff push, but we also still see some areas for concern that could've also been addressed on trade deadline day.

We took your calls and got your thoughts on Jackson returning and answered questions in our chat room before giving out final thoughts and calling it a show. If you missed the live broadcast, be sure to listen to the entire information-packed show below.

Spurscast # 271: TP for MVP?

2012-03-01 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

On this episode of the Spurscast, Trevor Zickgraf joins Jeff Garcia and I to talk about the latest San Antonio Spurs news.

We went into detail on James Anderson's agent urging to Spurs to trade him, the best the Spurs could do in a trade for Anderson and whether or not he should stay.

On the second half of the show, Trevor, Jeff and I discuss whether Spurs all-star guard Tony Parker should get some consideration for MVP. Once you hear our takes on the topics, make sure to leave your opinions in the comments below.

Spurscast #270: The "Big" issue

2012-02-06 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

On this episode of the Spurscast, Jeff and I talk about the latest San Antonio Spurs news, with a focus on the Spurs losing out on both Kenyon Martin and Chris Kaman.

The Spurs could use another big body in the post, and with Martin heading to the Clippers and the Hornets changing their mind about Kaman, the Spurs have limited free agent options, but could still try to make a move before the trade deadline.

Once you hear our thoughts on the topic, be sure to sound off in the comments section with your thoughts.

Spurscast #269: The Second Unit

2012-01-30 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

On this episode of the Spurscast, Project Spurs staff writer Trevor Zickgraf joins us to talk about last night's overtime loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Aside from breaking down the game, we all had issue with Matt Bonner receiving the inbounds pass on the possession that could've lead to a San Antonio Spurs win.

After giving the game a thorough review, we talked about the Spurs' second unit, mostly consisting of Danny Green, Gary Neal and Tiago Splitter with a few other pieces moving in and out. Last night's second unit, which also included James Anderson and Bonner, was the reason for the Spurs' comeback and also the group Spurs coach Gregg Popovich elected to keep on the floor throughout the overtime period.

After taking a quick look at some of the above-mentioned players, we finished the show out talking about two bigs that could possibly come to the Spurs and help them where they need it the most. As we reported last week, the Spurs are pursuing Kenyon Martin and are interested in Chris Kaman, who the Hornets are looking to move.

Once you hear our opinions on this episode, be sure to leave yours in the comments below.

Spurscast #268: Stepping Up

2012-01-17 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

Jeff and I are back for another episode of the Spurscast. On this show, we talked about how several San Antonio Spurs have stepped up and kept the Spurs afloat without Manu Ginobili, including Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green.

We ended the show discussing Cory Joseph and how we'd like to see him get more minutes backing up Tony Parker to help his development. Coincidentally, Joseph played heavy minutes during the Suns game that came after this recording.

Let us know what your thoughts are on the show topics in the comments and we'll include them next week.

2012-01-02 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

On this episode of the Spurscast, our first of the 2011-12 season, Jeff and I talked about our thoughts on the San Antonio Spurs' full first week of play, including wins against the Grizzlies and Clippers and loss against the Rockets.

We went in detail on some of the newer players, rate Tiago Splitter's early progress and wonder if we'll see more from Tim Duncan later on in the season, when it counts the most.

Spurscast #266: All about RJ...again

2011-12-15 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

On this episode of the Spurscast, I'm back with Jeff to talk about Richard Jefferson.

No, seriously, we really did.

We discussed the possibility that RJ may be here to stay. After the rumors and reports the San Antonio Spurs would use the amnesty clause on Jefferson, the Spurs have watched as several coveted small forwards have signed with other teams.

If the Spurs do not sign Josh Howard, the most likely scenario is that Jefferson gets to unpack his bags. On the bright side, the Spurs will have someone that already knows the offense and defense.

Listen to our opinions on Jefferson and be sure to chime in with your own in the comments.

2011-12-08 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

On this episode of the Spurscast, I am joined by Project Spurs' Trevor Zickgraf as we breakdown the news heard around the world -- the San Antonio Spurs will be using their amnesty clause and will be letting go of Richard Jefferson.

We discuss the ramifications of the news on the team and what does this mean as far as the Spurs' search for a small forward.

Speaking of small forwards, Trevor and I talk about the Spurs rumor mill including Caron Butler, Josh Howard, Chris Kaman and other players the Spurs have been reported to be looking at.

All this and much more including a proposed Project Spurs trade of one of our writers.

2011-12-05 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

On this episode of the Spurscast, Paul Garcia and I talk about the handful of small forwards the San Antonio Spurs have reportedly have taken an interest. From Caron Butler, Josh Howard to Vince Carter, it seems the Spurs are looking to make a move.

But what does this mean for Richard Jefferson?

In the second half of the show, we discuss who is to blame when it comes to the disappointing two seasons with Jefferson in black and silver? Is it the Spurs' brass or RJ himself?

Spurscast # 263: The case for Cory Joseph

2011-11-29 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

Jeff and I are back together after Paul Garcia stepped in over the Thanksgiving weekend to talk about the end of the lockout.

To start the show, Jeff got my reaction to the news, what I'm looking forward to the most and who won and lost in the negotiations.

After a short break, Jeff and I turned our focus to San Antonio Spurs rookie point guard Cory Joseph. The rookie point guard will have a lot of pressure trying to fill George Hill's shoes as a primary backup at point guard. While I think he could use a little more seasoning and mentoring, Jeff says he thinks Joseph will be able to fill in fine and reminds us of another young rookie point guard who faced doubt early on.

Barring any last minute hiccups, the NBA lockout is over.

The players and owners have tentatively agreed to a new Collective Bargaining Agreement which means the San Antonio Spurs and the rest of the NBA will be hitting the hardwood come Christmas.

On this special episode of the Spurscast, Paul Garcia and myself break down the wonderful news for all Spurs fans and what this means for the Spurs and the NBA.

From the Spurs roster, the Western and Eastern conference teams to the details on the new CBA and its impact, we cover it all on this episode of the Spurscast.

Spurscast #261: News of the day, Mahinmi dominating at life

2011-11-17 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

Don't check your iTunes feed or double check the date, yes we are back with yet another Spurscast, but we're trying something new. In an effort to add more multimedia content to our site, we are trying out 1-2 shorter form versions of the podcast during the week to compliment our much longer regular show.

These shows will typically be less than 10 minutes long, although we went a little longer on this first one. We'll either be bringing you some of the latest San Antonio Spurs news that is usually old and stale by the time the regular show comes around or will have interviews with different guests and any time big news comes around, we'll be sure to do that through these shows as well.

In this first try, we talked about the surprise of Tiago Splitter signing with Valencia and the nice chunk of change he's making from the signing. Jeff and I both think Nando De Colo could benefit from the signing and Valencia may make some noise in Group D of Eurocup.

We also discussed Tony Parker winning an award for his Eurocup play. In his first game against Valencia, he scored 34 points for Asvel and left his defender looking for a doctor to perform ankle replacement surgery.

Aside from some other small news bits, we ended by talking about former Spur Ian Mahinmi and the video of him kissing his biceps.

Episode 262 will likely be up by Monday and that'll be our regular show.

BBC News interviews Project Spurs

2011-11-16 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

I was contacted by the BBC News for an interview on the NBA lockout for their "The World Today" program.

Co-host Mark Whittaker asked me several questions regarding where my sympathies lie in this dispute, how the lockout and potentially the season being cancelled will affect the city of San Antonio.

You can listen to the full interview, which aired on the BBC this morning, by pressing play or downloading the mp3 below. You can also listen via the BBC's iPlayer. The interview is right around the 40 minute mark.

Spurscast #260: Sad but true

2011-11-15 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

On this special episode of the Spurscast, Jeff and I talk about what exactly could come from the players rejecting the last deal and disbanding from the union.

Aside from a very high possibility of the 2011-12 season being cancelled, we talk about the ripple effect, which probably means more San Antonio Spurs players will be heading overseas.

We also talk about losing one of Tim Duncan's final seasons, the Spurs' chances at winning a championship looking even slimmer as another year goes by and what the loss would mean to team staff, gameday staff and local business.

Spurscast #259: Dedicated to the memory of Georganna Metz Rogers

2011-11-14 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

The entire staff here at Project Spurs is a very tight-knit group and when one of our "family members" is hurting, it affects us all. Last week, Jason Rogers lost a very special person in his mother so we are dedicating this episode of the Spurscast and this entire week of posts at Project Spurs to the memory of Georganna Metz Rogers.

On this episode of the Spurscast. Jeff and I are back to bring you the latest San Antonio Spurs news. We start the show off by talking about the offer Tiago Splitter reportedly received from Euroleague powerhouse Unicaja Malaga. We discussed our concerns if Splitter does take the offer with the possibility of injury and missing yet another training camp.

After the break, we talk about our topic of the week. When the lockout is settled, will fans still support and embrace the NBA? Jeff and I both agree that fans would still support the league if it is ended soon, but if an entire season is lost, fans will start looking elsewhere, like college basketball and start watching other sports, which could be detrimental to the league.

We close the show with a few rants and how we hope it all ends.

Audio: Bonner says the players will stay united

2011-11-09 :: michael@projectspurs.com (Michael A. De Leon - ProjectSpurs.com)

San Antonio Spurs forward and the Executive VP of the NBAPA, Matt Bonner, spoke with Canada's TSN 1050 on the latest with the NBA lockout.

Bonner made it clear the players are willing to deal with the owners but the last offer given from the owners, it just simply wasn't acceptable because it still didn't address the player's concerns, that it would create a hard-cap, didn't help the middle-class players and more. He also said it has nothing to do with greed.

Bonner also commented on Michael Jordan and feels MJ is simply looking out for his best interests just like he did when he was a player.

In the end, Bonner says the fight is just about preserving the system the player's have enjoyed for years.

Take a listen to what Matt had to say on the lockout.
