Scott asks the boys for advice on choosing the correct size of boots after being told that he should buy boots that are half size bigger. Sean explains the benefit of slightly larger boots for the winter walker. Jersey based Jack asks for advice which version of the popular Silva Expedition 4 base plate compass he should buy and what are the differences between the NATO and civilian versions.The brothers talk about the different compasses available and why some models are very expensive. Alister from Richmond asks fro advice on which water filtration system he should consider for his planned trip to Scotland this coming summer. Sy talks about his experiences, both good and bad, with water filters and recommends a brand that really stands to the forefront in the eyes of the Sumo Survival boys. Hexi blocks are the subject of listener Kevin’s question. He asks the brother to recommend civilian alternatives to the military issue fuel block which are a old bushcraft favourite. Sean suggests that Kevin look towards the fuels produced by outdoor supplier Highlander and also talks about the Fire Dragon solid fuel blocks from BCB which promise to be more eco-friendly than traditional hexamine. Jack from Tuxford asks if the guys if they can suggest a small axe capable of being stowed easily in a backpack. Sean and Sy back this week in the 45th episode of the Sumo Survival Bushcraft Podcast. The boys answer a mixed bag of outdoor and bushcraft related questions sent in by listeners. Teenager John from Dover asks the boys if it is true that it is illegal to make your own bows or if his next door neighbour has got it wrong. Sy remembers back to when Sumo Dad took the boys out to the woods and showed them how to make bows and how to use them safely. Listener Arron from Alloa asks the brothers for tips on how to get a good nights sleep when camping in the wilds. Sy reveals his liking for fluffy feathers at bed time as he recommends Arron take a pillow with him. Sean talks about the advantages of taking a small hot water bottle with you when camping out in colder weather for which Sy ridicules him but they both agree on ear plugs as being an ideal solution but only in the right surroundings. Paul from Livingston encountered a problem when camping in Perthshire last summer. He set up camp and was promptly asked to move on by the fame who owned the land. Paul asks the guys if this was right given the access laws in Scotland. Navigation is mentioned again this week as listener Davey from Bolton asks if Harvey maps are a alternative to using the wide spread OS maps that everyone is familiar with. Sean explains the differences between the two map types and what advantages Harvey maps have over their OS rival. Listener Steve from St Andrews asks the brothers why it is not possible to practice the majority of bushcraft fishing techniques in the UK. The boys give a number of reasons of why this is and Sean talks about his latest purchase, a CRKT Edgie folding knife. Sean is suffering from a bad cold this week but bravely fights on through his bout of “man-flu” despite Sy’s attempts at putting him off. The brothers talk about the latest trend of bushcraft videos on Youtube and one listener questions why so many of them cover the same subject of firelighting with a fire striker. The brothers talk about the benefits of such videos. Rachel, a listener from Toronto, asks why so many UK bushcrafters go out in groups and why there seems to be few women involved in the UK bushcraft scene. Sumo Sean has bought himself a new bushcraft knife that he hopes will serve him well throughout the coming year. The EKA Nordic W12 has been built for just about anything and with it's 4mm thick modified drop point full tang blade it looks to be ideal for heavy bushcraft use. Unlike other knives that have been reviewed by the boys, this particular knife will reviewed over a period of 12 months. Sean and Sy offer advice to Nick from Swansea about what to look of when selecting a tarp from the many available to bush crafters. Sy favours heavier weight material while Sean opts for the British forces issue bash as his best buy. Amanda from Dumfries asks the lads if she should allow her 14 year old son go camping in the woods with his mates. The brothers share some of their experiences from many years ago and offer up some tips for anxious parents on security and safety for youngsters new to the outdoors. Kettering based Ian asks the boys what they take with them into the field to clean their kit. Sean reveals that he is a bit of a clean freak when out on the hills and he shares his opinion on keeping both yourself and your kit clean while venturing out. Sy makes some suggestions on personal hygiene as well as kit that you could use to make life easier. The week’s show covers everything from fat or thin ferro rods through to hand made knives and surplus kit. The boys talk about teaching kids how to light fires and discuss what age you should start looking at teaching them the skills required and what the potential pitfalls can be. Sy admits to being a young firebug after being taught at far too young an age. Sy shares news of a bargain winter jacket he bought through ebay recently.
