The Secrets Of Flying Squirrel Removal 2011

2011-11-20 :: Robb@wildlifepro.net
Length: 2s

Our last scheduled podcast before the Holiday Season Starts. No better topic then Flying Squirrels . The basic idea is to find the main entryway and put a one-way door over it. Then seal up the rest of the house. For flying squirrels, you want to seal up all holes bigger than your thumbnail and any linear crack wider than your pinky finger. You can use any type of barrier, but the key is to use something that they cannot get through. Remember that bats will not chew to get back in the way a flying squirrel will. I have heard that "flyers" will not chew through barriers or electrical wires. That is false: I have seen them chew to get back in, and I have seen them chew electrical wires just like corn on the cob. However, they chew in such a hyper state that they never sit still long enough to make it through the wire like mice or red and gray squirrels will. Attention to detail is crucial. You can seal up an entire house and leave one small hole in the hardest-to-reach spot and they will find it. During an exclusion, when they first go out of the one-way door and then can't get back in, flying squirrels start to search the entire roof line for another way back in. The lowest point I have found them to re-enter is from six feet above the ground.…

Beekeepers: Screened Bottom Boards & Paraffin Dipping Equipment

2010-04-08 :: Robb@wildlifepro.net
Length: 1s

Screened Bottom Boards & Paraffin Dipping Equipment with our special guests Janet Brisson from Country Rubesâ?? Farms, maker of the popular Combo Screened Bottom Board. Janet Brisson and her husband Mike have been a self-sufficient family and organic farmers for over 30 years. In 1995 they were forced to become hobbyist beekeepers due to lack of pollination as bees were loosing their fight against the insidious Varroa mites. Horrified to discover that even the most organic-minded beekeepers were driven to use some type of chemical to save their bees, the Brissonâ?? researched and started building and using screened bottom boards along with intensive drone brood management to reduce their chemical use. After 10 years and various adaptations of SBBâ??s, they re-discovered using powdered sugar as an effective way of detaching Varroa mites and have been chemical free since the beginning of 2005. One final modification of their screened bottom board to make using powdered sugar easy, the Brissonâ?? developed their product, the Country Rubes Combo Screened Bottom Board, that has become nationally available to beekeepers. Janetâ??s program â??Healthy Bees & Environmentally Friendly Varroa Controlâ?? discusses how to monitor and manage your hives, bees and varroa mites using screened bottom boards, powdered sugar, and drone brood manipulations has been given at Conferences and clubs throughout the United States…

Beekeeping-Making Products From the Hive

2009-12-10 :: Robb@wildlifepro.net
Length: 1s

Making Products from the hive with Monica warner Monica Warner is the co-owner of The Carolina Bee Company. She and her husband, Todd have been keeping bees since May of 2004. They are a small beekeeping operation located in Franklin County, North Carolina (about 20 miles north of Raleigh). This little enterprise was started with just two hives of honey bees. Over these handful of years, the Warnerâ??s slowly expanded the number of hives as well as their experience. Today, The Carolina Bee Company still remains a small company that produces high quality, chemicalfree, raw honey; and offers limited pollination services to the surrounding gardening and farming communities. Now, they have also expanded their small company to include the production of fabulous all natural, slow-cured, hand-crafted and handmade soaps, lip balms, and body butters. All of their products are made from scratch with the very best all-natural ingredients to include, of course, the blessings of The Carolina Bee Company honey bees: honey and beeswax. Their products have been a resounding success. Monica entered the soaps, lip balms and body butters into the 2008 and 2009 NC State Fairs, and won 1st and 2nd place ribbons for them respectively. Feedback on the products has been so positive, that they are expanding the product line further by selling in a couple local (Raleigh area) businesses, in addition to selling them on their website, www.carolinabees.com.…

UNSEEN HAZARDS THAT THREATEN HUNTERS, CAMPERS, AND HIKERS Thursday Night on Our Podcast at 8 PM EST I will be joined by author, Jerry Genesio will be joining me for a discussion on wildlife diseases that threaten campers, hunters, campers,wildlife and animal control professionals. You can join us by dialing in at 1-724-444-7444 call id 16456#, and use 1# as your pin number. The podcast will available for download upon the conclusion of the podcast at http://skinnymoose.com/wildlifepro/our-podcasts/ along with all of our network podcasts. Bridgton, Maine, June 25, 2009 â?? There are UNSEEN HAZARDS in forests and fields that threaten those who enjoy hunting, camping, and hiking. Pathogens commonly found in wildlife can inflict unspeakable suffering and even death. Rabies, Tetanus (Lockjaw), Tularemia (Rabbit Fever), Brusellosis (Undulant Fever), Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Borrelia (Lyme Disease), are six of the most virulent microorganisms lurking in natureâ??s hidden world patiently waiting for an opportunity to infect the unsuspecting and unprepared. But knowledge and simple protective measures can shield even the most vulnerable. Jerry Genesio has written an 86-page book containing vital information about these perilous pathogens. Each is described with symptoms, treatment, history, carriers, geographical risk areas, and significant incidence reports. The book also contains advice provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA, on how to avoid vectors such as ticks, and how to properly remove ticks. In 1993, Rabies was confirmed in 20 deer in the state of New York. Tetanus is commonly found in the intestines of wild animals. About 200 cases of Rabbit Fever are reported in the U.S. annually. There are 100 to 200 human cases of Undulant Fever reported nationally each year with most reports originating in Texas, California, and Illinois. In 2003 and 2004, more than 1,800 cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever were reported each year, but less than 2% of all cases are actually found in the Rocky Mountain states. Of 27,444 cases of Lyme Disease reported in 2007, 87% were confined to 10 states, including Connecticut and Wisconsin. UNSEEN HAZARDS That Threaten Hunters, Campers, and Hikers: What you should know about pathogens commonly found in wildlife, ISBN 978-1448605118, is available for $7.95 plus shipping and handling. It can be ordered online through Amazon.com, Amazonâ??s Kindle Store ($4.95), or at https://www.createspace.com/3387093 . Also see featured books on www.besthike.com and www.rodnrifle.com. Poorman's Guide to NWCO Internet Advertising

2009-06-04 :: Robb@wildlifepro.net
Length: 1s

Note: Use twitterlocal.net not .com as was mentioned in the podcast. No rewards come at a cheap price. But my 15 minute a day marketing plan will work if you are insistent on working it. Kirk Lapierre joined me on a variety of topics. Here is my outline and links: Poorman's Guide to Internet Marketing As I mentioned in the pre-podcast announcement all you need is a mobile phone that sends pictures, twitter account, facebook acoount, your own blog and ideally your own web site. Your blog and web site need to have links to follow you or your business on twitter and facebook.You put them there to farm those interested in your information and from a local approach to farm your future prospects Twitter Basics Twitter is often misunderstood it can be either used to push or pull information and you will find both useful. Both a personal and a company name twitter account are recommended. In your messages be polite- 1. Be polite 2. Make friends 3. Start conversations 4. Ask questions 5. Answer questions Examples of pushing information in our industry, on a personal twitter account, 1. interesting photos you have taken on the job example: 2. Ask a question "have you ever been this close to a snake, raccoon, bat etc.? http://twitpic/abcdef 3. Answer a Question " I have had bats up in my attic for over 2 years, should I be concerned? Your answer can point to a blog page wrote to answer the question or a specific part of your web site that has the information, or point to another authoritative site like cdc.gov (specific page) 4. Start conversations- write about things going on locally. Good example Tom Herrmann in NYC took the day off recently and wrote he helped escort the Portable Vietnam Memorial exhibit coming into his area. Link to articles you enjoyed or found interesting while reading on the net. Use a hyperlink in your message. 5. Make friends by showing interest in posts by other followers this can be done either as a reply or a retweet. The retweet is one great way of showing interest and passing their info along to even your own followers which in most cases are even a different subset of followers. 6. Never spam using your personal account. We all hate spam email and a good way to lose followers is to blatantly burst several messages all at once or only post things of the nature of spamming. The company twitter account is better suited for some of this activity and is more for info to be found by a user in a twitter search. Putting it all together. 1. Time management is very important and I recommend the following tools to keep it at a minimum. a. Use the twitter/facebook browser at tweetdeck.com. It like twitter is a little hard to explain other then imagine a deck of cards all faceup on a table or desk this is how you can quickly scan recent messages from twitter and facebook followers. It allows you to upload pictures using tweetpic in your message, it allows you to seamlesslesy retweet someone else's message and several other useful uses. b. Use http://twitterlocal.net to create a marketing farm in your area for followers. This can be set within so many miles of any city and help to quickly find other users who have posted recently in your own geographical area. Add all of them or those you feel may be in your target demographic as followers. A percentage of them will also add you thus win-win the goal is not to have to read everything they post but to farm your local and start a following. c. You can use http://twtqpon.com and a ready made graphic to upload to your coupon. This can be either used for your company account using keywords for others to find the coupon in a search or in your personal account when responding to a question or even asking one? Example: I did one for Anytime Animal Control in Wisconsin and California 10% Off California & Wisconsin Animal Removals @ http://twtqpon.com/vb5bc2 #twtqpon d. Register your business on the Twitter Yellow Pages http://www.twellow.com/ 2. I mentioned twitter can be used to pull information too. Use twitter search and develop some useful searches and svee them that way you can quickly do these searches and pull any info you may need to add a follower or reweet or create your own content.…

Raccoon Roundworm & Rabies

2009-05-04 :: Robb@wildlifepro.net
Length: 7s

Here is an excerpt from a previous podcast I did called raccoons & Their Associated Diseases with Connecticut Wildlife Control Professional, Allison Lavallee. You can become infected by accidentally ingesting or inhaling infectious raccoon roundworm eggs. The eggs are passed in the raccoons stool and may contaminate surrounding soil or water. Hands can become contaminated through touching these areas, either through play or gardening. Infected raccoons can shed millions of eggs per day, and these eggs survive in the enviroment for months or years. The microscopic egg has a thick outer shell that protects it in the environment and makes it difficult to destroy. The eggs are not visible to the naked eye, so it is not possible to tell exactly what areas are contaminated. Precautions must be taken in all areas where there has been heavy raccoon activity, especially if latrines are seen."…

Dominion Over Wildlife

2009-04-09 :: Robb@wildlifepro.net
Length: 1s

Author and fellow NWCO, Stephen Vantassell will be joining us for an evening discussing his new book he wrote. Dominion Over Wildlife? An Environmental-Theology of Human-Wildlife Relations is available from Wipf and Stock publishers. Book Description For centuries Christians believed that God granted humanity dominion over the animal kingdom, meaning that we had a moral right to kill, manage, and eat animals including wildlife. Recently, however, environmental and animal rights activists have assaulted this traditional perspective. They argue that dominion as expressed in meat eating and hunting has resulted in species extinction and environmental degradation. Christian Animal Rights (CAR) activists suggest that the church must reevaluate its traditional beliefs in light of the fact that God's original creation was free of human on animal violence. God, they argue, did not want man's dominion to be expressed through trapping, killing, and eating of animals. These violent activities only came about after the Fall, as God condescended to our hardness of heart. CAR activists point to Christ's sacrificial work of reconciliation as a model for modern Christian behavior: as Christ sacrificed for us, we should avoid eating meat and hunting as ways we can participate in Christ's non-violent work of reconciling creation to himself. In this book, Stephen Vantassel investigates the biblical, ethical, and scientific arguments employed by the CAR movement concerning human-wildlife relations. In this regard, the book engages in practical theology by addressing several important questions: How should Christians treat our wildlife neighbors? Has the Church been wrong in its understanding of human dominion? Does God want Christians to avoid hunting, trapping, fishing, and adopt a vegetarian lifestyle? This book provides answers to these questions by detailing a theology the author calls, "Shepherdism."…

The Handbook For The Wildlife Management Professional Company

2009-02-26 :: Robb@wildlifepro.net
Length: 43s

On Thursday,Thomas Reilly and Mike Flick and I go together to talk about his new book and covered a lot of material on writing company policy, company training programs, safety in our own industry and OSHA compliance and you will also find many useful forms for your own company in this book. If you mention the podcast you can save $20.00 if you act now and order the book before 15 March 2009. You can find his book at a href="http://allinonepest.com/handbook/"http://allinonepest.com/handbook//a or call Thomas direct at 508-835-6610. bWhy did you right the book in the first place? /b I actually started writing a handbook for my own company and something that another wildlife professional had said to me was stuck in my head, He had said that if there was a generic wildlife company handbook available that he would buy it,,, and since there is a lot to putting together training materials and company policies and since this is basically a specialty industry I felt we needed some employee training material geared just for us. Plus I had spent years writing and putting together safety training programs for the industry which due to certain events, never saw the light of day. I had been especially disappointed about this and I thought that at least some good could come of the work I done over the years,,, and if the people really werenÃ?¢Ã??Ã??t interested, then they just wouldnÃ?¢Ã??Ã??t buy it b How is it different compared to other books in the industry?/b Well the difference is that this is a company handbook and contains a lot of information, I mean a lot. Everything from sales, talking to clients how to understand their perspectives and motivations., How to make money through add on services. There is hands on material for training employeeÃ?¢Ã??Ã??s, like how to do a good inspection, how to deal with certain issues and species, the reasons why certain wildlife are present and how to offer more long term solutions at a greater profit and with a more professional finish There is a great deal of information on regulations, ethics and creating company policy and creating safety policyÃ?¢Ã??Ã??s and there are sample forms available, and about half the book is dedicated to workplace safety.…

Bat Control-105- "Bat Conservation"

2009-02-26 :: Robb@wildlifepro.net
Length: 2s

Bat Control 105 - Bat Conservation Bats are mammals in the order Chi-rop-tera. The forelimbs of all bats are developed as wings, making them the only mammals naturally capable of sustained flight (other mammals, such as flying squirrels, gliding possums and colugos, can only glide for limited distances). The word Chiroptera comes from the Greek words cheir "hand" and pteron "wing," as the structure of the open wing is very similar to an outspread human hand with a membrane (patagium) between the fingers that also stretches between hand and body.Their are other flyimh mammals that glide but bats alone are the ones that truly fly. A measure of the success of bats is their estimated total of about 1,100 species worldwide, accounting for about 20 percent of all mammal species.About 70 percent of bats are insectivores. Most of the rest are frugivores, with a few species being carnivorous. Bats are present throughout most of the world and they need to be protected. We got together tonight as a concerted effort between both both the Nuisance Widlife Control Operator and with those involved daily in the conservation of bats. Many of us didlearn alot about bats and their relationship to all of us in this world and how all of us can work together to preserve a mutually important member of our Animal kingdom . Resolving Bird Problems #4-Bird Diseases & PPE

Length: 1s

Note:Lot of discussion was included on personal protective equipment (PPE)too! Listen to it now. Todays Date: February 22, 2009 For those of us old enough we used to celebrate George Washington's Birthday 277 years ago today. Remember you can find us on the net at www.wildlifepro.net Tonights show is the fourth in a series entitled Resolving Bird Problems 4 and tonights focus is on Bird Diseases.Call in information, 8 PM EST 1-724-444-7444 Call ID 16456 or you can listen in at http://talkshoe.com/tc/16456/ The wildlife control operator should be aware that they can contract certain illnesses from birds. The frequency of disease transmission from birds to humans is low, but the very young, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems should be cautious. Many of these diseases are transmitted by ingestion of food contaminated by fecal matter. Prevention of most of these diseases, therefore, simply involves proper hygiene and sanitation. Wearing a face mask to avoid inhaling bird dust is also recommended. If you have persistent flu-like symptoms when no one else you know is affected, see a doctor and mention that you professionally handle birds, have contact with their feces or fecal dust and do bird control as a living. Such symptoms may be indicative of a disease spread from birds to humans. There are over 60 diseases in birds that are communicable to humans.A few of the more common diseases are: Histoplasmosis is a respiratory disease that may be fatal. It results from a fungus growing in dried bird droppings. Chlamidiosis is a yeast or fungus infection spread by pigeons. The disease affects the skin, the mouth, the respiratory system, the intestines and the urogenital tract, especially the vagina. It is a growing problem for women, causing itching, pain and discharge. Cryptococcosis is caused by yeast found in the intestinal tract of pigeons and starlings. The illness often begins as a pulmonary disease and may later affect the central nervous system. Since attics, cupolas, ledges, schools, offices, warehouses, mills, barns, park buildings, signs, etc. are typical roosting and nesting sites, the fungus is apt to found in these areas. St. Louis Encephalitis, an inflammation of the nervous system, usually causes drowsiness, headache and fever. It may even result in paralysis, coma or death. St. Louis encephalitis occurs in all age groups, but is especially fatal to persons over age 60. The disease is spread by mosquitoes which have fed on infected house sparrow, pigeons and house finches carrying the Group B virus responsible for St. Louis encephalitis. Salmonellosis often occurs as "food poisoning" and can be traced to pigeons, starlings and sparrows. The disease bacteria are found in bird droppings; dust from droppings can be sucked through ventilators and air conditioners, contaminating food and cooking surfaces in restaurants, homes and food processing plants. E.coli. Cattle carry E. coli 0157:H7. When birds peck on cow manure, the E. coli go right through the birds and the bird droppings can land on or in a food or water supply. Besides being direct carriers of disease, nuisance birds are frequently associated with over 50 kinds of ectoparasites, which can work their way throughout structures to infest and bite humans. About two-thirds of these pests may be detrimental to the general health and well-being of humans and domestic animals. The rest are considered nuisance or incidental pests. A few examples of ectoparasites include: Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) may consume up to five times their own weight in blood drawn from hosts which include humans and some domestic animals. In any extreme condition, victims may become weak and anemic. Pigeons, starlings and house sparrows are known to carry bed bugs. Chicken mites (Dermanyssus gallinae) are known carriers of encephalitis and may also cause fowl mite dermatitis and acariasis. While they subsist on blood drawn from a variety of birds, they may also attack humans. They have been found on pigeons, starlings and house sparrows. Yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor), perhaps the most common beetle parasites of people in the United States, live in pigeon nests. It is found in grain or grain products, often winding up in breakfast cereals, and may cause intestinal canthariasis and hymenolespiasis. West Nile Virus while West Nile is technically not transmitted to humans from birds, humans can get infected by the bite of a mosquito who has bitten an infected bird. The obvious lesson is that the fewer birds there are in any given area, the better. This translates into a smaller chance of an infected bird in that area, a smaller chance of a mosquito biting an infected bird and then biting a human.…

Kirk LaPierre on the CWCP Program. "The Certification Program is independent of NWCOA membership. An individual DOES NOT have to be certified to be a member of NWCOA. Nor is an individual required to be a NWCOA member to obtain certification." In the quest to maintain the highest degree of Competence, Integrity, and Service, the National Wildlife Control Operatorâ??s Association has developed a program for professional certification. The program was designed to present a means by which NWCOA could not only recognize individuals for their hard-earned achievements, but to also provide the general public with a confirmation that they are dealing with a true experienced professional. Those who hold the title of Certified Wildlife Control Professional have demonstrated a wealth of both â??hands-onâ?? field experience and an exposure to a variety of industry related training programs. Candidates for certification must be able to establish no less than three years of professional practice, along with a minimum of 100 credit hours of board approved training courses and seminars. Certified operators are expected to maintain their level of professionalism by completing no less than 40 credit hours of continuing education every 5 years for certification renewal.…

The Alan Merrifield Interview

2009-01-08 :: Robb@wildlifepro.net
Length: 12s

I had a chance to interview Mr. Alan Merrifield and who gratefully shared his story with The Wildlife Pro Network. I highly encourage all in the wildlife control industry and anyone who is fighting for the opportunity to operate a business and facing an uphill battle and laws enacted in their own states to listen to what Alan has to say here in my interview. His case and his victory in the courts is a story for all Americans to learn even the little guy has a chance against all odds. Here is a letter I received from Alan Merrifield: Fellow Wildlife Control Operators, It is my distinct honor to inform you that the California Wildlife Controllers Association has won another legal battle in defense of our constitutional right to earn an honest living without having to overcome undue government interference. On January 6th, the Ninth United States Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the State's petition for en banc hearing of our case. Had 14 judges approved the State's request, we would have had to file another brief and make still another oral argument before an 11 judge panel. But that's not going to happen now. Unless the State of California decides to file a Writ of Certiorari asking the United States Supreme Court to intervene, this case is over after a very long six year series of courtroom battles. This legal victory represents the very first time since 1868 that an state occupational licensing law was overturned and found unconstitutional. It is only the second time in the entire history of the United States that the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution has been used to smash a state-sponsored cartel. This was truly a David versus Goliath encounter where David kicked ass again. The case of Merrifield v Lockyer is a landmark case establishing a number of legal precedents. important to entrepreneurs in general and Wildlife Control Operators in particular. I will be organizing my thoughts and will be speaking out on the meaning of this groundbreaking news in the near future. Until then, I encourage WCOs everywhere to become familiar with the legal principals established in this case and then explore the possibilities of using the decision to support unfair laws and regulations in your respective states. The Proper Use of Deer Scents

2008-11-13 :: Robb@wildlifepro.net
Length: 2s

Show Sponsor: Ron Jones of Redneck's Pride Gamecall & Scents (Ron Jones) you can reach Ron by phone at 856-863-4168. Thursday, Nov 13, 2008 Ron Jones, aka "Jonesie" did a podcast on the proper use of scents and even though the conversation was oriented around deer hunting any trapper will quickly realize some of the common trapper sense Ron Jones used in this podcast.br Mike Flick, Robert Evans, Mike Smith, Andy "Nutoy" Williams all took part in the conversation. The conversation also included scents & lures for fox,coyote & raccoon trapping as well. Deer scent usage Typesbr Cover scents These are scents that help hide the human or unwanted odors They do not take away. Most often, they are natural smells pine, cedar, and earth. Also may be of urine blends such as doe, Fox, raccoon. There are other smells that also fall into this form that are food such as grape, apple when used in heavy concentrations Skunk can be both negative and positive in this case. How to use Most often cover scents such as the pine cedar earth are used on clothes or hung on rags off the close also stored with the clothes when not in use. Food types should be used in heavy concentrations on each side and down wind of the stand or hunter. Doe, fox, raccoon urine can be sprayed on boots or drag place on each side and down wind of hunter or stand with exception of doe urine should be just each side. Caution with doe urines in bear cat and wolf country. All of these scents can be misted also Eliminators These are compounds that help in dissolving unwanted odors. They can be Baking soda compounds or bio formulas, charcoal is also an odor control product How to use On clothes or store with clothes Calming agents These scents and compounds cause the deer to stay at an ease state of mind. Doe urine is a prime example. Along with the fox and raccoon urines. How to use Best to place on trail by boots or drag to keep deer calm also misting doe urine helps deer to think all is ok Attractants Odors and compounds that is appealing or inviting to the deer. It can be food, curiosity, territorial, or a non treating unfamiliar. Most of these are going to be short distance calls and hold limited time frames, they are mainly used as a position scent. 10 to 60 seconds for a shot or to stop them to test the wind. Non aggressive, deer smells fall into this form such as doe urine. There are some secret compounds that are power calls use in formulation for deer scents which adds call and stay power. How to use Place on a removal rag or holder 2 to 6 feet off the ground depending on wind force. Place out to each side of stand on the up wind right and left of stand in the place for a standing shot. Never place directly up wind or down wind of hunter or stand. Never leave out when not there. Sex These are matrix or heat smells always from the doe! How to use The best way is to trail then hang. Hang on a j hook trail to the up wind side of the stand or hunter. Also, should be on each side of the stand never down wind or straight up wind of the hunter or stand hang where standing shot can be had. Dominate or rut These are the buck smells and most of the time negative or aggressive. Dominate smells will scare young and sub dominate young bucks. Does not in heat or have been breed will also stay away from these smells. However, can add for some exciting hunts when 2 big boys come in. How to use Make mock scraps or hang as you would an attractant. Never put on your persons in the rut!!! Closing Many scents and odors fall into 2 or 3 categories. Our TC 3 and TC Plus is an example of this it is a attractant, trail cover, cover and all season call scent. Scents work all year but will work better in certain times of the season For scents to work the hunter must have a understand of the scents and what they can really do not what he or she thinks they will do based on habits and behavior of the deer they are after. Pressured deer will be harder to call with scents than non-pressured deer. When using any scent such as food, sex, or curiosity extreme caution should be use when putting on boots and never on clothes unless the hunter wants to add excitement of be eaten or butt kicked by a deer ,Bear, moose cat, wolf or big foot! This is written and used by Ron Jones ACP Rednecks Pride Game Calls / Outdoor scents 856 863 4168 May be used with permission Ron who is a producer of deer scents nationally will tell folks in a podcast the right way to integrate them properly in your hunt.…
